بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You are praying your five daily prayers — and that is the foundation. But you have probably heard that there is more. That the Companions rarely stopped at the obligatory. That the Prophet ﷺ's home was never empty of voluntary prayers.

Here is the honest entry point: you do not need to do everything at once. Sunnah prayers are a ladder, not a checklist. And once you understand the structure, adding them to your day becomes more manageable — and more meaningful — than you think.

Why This Matters — The Islamic Foundation

The Prophet ﷺ was explicit about the spiritual value of voluntary prayers:

"The first of the servant's deeds to be examined on the Day of Resurrection will be the prayer. If it is sound, he will have succeeded and prospered; if it is corrupt, he will have failed and lost. If something is lacking from his obligatory prayers, the Lord, Exalted be He, will say: 'Look and see if My servant has any voluntary prayers.' Then whatever is lacking from his obligatory prayers will be made up with them."

— (Tirmidhi 413, sahih)

Sunnah prayers are not just extra credit. They are the cushion that supports and completes the obligatory. They are the gap-filler for moments when khushu (presence of heart) was difficult. They are, in a very real sense, protection for your fard prayers.

And the Prophet ﷺ made a specific promise about the 12 rawatib rakats:

"Whoever regularly prays 12 rakats voluntarily throughout the day and night will have a house built for him in Paradise."

— (Tirmidhi 414, authenticated)

This is a specific, achievable target — not overwhelming, not vague.

Step-by-Step Guide: The Rawatib Prayers

The rawatib (الرواتب) are the regular sunnah prayers that accompany the five fard prayers. These are the most emphasized voluntary prayers in the Sunnah.

Step 1: The 2 Sunnah Before Fajr (Sunnah Muakkadah) Pray 2 rakats before the obligatory Fajr prayer. This is the most emphasized of all rawatib — the Prophet ﷺ said these two rakats are "better than the world and everything in it" (Sahih Muslim 725). Pray them lightly and quickly; the intention is to start the day with voluntary worship before the obligation.

Step 2: The 4 Sunnah Before Dhuhr (Sunnah Muakkadah) Pray 4 rakats before the obligatory Dhuhr. You can pray these as 4 consecutive rakats with one salam, or as 2+2 with a salam between each pair. The Prophet ﷺ regularly prayed these.

Step 3: The 2 Sunnah After Dhuhr (Sunnah Muakkadah) Pray 2 rakats after the obligatory Dhuhr. These complete the Dhuhr cluster and are among the 12 promised rakats.

Step 4: The 2 Sunnah After Maghrib (Sunnah Muakkadah) Pray 2 rakats after the obligatory Maghrib prayer — at home is preferred (the Prophet ﷺ would leave the mosque for these). The Quran recitation in the first rakat is typically Al-Kafirun; in the second, Al-Ikhlas — though any surah is valid.

Step 5: The 2 Sunnah After Isha (Sunnah Muakkadah) Pray 2 rakats after the obligatory Isha prayer. These are prayed quietly and complete your 12 daily rawatib.

That is 12 rakats total. If you maintain these consistently, you have already fulfilled the prophetic promise about a house in Jannah.

Beyond the Rawatib: Additional Sunnah Prayers

Once the rawatib are established, these additional prayers carry enormous reward:

Witr (وِتْر) — The Odd Rakat After Isha Minimum 1 rakat, maximum 11, always ending in an odd number. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned witr while traveling or at home. He called it a right (haqq) on every Muslim. Most scholars say it is strongly recommended (sunnah muakkadah); some Hanafi scholars consider it wajib (obligatory in practice). Pray it before sleeping or after Tahajjud if you pray the night prayer.

Duha (الضُّحى) — The Mid-Morning Prayer 2-8 rakats prayed between 15-20 minutes after sunrise until about 20 minutes before Dhuhr. The Prophet ﷺ recommended this prayer and called it the "prayer of the Awwabin" in some narrations. Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said the Prophet advised him to never abandon three things: witr, duha, and 2 rakats of sunnah before Fajr. (Sahih Muslim 721)

Tahajjud / Qiyam al-Layl (قِيَام الَّليل) Night prayer after sleeping, before Fajr. This is the most elevated voluntary prayer. 2-8 rakats (or more) with long recitation, followed by witr. The Prophet ﷺ described it as the most virtuous prayer after the obligatory. It is the prayer that changes people — those who maintain tahajjud consistently report a qualitative shift in their spiritual life. For a full guide, see how to pray tahajjud consistently.

