If you are new to Islam, coming back to prayer after a break, or teaching someone to pray, the rakat count question is one of the first things you need to get right. Getting it wrong is not just a minor error — an incomplete prayer may not be valid.
The answer is not complicated, but it does have layers. There are fard (obligatory) rakats, sunnah rakats, and witr — and each prayer has a different combination. This guide makes the whole picture clear so you can approach salah without second-guessing yourself.
The Short Answer
| Prayer | Fard (Obligatory) Rakats |
|---|---|
| Fajr | 2 |
| Dhuhr | 4 |
| Asr | 4 |
| Maghrib | 3 |
| Isha | 4 |
| Total fard per day | 17 |
Seventeen obligatory rakats per day. That is the non-negotiable foundation.
The Evidence for the Rakat Counts
The five daily prayers with their rakat counts were established during the Prophet's ﷺ Night Journey (Isra wal Mi'raj) and refined through his practice. The hadith of Aisha رضي الله عنها records: "Prayer was originally obligated as two rakats, then it was increased for the resident, and the prayer of the traveller was kept as it was." (Sahih Bukhari 350, Sahih Muslim 685)
The Companions meticulously recorded the Prophet's exact practice, and the rakat counts became one of the most firmly established aspects of the deen — transmitted through tawatur (mass narration from so many people that error is impossible).
Full Breakdown — Fard and Sunnah Rakats
The fard rakats are your minimum. But the Prophet ﷺ prayed additional sunnah rakats around each prayer, and he described them as keys to Jannah. Here is the full picture:
Fajr (Before Sunrise)
- 2 Sunnah Muakkadah (before fard) — the Prophet ﷺ said: "The two rakats of Fajr are better than this world and everything in it." (Sahih Muslim 725)
- 2 Fard
- Total recommended: 4 rakats
Dhuhr (Midday)
- 4 Sunnah Muakkadah (before fard)
- 4 Fard
- 2 Sunnah Muakkadah (after fard)
- 2 Nafl (optional, non-muakkadah)
- Total recommended: 10-12 rakats
Asr (Afternoon)
- 4 Sunnah Ghayr Muakkadah (before fard — optional, not confirmed sunnah)
- 4 Fard
- Total minimum: 4 fard (most people focus on this)
Maghrib (After Sunset)
- 3 Fard
- 2 Sunnah Muakkadah (after fard)
- 2 Nafl (optional)
- Total recommended: 5-7 rakats
Isha (Night)
- 4 Sunnah Ghayr Muakkadah (before fard — optional)
- 4 Fard
- 2 Sunnah Muakkadah (after fard)
- 3 Witr (wajib in Hanafi school, strongly recommended sunnah in others)
- 2 Nafl (optional, after witr according to some scholars)
- Total recommended: 9-11 rakats
What Are Muakkadah and Ghayr Muakkadah?
Sunnah Muakkadah (confirmed sunnah) — practices the Prophet ﷺ performed consistently and rarely missed. Abandoning these without a valid excuse is considered blameworthy (makruh), though not sinful in the same way as missing fard.
Sunnah Ghayr Muakkadah (non-confirmed sunnah) — practices the Prophet ﷺ sometimes performed but did not maintain consistently. Praying these is rewarded; missing them is not blameworthy.
Nafl — voluntary prayers beyond the sunnah categories. Each rakat is rewarded, and they build the habit of being in the state of salah.
The Importance of Witr
Witr is often discussed separately because of its special status. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Witr is a right upon every Muslim. Whoever wishes may pray five rakats, whoever wishes may pray three, and whoever wishes may pray one." (Abu Dawud 1422)
For Hanafi scholars, witr (3 rakats) is wajib — an obligation below fard but above sunnah. Missing it intentionally requires making it up. For other schools, it is a strongly recommended sunnah.
The Prophet ﷺ never missed witr. It typically follows Isha, though it can be prayed at any point through the night until Fajr begins.
