In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You may have searched this out of genuine fear โ feeling like something is wrong that you cannot explain, or suspecting someone has used black magic against you or your family. Or you may be here because you want to understand how to protect yourself before anything happens.
Both are valid. Islam takes sihr (black magic) seriously โ it names it in the Quran, condemns its practice as a major sin, and provides a detailed protective and curative toolkit rooted in Quran and Sunnah. Here is how to actually use it.
Why This Matters
Allah says in the Quran that the people of magic were taught:
ููู ูุง ููุนููููู ูุงูู ู ููู ุฃูุญูุฏู ุญูุชููููฐ ูููููููุง ุฅููููู ูุง ููุญููู ููุชูููุฉู ููููุง ุชูููููุฑู
"But they do not teach anyone unless they say: We are a trial, so do not disbelieve."
โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102)
Magic is real, it causes harm, and practicing it is kufr. But Allah's protection is also real, and it is far more powerful. The Prophet ๏ทบ himself was affected by magic (Sahih Bukhari 3268) โ and was cured by the angel Jibreel guiding him to specific Quran verses. This establishes both the reality of the harm and the reality of the cure.
The Prophetic toolkit for protection from magic is not esoteric or inaccessible. It is composed of practices every Muslim can do every single day. The people most vulnerable to sihr are often those whose daily connection to Quran and adhkar is weak.
Step-by-Step Guide to Protection From Black Magic
Step 1: Establish the morning and evening adhkar without fail.
This is the foundational protection. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each in the morning and evening โ those three surahs are sufficient protection for him against everything. (Abu Dawud 5082). Do not skip this.
The morning adhkar also includes:

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Aleem
"In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing in the earth or heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing."
Whoever says this three times in the morning and evening will not be harmed by any sudden affliction. โ (Abu Dawud 5088, Tirmidhi 3388)
Step 2: Recite Ayatul Kursi after every fard prayer.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death." (An-Nasa'i, Sahih). This ayah establishes Allah's absolute authority and protection โ it is specifically cited in ruqyah (Islamic healing recitation) for its protective power.
Step 3: Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your home regularly.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Recite Surah Al-Baqarah in your homes, for Shaytan does not enter a home in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited." (Sahih Muslim 780). This surah also contains Ayatul Kursi and the final two ayat (285-286), both of which are specifically recommended for protection.
Step 4: Never visit magicians, fortune tellers, or soothsayers.
This is the critical prohibition. If someone tells you they can cure you of magic using magic, or using spirits, or using anything outside of Quran and Sunnah โ do not engage with them. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever goes to a fortune teller or soothsayer and believes what they say has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad." (Abu Dawud 3904). The cure for magic is never more magic.
Step 5: Maintain your salah, especially at the five prayer times.
The Prophet ๏ทบ described salah as a shield. Consistently maintaining the five prayers at their proper times is the most foundational spiritual protection available. A Muslim whose prayers are strong and consistent is in a fundamentally different spiritual state from one whose prayers are irregular.
Step 6: Recite ruqyah on yourself if you have symptoms.
Ruqyah is the practice of reciting Quran and authentic duas over yourself for healing and protection. The foundational ruqyah recitation includes Al-Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, the last two ayat of Al-Baqarah, and the three Quls. The Prophet ๏ทบ performed ruqyah on himself and his Companions. You do not need a specialist for this โ you can do it yourself.
Step 7: Strengthen your tawakkul (reliance on Allah).
Fear of black magic beyond a reasonable level of awareness is itself a spiritual problem. The believer's relationship with harm and protection is built on tawakkul โ trusting that no harm reaches you except by Allah's permission, and that Allah's protection is available. See what is taqwa in Islam to build this foundation.
Making It Stick โ The Habit Science
The most effective protection against black magic in Islam is not a one-time ritual โ it is a daily practice. This is important: the people who consistently do their adhkar, maintain their salah, and recite Quran in their homes are building a protective spiritual environment that is difficult to breach.
