بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Fajr is two fard rakats. That is the core obligatory prayer you must pray before sunrise. But there are also 2 sunnah rakats that come before the fard — and these are among the most emphasized voluntary prayers in all of Islam.

Here is the complete breakdown: what to pray, in what order, and what to do when life does not cooperate with a pre-sunrise alarm.

The Short Answer

Fajr prayer = 4 rakats total:

PrayerRakatsType
Sunnah Qabliyya (before fard)2Sunnah Muakkadah
Fard (obligatory)2Fard

The 2 sunnah rakats come before the 2 fard rakats. Pray the sunnah, then enter the fard prayer.

The Evidence — Why the Fajr Sunnah Matters So Much

Most sunnah prayers are suspended during travel. The Fajr sunnah is not. The Prophet ﷺ maintained it wherever he was.

"The Prophet ﷺ was most diligent about the two rakats before Fajr and the Asr prayer."

— (Sahih Bukhari 1233)

And his words about their value:

"The two rakats of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it."

— (Sahih Muslim 725)

Think about what he is saying. Every worldly possession, every experience, every thing of value in the dunya — those two short rakats outweigh all of it in divine reward.

If you had to choose just one sunnah prayer to protect above all others, this is the one.

How to Pray Fajr Step by Step

Step 1: The 2 Sunnah Rakats

Make niyyah (intention) for the 2 sunnah rakats of Fajr.

  • Rakat 1: Surah Al-Fatiha + Surah Al-Kafirun (or any surah). Recite quietly.
  • Rakat 2: Surah Al-Fatiha + Surah Al-Ikhlas (or any surah). Recite quietly.
  • End with one Tasleem (Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah to the right, then left).

These are prayed quickly and lightly. The Prophet ﷺ prayed them briefly — the point is to establish them, not to make them long.

Step 2: The 2 Fard Rakats

Make niyyah for the 2 fard rakats of Fajr.

  • Rakat 1: Surah Al-Fatiha + any surah. Recite aloud (jahri — Fajr is an audible prayer).
  • Rakat 2: Surah Al-Fatiha + any surah. Recite aloud.
  • End with one Tasleem.

After salah: Recite Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls (3x each), and morning adhkar. Then remain seated if possible through the forbidden time until ishraq — scholars report a full Hajj and Umrah reward for those who do (Tirmidhi 586).

The Details and Common Cases

What if the congregation starts before I finish my sunnah?

If the iqamah (call to begin congregational prayer) is given while you are in the middle of your Fajr sunnah, finish the sunnah if you are close to completing it (within one rakat), then join the congregation. If you are just starting it, leave it and join the congregation immediately. You can pray the sunnah rakats after the fard prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When the iqamah is given, there is no prayer except the obligatory one." (Sahih Muslim 710)

What if I wake up after sunrise?

This is one of the most common practical questions about Fajr. The answer is reassuringly clear.

The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions once slept through Fajr while on a journey — they woke after sunrise. The Prophet said: "There is no negligence in sleep, only negligence is in wakefulness." He then prayed the 2 sunnah rakats first, then the 2 fard. (Sahih Muslim 680)

If you wake up after sunrise:

  1. Pray the 2 sunnah rakats.
  2. Then pray the 2 fard rakats.
  3. No expiation (kaffarah) is required — sleeping through is forgiven. Simply pray when you wake.

This is not a license to sleep late intentionally. The Prophet ﷺ identified intentionally missing Fajr as a serious spiritual issue. But genuine sleep — this is forgiven.

What if I arrive at the mosque and the fard has already started?

Join the congregation for the 2 fard rakats. Then, after the prayer ends, pray your 2 sunnah rakats. The Prophet ﷺ permitted making up the Fajr sunnah immediately after the fard in this specific case (Abu Dawud 1267). Do not pray them during the khutbah or in a way that creates confusion — pray them quietly to the side after the fard is finished.

Don't Let Doubt Win — And Do Not Overthink Missed Days

Missing Fajr is one of the most common spiritual struggles for Muslims globally. The nafs plus modern life plus sleep deprivation make it genuinely difficult. Here is what not to do:

Do not skip Fajr because you already missed the "perfect" time. If you woke 20 minutes after Fajr ended — the ruling says pray it now. Not tomorrow. Not "I'll start again next week." Now.

Do not catastrophize a missed day. Tawbah (repentance) is always available. The door is always open. Return to the prayer and ask forgiveness — then build structures so tomorrow is different.

