In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Every year, Ramadan arrives and something happens to Muslims worldwide: the first few days feel like trying to run after a year of not moving. The prayers that were sporadic are suddenly supposed to be perfect. The Quran that went unopened is suddenly supposed to be read in full. The nafs that was fed everything it wanted is suddenly supposed to be completely controlled.
No wonder the first week of Ramadan is often the hardest โ and why many people plateau or fade by week two.
The solution is not in Ramadan itself. It is in what you do before.
Why Preparation Is Part of the Sunnah
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not arrive at Ramadan cold. He prepared. Specifically, he fasted extensively in Shaban โ the month before Ramadan:
ููุงูู ููุตููู ู ุดูุนูุจูุงูู ููููููู
"He would fast all of Shaban."
โ (Sahih Bukhari 1970)
And he would make a specific supplication as Rajab and Shaban began:
ุงููููููู ูู ุจูุงุฑููู ููููุง ููู ุฑูุฌูุจู ููุดูุนูุจูุงูู ููุจููููุบูููุง ุฑูู ูุถูุงูู
Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Shaban wa ballighna Ramadan
"O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Shaban, and let us reach Ramadan."
โ (Ahmad 2228)
The dua itself teaches the mindset: Ramadan is something you build toward, not something you crash into.
Why Modern Muslims Arrive at Ramadan Unprepared
The most honest answer is comfort. Between Ramadan seasons, most Muslims return to a baseline that is lower than what Ramadan requires โ less prayer, less Quran, more entertainment, more sleep. When Ramadan arrives, there is a gap between where you are and where the month needs you to be.
The nafs also has something to do with it. "Ramadan will fix me" is a powerful and tempting belief. The month is meant to be transformative โ so maybe the transformation will happen on its own, without the uncomfortable work of preparation. This is not how transformation works. Ramadan amplifies what you bring to it. If you bring an already-running practice, it becomes extraordinary. If you bring nothing, Ramadan lifts you โ but not as far.
Five Things to Build Before Ramadan Starts
1. Establish Consistent Five-Times Prayer
This is the single most important Ramadan preparation. If you are not praying all five prayers on time every day before Ramadan, the month will feel like a religious emergency every day.
Start today. Pray each prayer at its time, without delay. If you are missing prayers or praying them late, build this habit now. Two weeks of consistent five-times prayer before Ramadan begins is worth more than any amount of Ramadan-specific preparation.
2. Begin a Daily Quran Practice
The goal during Ramadan for many Muslims is completing the Quran โ one juz per day for 30 days. If you have not opened the Quran in months, starting with one juz a day in Ramadan is a shock to the system.
Start with 10-15 minutes of Quran daily in the weeks before. Any consistent amount. The point is to activate the habit of returning to the Quran every day so that Ramadan's increased recitation feels like acceleration, not a cold start.
3. Practice Voluntary Fasting
The Prophet fasted in Shaban as preparation. Voluntary fasting โ especially Mondays and Thursdays or the white days (13th, 14th, 15th of the month) โ reconditions your body and nafs for the rigors of Ramadan.
If you fast two days in Shaban, the first day of Ramadan is not a shock. If Ramadan is your first fast of the year, that first day is brutal.
4. Clear Outstanding Wrongs
Ramadan is the month of forgiveness โ but forgiveness between people requires action, not just intention. Before Ramadan:
- Apologize to those you have wronged
- Return rights you owe (money, items, favors)
- Reconcile with family members you are estranged from
Allah's forgiveness in Ramadan flows most freely when the obstructions between you and people are cleared. This is spiritual preparation that no meal plan can substitute.
5. Set Your Ramadan Schedule Now
Before the month begins, decide:
- What time will you wake for suhoor?
- Where will you pray Taraweeh?
- How much Quran will you read daily?
- Which nights will you prioritize for night prayer?
A schedule decided in advance survives the nafs's daily negotiation. A vague intention does not.

The Pre-Ramadan Mindset Shift
There is a psychological shift that needs to happen before Ramadan, and it is more important than any practical preparation. The shift is from: "Ramadan will make me better" to "I will go into Ramadan already trying to be better."
This changes everything. When you arrive at Ramadan already praying on time, already reading Quran, already occasionally fasting โ the month becomes a multiplier, not a starting line.
The ramadan rules article covers what is required during the month. The virtues of ramadan article explains why those 30 days are worth all this preparation.
Signs Your Preparation Is Working
You know your Ramadan preparation is on track when:
- The Fajr alarm no longer feels catastrophic โ it just sounds like prayer time
- You are reading a few pages of Quran daily without it feeling like a burden
- You have had at least one conversation with someone you need to reconcile with
- You are thinking about the month with anticipation rather than anxiety
These are small signs, but they are the right ones.
Common Questions
I have missed previous Ramadans badly โ how do I rebuild momentum? Start with the five daily prayers. Just the prayers, nothing else, for the next two weeks. When those are consistent, add 10 minutes of Quran. Then add a voluntary fast. Build upward. The how to prepare for ramadan article covers a practical step-by-step for this.
What if Ramadan starts in a week and I have not prepared at all? Start today. Pray all five prayers. Read one page of Quran. Make the dua: Allahumma barik lana fi Shaban wa ballighna Ramadan. Then, on day one of Ramadan, you have a one-week preparation behind you rather than none. Some preparation is infinitely better than none.
Is it better to do a lot of preparation or let Ramadan surprise me? Preparation is Sunnah. The Prophet did not let Ramadan surprise him. Arriving intentionally is better than arriving passively.
What about the last 10 nights โ should I specifically prepare for those? Yes. The last 10 nights of ramadan are the most sacred of the year. Plan for them specifically โ take time off work if possible, arrange family logistics, and prepare a list of duas you want to make in the nights that contain Laylatul Qadr.
Ramadan Is Not the Beginning
The believer who walks into Ramadan with one month of preparation has a fundamentally different experience than the one who walks in cold. The transformation that people attribute to Ramadan is often more accurately the result of weeks of building beforehand, with Ramadan as the amplifier.
Start now. Build the prayer. Open the Quran. Fast a day this week. The dua for ramadan is available whenever you are ready to begin asking Allah to bless this season.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start preparing for Ramadan?
The Prophet would increase worship in Rajab and Shaban in preparation for Ramadan. Ideally, begin at least 6-8 weeks before Ramadan starts. If that has passed, start now โ even one week of focused preparation is better than arriving at Ramadan entirely cold.
What are the most important things to prepare before Ramadan?
Spiritually: start praying all five prayers on time, begin some daily Quran reading, and clear any outstanding debts to people (apologies, returning rights). Practically: set your schedule, plan your suhoor and iftar approach, and tell your family and employer what to expect. Physically: gradually adjust your sleep and eating schedule in the weeks before.
Should I fast in Shaban to prepare for Ramadan?
Yes โ fasting in Shaban is a Sunnah of the Prophet. He fasted more in Shaban than any other voluntary month. These fasts serve as physical and spiritual preparation. However, fasting the entire second half of Shaban is discouraged unless you already fast regularly, to avoid arriving at Ramadan exhausted.
How do I prepare for Ramadan if I am spiritually low?
Start with one thing: pray Fajr on time every day for the next two weeks. That single practice will shift your relationship with time, sleep, and intention. From there, add one more thing. Ramadan does not require you to arrive at your peak โ it requires you to arrive willing to climb.
What is the dua for Ramadan preparation?
The Prophet used to make dua: 'Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Shaban wa ballighna Ramadan' โ O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Shaban, and let us reach Ramadan. This dua reflects the mindset of anticipation and gratitude even before the month begins.
