In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You already know the words. You've been saying them since childhood. But somewhere between daily life and the background noise of everything else, La ilaha illallah can become a phrase you say rather than a truth you feel.

The question of how many times to say it each day is really a question about how to make it real again โ€” how to bring the weight of those four words back into your actual life, not just your lips.

What the Words Actually Mean

ู„ูŽุง ุฅูู„ูŽูฐู‡ูŽ ุฅูู„ูŽู‘ุง ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

La ilaha illallah

"There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah."

This is not a simple sentence. It is a negation followed by an affirmation: first la ilaha (no god) โ€” a sweeping denial of every false object of worship, fear, hope, and dependence โ€” then illallah (except Allah) โ€” the singular truth that everything else is built on.

The Prophet ๏ทบ called it the best dhikr: "The best thing I and the prophets before me have said is: La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la sharika lah." (Tirmidhi 3585)

What the Sunnah Says About Frequency

The honest answer: there is no single prescribed daily count that all scholars agree upon as obligatory. What exists is a rich tradition of recommendations.

100 times โ€” The most commonly cited number

The Prophet ๏ทบ described a specific extended form:

Man qala: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay'in qadir โ€” fi yawmin mi'ata marrah

"Whoever says 'There is no deity but Allah, alone, with no partner โ€” to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things competent' โ€” one hundred times in a day..."

โ€” has the reward equivalent to freeing ten slaves, 100 good deeds written, 100 sins erased, and protection from shaytan for that day. (Sahih Bukhari 3293)

This is specific, verified, and highly accessible. One hundred repetitions of this fuller form takes around five to eight minutes of focused recitation.

A constant remembrance โ€” no fixed ceiling

The Quran tells believers:

ูŠูŽุง ุฃูŽูŠูู‘ู‡ูŽุง ุงู„ูŽู‘ุฐููŠู†ูŽ ุขู…ูŽู†ููˆุง ุงุฐู’ูƒูุฑููˆุง ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูŽ ุฐููƒู’ุฑู‹ุง ูƒูŽุซููŠุฑู‹ุง

Ya ayyuhal-ladhina amanu udhkuruLlaha dhikran kathira

"O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance."

โ€” (Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:41)

Dhikran kathira โ€” much remembrance. This suggests the ceiling is not 100; it is unlimited. Scholars like Ibn al-Qayyim described believers who reached 1000, even 12,000 repetitions in a day during periods of intensive spiritual work. These are aspirational, not prescriptive.

Why Modern Muslims Struggle to Say It Consistently

The problem is not willingness. Most Muslims want to increase their dhikr. The problem is structure.

Dhikr without a trigger is easy to forget. You tell yourself "I'll say La ilaha illallah throughout the day" and then the day swallows you โ€” the meeting, the commute, the phone, the family โ€” and you reach Maghrib having said it twice.

The nafs is not actively hostile to dhikr, but it is indifferent. It will not remind you. That is your job.

How to Build the Daily Practice

Anchor it to an existing practice

The most effective approach is habit stacking โ€” attaching La ilaha illallah to something you already do every day without thinking.

  • After each salah: Dhikr after prayer is already established in the Sunnah. Add La ilaha illallah (100 times full form, or 33 times shortened) to your post-salah routine.
  • During commute: If you drive or travel, the car is a dedicated dhikr space. Turn off the radio or podcast for the first ten minutes and use that time.
  • Before sleep: The Prophet ๏ทบ recommended specific dhikr before sleeping. La ilaha illallah 100 times fits naturally into this window.

Use a tasbih counter

A tasbih (prayer beads) or digital counter is not a crutch โ€” it is a tool that frees your mind from counting so you can focus on meaning. Even experienced scholars use them. The goal is presence with the words, not arithmetic.

Focus on meaning, not speed

Saying La ilaha illallah fifty times with full awareness of what you are affirming is more valuable than saying it five hundred times at a mumble. Try this: for the first ten repetitions of each session, say each one slowly, dwelling on the negation (la ilaha โ€” nothing else deserves my trust, my fear, my hope) and then the affirmation (illallah โ€” only You, Allah).

The Spiritual Effect of Consistent Recitation

The scholars of the heart describe consistent La ilaha illallah as a polisher โ€” it removes the rust that accumulates on the heart through daily sin, distraction, and heedlessness. The more regularly you say it with presence, the clearer the mirror of your heart becomes.

The Prophet ๏ทบ described the person who dies with La ilaha illallah as their last words as entering Jannah (Sahih Bukhari 1237). This is not a trick to get in โ€” it is the culmination of a life oriented toward that truth. The person who says it consistently in life is the person most likely to say it at the end.

Common Questions

Can I say it silently at work or in public without moving my lips?

Yes. Silent dhikr in your heart is valid and the Prophet ๏ทบ taught it. When circumstances make audible dhikr awkward, the heart continues. Even on the bus, in a meeting, waiting in a queue โ€” the tongue of the heart can be busy.

Does saying it without understanding Arabic count?

Yes โ€” the reward of dhikr is not conditioned on understanding Arabic in the moment. However, knowing the meaning deepens your engagement significantly. Learn the translation once, deeply, and it will always be present when you recite.

What if I forget some days? Does that ruin the habit?

No. Missing a day or two does not erase the habit โ€” but the sooner you return, the better. Consistency over months matters more than perfection over weeks. See how to be istiqamah in Islam for more on building durable spiritual consistency.

Is La ilaha illallah different from the full Shahada?

The full declaration of faith is La ilaha illallah, Muhammadun Rasulullah. As dhikr, the shorter form is widely narrated and encouraged. For daily remembrance, the shorter form is what most hadith about dhikr count and reward refer to.

Starting Today

Don't start by committing to 1000 repetitions. Start with the full form from Bukhari 3293 โ€” one hundred times today, after Fajr or before Maghrib. Five to eight minutes. See how it feels.

The goal is not a number. The goal is a heart that recognises, again and again, that nothing in this world deserves the weight of dependence and fear except Allah โ€” and that the simple act of saying so, consistently, is one of the most powerful things a Muslim can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific number of times to say La Ilaha Illallah each day?

There is no prescribed fixed number for daily recitation. However, narrations mention 100 times as a particularly recommended amount, and some scholars describe reciting it 1000 times. The emphasis in hadith is on quality of presence and consistency, not hitting a quota.

What is the reward for saying La Ilaha Illallah 100 times?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever says 'La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadir' 100 times in a day gets the reward equivalent to freeing ten slaves, has 100 good deeds recorded, has 100 sins erased, and is protected from shaytan for that day. (Sahih Bukhari 3293)

What is the best time to say La Ilaha Illallah?

Morning and evening are the most recommended times, as part of the adhkar. Also: after salah, before sleeping, and during any moment of distress. The Prophet ๏ทบ particularly recommended it in the last part of the night.

Can I say La Ilaha Illallah in my heart without speaking aloud?

Yes โ€” silent dhikr (khafi) is valid and has its own virtues. Allah knows the movements of your heart. However, audible dhikr, even at a whisper, is generally considered more complete and engaging for most people.

Does La Ilaha Illallah alone constitute the shahada?

No โ€” the full shahada includes both parts: La ilaha illallah (there is no deity but Allah) and Muhammadun Rasulullah (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). As a dhikr, La ilaha illallah is powerful and encouraged; as the declaration of faith for a new Muslim, both parts are required.