This is similar to how physical immunity works: it is built through consistent daily practice, not emergency treatments. The daily adhkar are your immune system. Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah in the home is your household protection. Salah is your anchor.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Going to practitioners of magic for a cure. Any cure that involves spirits, supernatural entities outside of Allah's command, or secret rituals is haram regardless of whether it seems to work. The ends do not justify the means when the means involve shirk.
Attributing all problems to black magic. Not every difficulty, health problem, or relationship struggle is caused by magic. Islam encourages using both material means (medicine, counseling, practical problem-solving) and spiritual means. Attributing everything to magic leads to paranoia and misses the actual cause of problems.
Doing the adhkar only when afraid. Protection works through consistency, not crisis. Do your adhkar every morning and every evening โ not only when you feel threatened.
Neglecting the basics of iman. The most powerful protection is a genuine, consistent relationship with Allah through salah, Quran, and dhikr. Magic has difficulty affecting a person whose spiritual practice is strong. Neglecting the basics and looking for "extra protection" is backwards.
Common Questions
Can black magic make someone stop loving you? Yes. Sihr Al-Mahabba (love magic) and Sihr Al-Tafriq (separation magic) are both documented in Islamic sources. Both can affect the heart. The cure for their effects is the same as for other forms of sihr: ruqyah, consistent adhkar, and sincere dua to Allah.
Is breaking someone else's magic on them using Quran and dua permissible? Yes. Performing ruqyah on another person using Quran and authentic duas is permissible and is a Sunnah. What is not permissible is using magic to counter magic.
What is the most powerful dua for protection from magic? The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Say: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every evil that He has created." (Sahih Muslim 2708). This โ along with the three Quls โ is the most directly protective dua cited in authentic hadith.
Start Today, Not Tomorrow
You do not need to wait until you feel threatened to build your protection. The morning and evening adhkar take five to ten minutes per day. Reciting Ayatul Kursi after each prayer takes thirty seconds. Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah in your home once a week can be done in two sittings.
Build these habits now. See dua for protection from shaytan for the specific supplications, and surah for protection for the Quran recitation toolkit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is black magic real according to Islam?
Yes. Black magic (sihr) is real and explicitly mentioned in the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102). It is also severely haram โ the Prophet listed it among the seven destructive sins. (Sahih Bukhari 2766). Sihr can affect a person, and Islam provides both prevention and cure through the Prophetic toolkit. Believing it does not exist is theologically incorrect; obsessing over it to the point of paranoia is also wrong.
What is the best protection against black magic?
The most powerful and consistent protection is the daily adhkar โ morning and evening supplications, Ayatul Kursi after every fard prayer, and reciting the three Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) morning and evening. The Prophet said that whoever recites these three surahs morning and evening, they are sufficient protection for everything. (Abu Dawud 5082, Tirmidhi 3399).
What should I do if I think I have been affected by black magic?
The first step is increasing your protective adhkar and Quran recitation โ specifically Surah Al-Baqarah, which the Prophet said drives Shaytan out of the home and repels magic. The second is seeking ruqyah โ the Prophetic practice of reciting specific Quran verses for healing. Do not go to magicians or soothsayers for treatment โ using magic to undo magic is haram.
Can I protect my home from black magic?
Yes. The Prophet said: 'Do not turn your homes into graveyards โ Shaytan flees from the home in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.' (Sahih Muslim 780). Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah regularly in the home, ensuring salah is maintained in the home, and keeping the home free from prohibited items are all protective measures.
Is it haram to worry about or fear black magic?
Acknowledging that sihr exists and protecting yourself appropriately is not haram. What becomes problematic is when fear of sihr becomes paranoid or paralysing, or when it leads you to visit magicians and soothsayers for help โ which is haram. The believer's response to the reality of sihr is to rely on Allah through the Prophetic protective tools, not to live in fear.
