In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You just finished 30 days of fasting. Eid has come and gone. And now the nafs is saying: "You earned this rest. Shawwal fasts can wait."
Here is the problem with that logic: the six days of Shawwal are not a bonus round for overachievers. They are a Sunnah with a reward so large that many scholars describe it as one of the best-kept secrets in Islamic practice.
The Prophet said it, plainly:
ู ููู ุตูุงู ู ุฑูู ูุถูุงูู ุซูู ูู ุฃูุชูุจูุนููู ุณูุชููุง ู ููู ุดููููุงูู ููุงูู ููุตูููุงู ู ุงูุฏููููุฑู
Man sama Ramadana thumma atba'ahu sittan min Shawwala kana ka-siyamid-dahr
"Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as though they fasted the entire year."
โ (Sahih Muslim 1164)
One year of fasting. From six days.
Why the Math Works
The calculation is simple but profound. In Islamic jurisprudence, every good deed is rewarded tenfold:
- 30 days of Ramadan ร 10 = 300 days of reward
- 6 days of Shawwal ร 10 = 60 days of reward
- Total = 360 days โ approximately one full year
This is not a loophole. It is the generosity of Allah applied to the fasting of a believer who stays consistent past Ramadan.
When to Fast the Six Days
Start date: The first day of Shawwal is Eid al-Fitr, and fasting on Eid is forbidden. Begin from the 2nd of Shawwal.
End date: All six fasts must be completed within Shawwal (the 10th Islamic month, approximately 29-30 days long).
Consecutive or spread out? You have options:
- Early and consecutive: Fast the 2nd-7th of Shawwal, getting it done while your Ramadan momentum is strongest
- Spread through the month: Fast on your regular voluntary fasting days (Mondays and Thursdays work well), adding days as needed to reach six
- Combined with other Sunnahs: Fast on the white days (13th, 14th, 15th of Shawwal) and supplement with additional days
There is no single "correct" schedule. What matters is completing six days within the month.
Consecutive vs. Spread Out โ What's Better
Both are valid. But psychologically, there is a strong case for starting early:
The case for early and consecutive: Right after Eid, your fasting habit is still strong. Your body is adapted. Your spiritual momentum is at its peak. Waiting means risking Ramadan's discipline fading โ and with it, the motivation to fast at all.
The case for spread out: If consecutive fasting right after Ramadan feels too intense, spreading it over the month prevents burnout and is equally rewarded. Mondays and Thursdays are the Prophet's voluntary fasting days โ combining Shawwal fasts with this Sunnah is efficient.
What About Missed Ramadan Fasts
This is where scholars differ:
Majority view: Make up your missed Ramadan fasts (qada) first. The hadith says "whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with Shawwal" โ implying a complete Ramadan comes before Shawwal fasts earn the full reward.
Minority view: You can do Shawwal fasts while intending to make up Ramadan later. The reward of Shawwal fasts is still obtained.
Practical recommendation: If you have one or two missed days, try to make them up in the first days of Shawwal before starting Shawwal fasts. If you have many missed days (illness, travel, women's menses), the majority view prioritizes qada first.

How to Make Shawwal Fasts a Real Practice
Decide Before Eid Ends
On Eid night or Eid morning, make a conscious decision: "I will fast six days of Shawwal this year." Make the intention now, while you are still in Ramadan mode. The nafs becomes harder to overcome once post-Eid life returns to normal.
Announce It (to Yourself and Maybe One Other Person)
Tell your spouse, a fasting accountability partner, or log it in your tracking app. You are more likely to follow through on an intention you have stated.
Plan the Days
Actually mark the calendar. If you are fasting Mondays and Thursdays, count which Mondays and Thursdays fall in Shawwal and how many extra days you need. Write them in. A vague plan is not a plan.
Pre-make Your Niyyah the Night Before
The intention for voluntary fasting can be made the night before or even during the day before eating. Make the niyyah each night before sleep: "I intend to fast tomorrow as one of the six days of Shawwal."
Keep the Suhoor Habit Alive
The hardest thing about Shawwal fasts is that without Ramadan's communal structure, suhoor becomes easy to skip. Keep the pre-dawn meal habit โ it is still sunnah, still blessed, and still makes the fast significantly easier.
The Spiritual Logic of Shawwal Fasts
There is wisdom in the placement of these six days. Ramadan reforms you โ 30 days of structured discipline break old habits and build new ones. But the reform fades fast if nothing follows. The first week after Eid is usually when the old routine returns most aggressively.
Shawwal fasts interrupt that slide. They say to the nafs: "Ramadan is not over โ the habit continues." Even six days of fasting in the month after Ramadan signal to the body and soul that the changes were real and lasting, not just a 30-day challenge.
The six fasts of shawwal and white days fasting articles explain how to combine these voluntary fasts into a regular annual cycle of worship.
Common Questions
Can I eat suhoor in the morning and then decide to fast? Yes. For voluntary fasts, the intention can be made the morning of the fast day, as long as you have not yet eaten since dawn. If you wake up and decide "I will fast today as a Shawwal fast," that is valid.
Do children or the elderly get the same reward for partial Shawwal fasting? The reward is based on sincere intention and effort. Scholars encourage the elderly and those who struggle with full fasting to do what they can โ even if it is two or three days โ and Allah rewards according to intention and capacity.
Is there a specific dua for Shawwal fasts? No dua is specifically narrated for the six days. Follow the same suhoor and iftar duas used in Ramadan. The virtues of fasting in islam article covers the broader duas and context.
What if Shawwal ends and I only completed four days? The partial reward of four Shawwal fasts is still significant โ but you will miss the "full year of fasting" reward described in the hadith. There is no making it up in another month. Learn from this year and plan better next Shawwal.
The Month After Ramadan Is Still Sacred
Shawwal is the first month after Ramadan โ but it is still a month in which the believer can accumulate extraordinary reward. Six short fasts, properly intended and executed, complete what Ramadan began.
Do not let Eid be the last moment of your Ramadan transformation. Let it be the first day of your Shawwal practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the reward of fasting six days of Shawwal?
The Prophet said that whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they have fasted the entire year. This is because each good deed is multiplied by ten โ 30 days of Ramadan plus 6 days of Shawwal equals 36 days, which when multiplied by 10 equals 360, approximately one year.
Do the six days of Shawwal have to be consecutive?
No. The six days can be fasted consecutively or spread throughout Shawwal. The Prophet did not specify a particular order. You can fast Monday and Thursday as usual and count them toward your six, or fast six days in a row early in Shawwal. Any combination within the month of Shawwal is valid.
Can I fast the six days of Shawwal if I have missed Ramadan fasts?
Scholars differ on this. The majority view is that you should complete your missed Ramadan fasts (qada) first before doing Shawwal fasts, because the hadith says 'whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with Shawwal.' However, some scholars permit combining intentions or fasting Shawwal while planning to make up Ramadan fasts later.
When can I start fasting Shawwal?
The first day of Shawwal is Eid al-Fitr โ fasting on Eid is forbidden. Begin your Shawwal fasts from the 2nd of Shawwal onward. Shawwal has 29 or 30 days, giving you plenty of time to complete the six days comfortably.
Does fasting Shawwal have to be in the same year as Ramadan?
Yes. Shawwal is the month immediately after Ramadan. The six fasts must be done within Shawwal of that year to earn the described reward. You cannot do them in a later month.