Making It Stick — The Habit Science

The mistake most people make: they decide to pray all 12 rawatib plus witr plus tahajjud starting Monday. By Wednesday, they have missed Dhuhr sunnah and feel like failures.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent ones, even if small." (Sahih Bukhari 6464)

Start with what you can sustain. Here is a suggested progression:

Week 1: Just the 2 sunnah before Fajr. That is it. Pray them every single day without exception.

Week 2: Add the 2 sunnah after Maghrib.

Week 3: Add the 2 sunnah after Isha.

Week 4: Add the 4 sunnah before Dhuhr and 2 after Dhuhr.

You now have all 12 rawatib. Then, after these are established as habit (minimum 4 weeks of consistency), consider adding witr, then duha, then gradually tahajjud.

Anchoring each sunnah to its related fard prayer removes the decision-making burden. You do not ask yourself "should I pray Dhuhr sunnah?" — you simply stay on your prayer mat after the fard and continue. The transition between fard and sunnah should be seamless.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Starting too big. Pledging all 12 rawatib plus witr on day one almost always leads to abandonment. The nafs hates sustained effort more than large effort. Build gradually.

Praying sunnah in the mosque instead of at home for Maghrib and Isha. The Prophet ﷺ specifically went home to pray the Maghrib sunnah. These prayers carry particular merit when prayed at home — they fill the home with worship and light.

Reciting loudly in daytime sunnah prayers. Dhuhr, Asr, and their associated sunnah prayers are prayed quietly (silently) unless you are alone. The Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha sunnah prayers follow the same quiet recitation as well, though there is some scholarly latitude for the Fajr sunnah.

Giving up after missing a day. Missing a day is not failure — it is human. The Prophet ﷺ himself made up missed witr and qiyam prayers. Resume the next day. The habit is the goal, not a perfect record.

Common Questions

Should sunnah prayers be prayed in congregation or alone? Sunnah prayers are generally prayed alone, at home. The congregational prayer in the mosque is specifically for the fard. Praying sunnah prayers consistently at home fills the home with barakah and is closer to the prophetic practice.

What if I combine Dhuhr and Asr while traveling — do I still pray sunnah? When traveling, the Prophet ﷺ dropped most sunnah prayers except the 2 before Fajr and witr. So while traveling, focus on the rawatib before Fajr and witr — the rest can be suspended during genuine travel.

Can women pray sunnah prayers during their period? During menstruation, obligatory and sunnah salah are not performed. However, dhikr, dua, and Quran (from memory or by touching a phone/device without physical contact with the mushaf, according to some scholars) remain available forms of worship.

The Quality That Matters Most

Praying 12 rakats of sunnah while distracted and rushed is less valuable than 4 rakats prayed with presence. As you build the habit of sunnah prayers, begin also building khushu in salah — the quality of heart that transforms prayer from motion to connection.

The sunnah prayers are not just a quantity game. They are training sessions for your heart. Each pair of rakats is another opportunity to stand before Allah with full attention — to practice what the fard prayers also require.

Start today. Two rakats before Fajr. Then stay on your mat for the 2 sunnah. Then sleep knowing that tomorrow, you will do it again.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the sunnah prayers in Islam?

Sunnah prayers include the rawatib (regular voluntary prayers around the five daily prayers), witr (odd-numbered prayer after Isha), tahajjud/qiyam al-layl (night prayer), duha (mid-morning prayer), and salat al-awwabin (after Maghrib). The rawatib consist of 12 rakats daily that the Prophet ﷺ consistently maintained.

How many rakats are in the 12 sunnah prayers?

The 12 rawatib sunnah prayers: 2 before Fajr, 4 before Dhuhr, 2 after Dhuhr, 2 after Maghrib, and 2 after Isha. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever maintains these 12 rakats daily will have a house built for them in Jannah (Tirmidhi 414, sahih).

How do I pray sunnah prayers — is the method different from fard?

The physical method is the same as fard salah. The key differences: sunnah prayers are performed quietly (even Dhuhr and Isha sunnahs are recited quietly unless you are alone), and niyyah (intention) is for the voluntary prayer. Two rakats is the most common unit for sunnah prayers.

Can I pray sunnah prayers if I missed the fard?

If you missed the fard prayer, make up the fard first, then pray the associated sunnah if applicable. The sunnah of Fajr specifically: if you wake up after sunrise having missed Fajr, pray the 2 sunnah rakats first then the 2 fard — this follows a specific prophetic practice.

What time should I not pray sunnah prayers?

There are three forbidden times for any voluntary prayer: at exact sunrise, when the sun is at its zenith (midday), and at exact sunset. Avoid praying any nafl prayers during these windows. Otherwise, voluntary prayers can be prayed at any time.