Do not skip the sunnah because you are already late. If you are rushing and barely have time for the fard — pray the fard, pray the sunnah after, and note what arrangements need to change so this is not the daily pattern.

The principle: certainty removes doubt. You know Fajr is required. You know the sunnah is strongly recommended. Act on what you know and stop letting uncertainty or guilt paralyze you.

Quick Reference

Fajr at a glance:

  • Total rakats: 4 (2 sunnah + 2 fard)
  • Sunnah type: Muakkadah (most emphasized of all rawatib)
  • Recitation: Quiet for sunnah, Aloud for fard
  • When: From true dawn (Fajr sadiq) until sunrise
  • If missed: Pray as soon as you wake up (sunnah first, then fard)
  • Time forbidden: After sunrise, do not start new prayer until 15+ minutes post-sunrise

Common Questions

Can I pray Fajr at home instead of the mosque? Yes. Praying Fajr at home is valid. Congregation at the mosque carries more reward (27 times according to some narrations), but praying Fajr alone at home is far better than missing it entirely.

What if I am consistently unable to wake up for Fajr? Practical steps that work: set two alarms on opposite sides of the room, sleep earlier, make wudu before sleep (the Prophet ﷺ recommended it), and sincerely make dua before sleeping that Allah allows you to wake for Fajr. For a full strategy, see how to never miss Fajr again and sunnah before Fajr.

Does traveling change the Fajr prayer? The 2 fard rakats remain the same while traveling (Fajr is not shortened further — it already has just 2 fard rakats). The 2 sunnah rakats are kept even while traveling, unlike the sunnah of other prayers. The Prophet ﷺ never omitted the Fajr sunnah while traveling. See how many rakats in each prayer for the full picture of how travel affects other prayers.

Is qunut dua required in Fajr? This is a point of scholarly difference. The Shafi'i and some other scholars recommend making the qunut dua in the second rakat of Fajr (after rising from ruku). Hanafi scholars generally do not. Both positions have valid scholarly basis. Follow the practice of your community or madhab.

The Morning That Changes Everything

Fajr is 15-20 minutes of your morning. Two rakats of voluntary prayer. Two rakats of obligatory prayer. The morning adhkar. That is it.

But those 20 minutes decide the spiritual character of your entire day. The day that begins with Fajr is a different day than the one that starts with the snooze button. The nafs knows this. That is exactly why it fights Fajr so hard.

Protect these 4 rakats. Build the structures your life needs to make them happen. And when you miss — return immediately, without guilt-spiraling. The prayer is waiting. Allah is waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rakats is Fajr prayer?

Fajr has a total of 4 rakats: 2 sunnah rakats (prayed before the fard) and 2 fard (obligatory) rakats. The 2 sunnah rakats are the most emphasized of all the rawatib sunnah prayers. The 2 fard rakats are the obligatory core of the prayer.

Do you have to pray the 2 sunnah rakats of Fajr?

The 2 sunnah rakats before Fajr are sunnah muakkadah — strongly emphasized. The Prophet ﷺ never abandoned them, even while traveling (unlike other sunnah prayers). He called them 'better than the world and everything in it' (Sahih Muslim 725). They are not obligatory but are among the highest priority of all sunnah prayers.

What if I wake up after sunrise and missed Fajr?

If you wake up after sunrise, first pray the 2 sunnah rakats, then immediately pray the 2 fard rakats. The Prophet ﷺ did exactly this when he woke late after Khandaq (Sahih Muslim 680). There is no sin for genuinely sleeping through Fajr — pray it as soon as you wake up.

Can I pray Fajr sunnah after the fard if I missed it?

Yes, if you arrived at the mosque and the fard prayer was already in progress (and you joined the congregation), you should pray the 2 sunnah rakats after the fard. The Prophet ﷺ sanctioned making up the Fajr sunnah after the fard in this case (Abu Dawud 1267).

What is recited in the Fajr prayer specifically?

Fajr prayer is prayed aloud (jahri). Any surah can be recited after Al-Fatiha. The Prophet ﷺ commonly recited longer surahs in Fajr compared to other prayers — sometimes Surah Al-Waqiah, Surah Al-Kahf, or other medium-length surahs. The Fajr sunnah is typically prayed quickly with short surahs (Al-Kafirun and Al-Ikhlas are Sunnah for the 2 sunnah rakats).