Understanding the Total Daily Practice
If you pray all muakkadah sunnah prayers and witr, your daily prayer count is approximately:
Fajr sunnah (2) + Fajr fard (2) + Dhuhr sunnah before (4) + Dhuhr fard (4) + Dhuhr sunnah after (2) + Asr fard (4) + Maghrib fard (3) + Maghrib sunnah (2) + Isha fard (4) + Isha sunnah (2) + Witr (3) = 32 rakats
This is the full sunnah daily prayer practice. Many Muslims aim for this; others focus on the 17 fard first and add sunnah gradually.
Building Your Prayer Habit from Where You Are
If you are just returning to prayer or learning for the first time, start with the fard. Seventeen rakats may feel like a lot when you are restarting — but they average out to about one minute per rakat, less than 20 minutes total across the entire day.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small." (Sahih Bukhari 6464)

Common Questions
What happens if I pray 3 rakats of Dhuhr by mistake?
If you realise before finishing, you can stand up and complete the fourth rakat, then perform sajdah sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) at the end. If you have already made the final salaam and left the prayer state, you typically need to repeat the prayer.
Do I have to pray the sunnah prayers?
The muakkadah sunnahs carry significant reward and are strongly encouraged. The Prophet ﷺ said about the 12 sunnah rakats: "Whoever prays 12 rakats a day and night, Allah will build for him a house in Jannah." (Sahih Muslim 728) They are not obligatory, but the one who neglects them without reason is missing great reward.
Can I pray the sunnah prayers after the fard if I missed them?
Yes, for muakkadah sunnahs. If you missed the 4 Dhuhr sunnah before the fard because you arrived late to the masjid, you can pray them after the fard. For Fajr sunnah specifically, the Prophet ﷺ permitted making it up after Fajr fard if missed.
Does the tasbih after salah count as part of the prayer?
No — tasbih after salah (saying subhanallah 33 times, alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 34 times after each prayer) is a separate dhikr practice done after prayer, not part of the rakat count.
When travelling, how many rakats should I pray?
When travelling the qualifying distance, the 4-rakat fard prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) are shortened to 2 rakats each. Fajr and Maghrib remain unchanged. See how to pray on time consistently for consistency tips.
Start Today — Seventeen Rakats at a Time
Seventeen fard rakats. That is the foundation. That is what separates a day lived with salah from a day without it.
You do not need to go from zero to thirty-two overnight. Start with the seventeen. Make them consistent. Then, one by one, add the sunnah rakats as they become natural.
The Prophet ﷺ's practice was not a single leap — it was daily, deliberate, consistent effort. Mimic that, and the connection you are looking for builds itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rakats is Fajr prayer?
Fajr has 2 fard (obligatory) rakats. It also has 2 sunnah muakkadah (confirmed sunnah) rakats before the fard, making the total Fajr practice 4 rakats (2 sunnah + 2 fard). The Prophet ﷺ never missed the 2 Fajr sunnah.
How many rakats is Dhuhr prayer?
Dhuhr has 4 fard rakats. The full Dhuhr practice is 4 sunnah + 4 fard + 2 sunnah = 10 rakats total. The 4 sunnah before and 2 sunnah after are muakkadah (confirmed).
How many rakats is Asr prayer?
Asr has 4 fard rakats. There are 4 optional sunnah rakats before Asr, but these are non-muakkadah (not confirmed sunnah), so many scholars do not count them as a regular pre-Asr practice.
How many rakats is Maghrib prayer?
Maghrib has 3 fard rakats. It has 2 sunnah muakkadah rakats after the fard. Full Maghrib practice: 3 fard + 2 sunnah = 5 rakats.
How many rakats is Isha prayer?
Isha has 4 fard rakats. It has 2 sunnah muakkadah rakats after the fard, plus 3 witr (which are wajib according to Hanafi scholars, and a strongly recommended sunnah for others). Full Isha practice: 4 fard + 2 sunnah + 3 witr = 9 rakats.
