How to fast six days of Shawwal in Islam

You did it. You made it through Ramadan. Eid was wonderful. And now, somewhere in the back of your mind, you know that Shawwal has started and there are six more fasts on the table โ€” fasts that the Prophet ๏ทบ said are equivalent to fasting the entire year.

The intention is there. The problem is that Eid brings guests, late nights, feasting, and a return to normal routine that makes it genuinely hard to stay in fasting mode.

This guide is about actually finishing the six. Not just knowing about them โ€” finishing them.

Why This Sunnah Matters

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

Man sama Ramadana thumma atba'ahu sittan min Shawwali kana ka siyamid-dahr

"Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the entire year."

โ€” (Sahih Muslim 1164)

The math behind this is elegant: Islam multiplies each good deed by ten. 30 days of Ramadan x 10 = 300 reward units. 6 days of Shawwal x 10 = 60 reward units. Total: 360 โ€” the approximate number of days in a lunar year. This is not a metaphor. It is the arithmetic of mercy.

On top of that, fasting after Ramadan signals to your nafs that Ramadan was a training ground, not a finish line. The person who snaps back to old patterns on the 2nd of Shawwal has not lost what they gained โ€” but the one who maintains the momentum extends and deepens it.

Step-by-Step: How to Actually Fast Six Days of Shawwal

Step 1 โ€” Make the intention on Eid night or Eid day. Before the rush of Eid begins, decide: "I am going to fast six days this month." Write down the dates if you prefer specific ones, or simply commit to getting six done before Shawwal ends. Intention without planning is how these fasts slip away year after year.

Step 2 โ€” Do NOT fast on Eid day (1st Shawwal). This is haram. The Prophet ๏ทบ explicitly forbade fasting on both Eid days. Your Shawwal fasts begin on the 2nd of Shawwal at the earliest.

Step 3 โ€” Choose your pattern based on your life.

  • Consecutive (days 2-7 of Shawwal): Get them done immediately before life disrupts you. This is ideal if you have good momentum coming out of Ramadan.
  • Spaced โ€” 2 per week: Fast Mondays and Thursdays through the first three weeks. This doubles the reward (the Prophet fasted Mondays and Thursdays regularly) and spreads the load.
  • Any 6 you can fit in: If life is genuinely unpredictable โ€” new baby, travel, illness โ€” commit to whatever 6 days you can manage before the month ends. No pattern is obligatory.

Step 4 โ€” Prepare your suhoor (pre-dawn meal). This is where intention meets habit. Set your alarm. Eat something light but sustaining โ€” dates, oats, eggs, whatever keeps you going. The nafs will suggest skipping suhoor and sleeping in. Do not listen. Getting up for suhoor is the act that makes the fast real.

Step 5 โ€” Use the fast productively. You already know how to fast from Ramadan. The Shawwal fasts are shorter (days are naturally longer in some parts of the world than Ramadan depending on the year, but spiritually the practice is the same). Use the daytime hunger as a reminder of Allah. Do your dhikr. Recite Quran if you built that habit in Ramadan โ€” do not let it go.

Step 6 โ€” Track your fasts. Write a simple tally. Cross off each day as you complete it. Six checkboxes. This sounds trivial but it works โ€” having a visible record of progress keeps you accountable, especially when you are on day 3 and the motivation is lower than it was on day 1.

Making It Stick โ€” The Habit Science of Continuation

The Prophet ๏ทบ loved consistent small deeds above impressive but sporadic ones. He said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most regular, even if they are small." (Sahih Bukhari 6465)

Ramadan builds a habit of fasting. Shawwal is the first test of whether that habit continues. Habit science confirms what the Sunnah teaches: the moment of greatest vulnerability in a habit is right after a period of success. You feel you have "earned" a break. The nafs is convincing on this point.

Anchor the fasts to something already in your routine. If you are already fasting Mondays and Thursdays year-round, continue those. If you make a routine of waking for Fajr, attaching suhoor to that is natural.

Tell someone. Accountability accelerates habit formation. Tell your spouse, a friend, or your family that you intend to fast the six. You will be more likely to follow through when someone knows your intention.

Common Mistakes That Derail the Six Fasts

Mistake 1 โ€” Starting too late. People who say "I'll start next week after Eid is over" often run out of Shawwal. The month is only 29-30 days. Eid celebrations eat 3-5 of them. Start the 2nd of Shawwal.

Mistake 2 โ€” Being all-or-nothing. "I didn't do them consecutively so it doesn't count." Wrong. Six fasts completed in any valid pattern across Shawwal count. Do not let a missed consecutive day make you quit entirely.

Mistake 3 โ€” Not skipping the 1st. Even experienced Muslims sometimes need the reminder: no fasting on Eid day. This is a serious prohibition, not a preference.

Mistake 4 โ€” Forgetting that women who menstruated can still get the reward. Many women lose the intention to fast Shawwal because they feel they missed too many Ramadan days. Make up what you can, then fast the six. The door to this reward is open.

Common Questions

Do I get any reward if I fast some but not all six? Yes โ€” each day of voluntary fasting has its own reward. The specific "equivalent to a full year" reward applies to the complete six days after a complete Ramadan. But partial completion is still good.

Can I fast the six days of Shawwal if I did not fast all of Ramadan? The hadith links the reward specifically to completing Ramadan first. If you missed some Ramadan fasts, it is recommended to make those up before or during Shawwal. However, fasting voluntary days even in this situation is still a good deed.

Is it haram to fast on specific days of Shawwal? Only the 1st of Shawwal (Eid) is haram. The rest of the month is open. There are no other prohibited days in Shawwal.

Seal Your Ramadan With the Six

Ramadan is a gift. The six days of Shawwal are how you unwrap the last portion of that gift. The Prophet ๏ทบ did not teach this practice casually โ€” it is part of a complete system that keeps believers in a posture of regular remembrance, discipline, and worship throughout the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start fasting the six days of Shawwal?

Shawwal fasting begins on the 2nd of Shawwal โ€” the day after Eid al-Fitr. The 1st of Shawwal (Eid day) is forbidden to fast. You have the entire month of Shawwal (approximately 29-30 days) to complete the six fasts.

Do the six days of Shawwal have to be consecutive?

No. The Prophet did not specify that they must be fasted consecutively. You can spread them across the month of Shawwal in whatever pattern suits you โ€” some do them in the first week, others space them out.

What if I have missed Ramadan days to make up? Should I fast those first?

Scholarly opinions differ. Some scholars (including Imam Nawawi) say you should make up missed Ramadan days before fasting Shawwal to receive the full hadith reward. Others permit fasting Shawwal first. The safest approach is to make up missed days first if possible.

What is the reward for fasting six days of Shawwal?

The Prophet said: Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they fasted the entire year. This is because each good deed is multiplied tenfold: 30 days x 10 = 300, plus 6 x 10 = 60, totaling 360 days โ€” a full lunar year.

Can women who missed fasting days due to menstruation still get the Shawwal reward?

Yes, according to many scholars. Women who make up their missed days and then fast six days of Shawwal receive the equivalent reward. Some scholars also say that the reward is attained even if you fast six days of Shawwal without making up missed days first โ€” particularly if time is limited.
