In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Neatly folded garments in cream and green tones beside a window with warm morning light, prayer beads nearby, peaceful and simple atmosphere

Think about the last time you got dressed. Did you think about it as an act of worship?

Probably not. Getting dressed is one of the most automatic things we do. Reach for clothes. Put them on. Move on with the day. The whole process barely registers as conscious action.

But you did something significant: you covered yourself with a blessing from Allah. Clothing โ€” the ability to protect yourself from weather, to maintain dignity, to present yourself to the world โ€” is a gift so constant that it has become invisible to us.

The Sunnah has a dua for this moment. It is short. It takes seconds. And it transforms a routine action into an act of gratitude that the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself practiced.

The Dua When Wearing New Clothes

When you put on a new garment, say:

Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtanihi, as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.

"O Allah, praise is for You. You have clothed me with this. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4020; Tirmidhi 1767)

When to say it: When you wear a new garment โ€” whether it is brand new from a shop or new to you for the first time. Say it as you put the item on.

For everyday dressing: Say Bismillah when putting on clothes and say the following when you see yourself in the mirror after getting dressed:

"Praise be to Allah Who clothed me with this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4023; Tirmidhi 3458)

The Story Behind It

Abu Nadhrah narrated that when the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) received new clothes, they would congratulate each other and say the dua. The practice of specifically marking the moment of receiving new clothing with remembrance of Allah was part of their daily spiritual life.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that whoever wears a new garment and says this dua, then gives the old garment as charity, will be under Allah's care while alive and dead (Tirmidhi 3560).

This connects clothing to three spiritual realities:

Gratitude (shukr): The dua begins with lakal-hamdu โ€” praise is for You. Not "I bought this." Not "I earned this." You clothed me. Wealth, opportunity, health to work and earn โ€” all from Allah. The garment is His gift.

Hope: Asking for the good of the garment and what it was made for places the clothing in a larger frame. Clothes can be used for modesty and dignity, or for pride and showing off. The dua is a request: let this garment serve good purposes.

Protection: Wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi โ€” and I seek refuge from its evil. Scholars note that the same garment that protects can corrupt: pride in clothing (kibr), excessive spending on fashion, using dress to attract forbidden attention. The dua builds a spiritual guardrail.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

Getting dressed is a daily, non-negotiable trigger. Here is how to attach this Sunnah to it:

  • For new clothes, say the full dua immediately. Before you walk out in the new item or look in the mirror โ€” say the dua. Make this the rule: new clothes go on, dua is said. No exceptions.

  • Put the everyday dua in your mirror. Write the transliteration of the shorter dua (Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani...) on a sticky note or small card and place it near your mirror. Every time you check your outfit, you see the reminder.

  • Start with Bismillah every morning. If the full duas feel like too much to learn at once, begin with just Bismillah when you put on your first item of clothing each day. This is the foundation. Once the habit is established, build on it.

  • Give away old clothes consciously. The hadith about combining the dua with charity is a powerful practice. When you receive new clothes, ask: which old item can go to someone who needs it? This act fulfills the Sunnah and purifies the blessing.

  • Reflect on the blessing. Pause for one moment while getting dressed and consider: there are people who will go without adequate clothing today. What you are putting on is not ordinary โ€” it is rizq from Allah.

Dua when looking in the mirror:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุฃูŽู†ู’ุชูŽ ุญูŽุณูŽู‘ู†ู’ุชูŽ ุฎูŽู„ู’ู‚ููŠ ููŽุญูŽุณูู‘ู†ู’ ุฎูู„ูู‚ููŠ

"O Allah, You have made my physical form beautiful, so beautify my character too." โ€” (Ahmad 3559)

Dua when wearing new clothes (congratulating others):

When you see a fellow Muslim in new clothes, it is Sunnah to say: Tubla wa tukhlif โ€” may you wear it out and Allah replace it. This is a beautiful practice that makes the blessing communal.

Dua for waking up:

Getting dressed follows waking up. See dua for waking up for the complete morning sequence that begins your day with gratitude before you even leave bed.

Dua for leaving the house:

After getting dressed, complete the Sunnah sequence with dua for leaving the house โ€” the dua that places your entire day under Allah's protection and guidance.

Common Questions

What counts as a "new" garment?

Scholars generally say any garment you are putting on for the first time โ€” whether it is freshly bought, gifted, or new to you specifically. If you have not worn it before, it qualifies for the full new-clothes dua.

What if I forget to say it when I first put on the clothes?

Say it when you remember. The primary benefit is in the acknowledgment, not the precise timing. If you realize an hour later that you forgot, pause and say the dua then โ€” it is better than not saying it at all.

Does the dua protect against buying too many clothes?

It is a nudge in that direction. When you say "I seek refuge from the evil of this garment," you are reminded that clothing can become a spiritual trap โ€” excessive shopping, israf (waste), vanity. The dua keeps that awareness alive.

Can I make the dua for clothes I am buying as a gift for someone?

Yes. You can make dua for any blessing you are giving to another Muslim โ€” that it brings them good and protects them from the spiritual pitfalls that can come with material gifts.

The Clothes You Wear Reflect Who You Are Becoming

Every garment you put on says something. Not just about taste or budget โ€” but about values, modesty, and gratitude.

The dua when putting on clothes does not change the garment. It changes you. It takes a person who grabs whatever is clean off the shelf and turns them into someone who receives every piece of clothing as a gift from Allah, uses it purposefully, and stays protected from the spiritual dangers of material attachment.

It is one short supplication. But over a lifetime of getting dressed โ€” which adds up to many thousands of times โ€” it shapes a character.

Say it today. The habit starts now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for putting on new clothes in Islam?

The dua for wearing new clothes is: Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtanihi, as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu โ€” O Allah, praise is for You. You have clothed me with this. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for (Abu Dawud 4020, Tirmidhi 1767).

Is there a general dua for getting dressed each day?

For getting dressed with any garment (not just new clothes), the Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended saying Bismillah when putting on clothes and expressing gratitude to Allah. The full dua is specifically recorded for new garments. For everyday dressing, saying Bismillah and reflecting on Allah's blessing of clothing is the Sunnah practice.

Does the dua have to be in Arabic?

You may make dua in any language. However, this particular dua has specific wording from the authentic Sunnah, and learning the Arabic allows you to fulfill the Sunnah precisely. The transliteration is included so you can learn the pronunciation โ€” the dua is short enough to memorize in a single sitting.

Should I say this dua every time I get dressed or only for new clothes?

The hadith specifically mentions new garments. For everyday dressing, saying Bismillah and making your own dua of gratitude is the practice. Some scholars recommend the full dua for any clothing you are wearing for the first time, including clothes that are new to you even if they are not brand new.

Why does the dua for clothes ask for refuge from the evil of the garment?

Clothing carries spiritual implications in Islam โ€” it can be a source of pride (kibr), showing off (riya), or extravagance (israf). Asking for refuge from the evil of the garment protects you from these spiritual dangers. What you wear affects how you carry yourself and whether you remember Allah's blessing or take it for granted.
