How Many Fards Are There in Islam? A Clear, Practical Breakdown

One of the most common sources of religious anxiety for Muslims is not knowing exactly what is obligatory versus what is recommended. You want to pray correctly. You want to fulfill your duties. But when you are not sure what is fard (obligatory), what is wajib, and what is sunnah, doubt creeps in and makes every act of worship feel uncertain.

The Short Answer

Islam has no single universally agreed "number" of fards — because fard (obligation) applies across multiple categories: beliefs, rituals, physical acts of worship, financial duties, and ethical obligations. What we can do is walk through each category clearly.

The most commonly referenced count is the 78 fards taught in classical Hanafi education (covering beliefs, worship essentials, and conduct). But this number varies by school of thought and what categories are included.

The Evidence: What Makes Something Fard

Fard is derived from the Quran or mass-transmitted (mutawatir) hadith. The Arabic word means "obligation" or "something cut and determined." The Quran says: "Indeed, prayer is an obligation upon the believers at specified times." (Surah An-Nisa, 4:103) — this is fard.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Islam is built on five pillars." (Sahih Bukhari 8) — the five pillars are the core fard framework.

The Details and Common Cases

Fards of Belief (Arkan al-Iman)

Every Muslim must believe in:

1. Allah — His existence and oneness (tawhid)
2. The Angels
3. The Books (Quran, Torah, Injeel, Zabur, and others)
4. The Prophets and Messengers (and that Muhammad ﷺ is the last)
5. The Day of Judgment
6. Divine Decree (qadar) — both good and bad

These six beliefs are fard upon every Muslim adult.

Fards of Salah (Daily Prayer)

The five prayers are fard.

The fard rakat counts per prayer:

• Fajr: 2 rakats
• Dhuhr: 4 rakats
• Asr: 4 rakats
• Maghrib: 3 rakats
• Isha: 4 rakats

Total: 17 fard rakats per day.

Jummah (Friday) prayer: 2 fard rakats replace Dhuhr for men present in a congregation.

Fards of Wudu

In the Hanafi school, wudu has 4 fard acts:

1. Washing the face (once)
2. Washing both arms to and including the elbows (once)
3. Masah (wiping) at least a quarter of the head
4. Washing both feet to and including the ankles (once)

Everything else — rinsing the mouth, cleaning the nose, wiping the full head, doing them three times — is sunnah or mustahab.

Shafi'i school requires wiping the entire head and adds niyyah (intention) as a fard of wudu itself.

Fards of Ghusl (Ritual Bath)

Three fard acts make ghusl valid:

1. Rinsing the mouth (gargling) — Hanafi fard; Shafi'i and Maliki: sunnah
2. Sniffing water into the nostrils — same division as above
3. Washing the entire body without leaving any dry spot

In Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali: the essential fards of ghusl are just niyyah and washing the entire body.

Fards of the Five Pillars

1. Shahada (testimony of faith) — fard once in a lifetime with sincere belief
2. Salah — fard five times daily (see above)
3. Zakat — fard on eligible wealth above nisab, once per lunar year (2.5% of savings)
4. Sawm (fasting Ramadan) — fard for every sane, adult, healthy Muslim each Ramadan
5. Hajj — fard once in a lifetime for those physically and financially able

The prophetic principle to cut through this is clear: certainty is not removed by doubt. If you performed wudu and completed each fard act to the best of your ability, and you are not sure whether some tiny spot was missed — your wudu is valid. Certainty (you performed wudu) is not removed by doubt (maybe a spot was dry).

The Prophet ﷺ built in simplicity intentionally. The fard acts of wudu are four. Four. Not fourteen. If wudu required elaborate verification of every millimeter, the deen would be a burden — and Allah says: "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:185)

Is jummah prayer fard for women? No — Jummah is fard (obligatory) for adult male Muslims. It is not fard for women, children, travelers, or the ill, though they may attend. Women who attend receive the reward of Jummah prayer.
