In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Dark dramatic clouds with golden light breaking through at the horizon over a landscape, warm amber and deep teal tones, John Singer Sargent inspired oil painting style

There is a flash across the sky. For a split second, the entire world lights up.

For most people, that moment passes. A glance at the window. Maybe a count for the thunder. Life continues.

For the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions, that flash was something else: a reminder. A moment to call on Allah. A sign so dramatic that only one response made sense โ€” turning to the One who created it.

We live in an age where lightning is explained scientifically: electrical discharge between clouds, or between clouds and the ground. That explanation is true. And it changes absolutely nothing about the fact that the same Allah who created the laws of electricity wrote them into existence. Every lightning bolt is His doing, playing out according to the patterns He set.

The dua for seeing lightning brings that reality back into focus. It takes a moment that usually passes unnoticed and turns it into worship.

The Dua When Seeing Lightning

When you see lightning, say:

"O Allah, do not kill us with Your anger, do not destroy us with Your punishment, and pardon us before that." โ€” (Tirmidhi 3450)

When to say it: The moment you see a flash of lightning โ€” indoors, outdoors, through a window. Any flash of lightning is the trigger.

For thunder specifically (the sound, not the flash), the companions would say:

ุณูุจู’ุญูŽุงู†ูŽ ุงู„ูŽู‘ุฐููŠ ูŠูุณูŽุจูู‘ุญู ุงู„ุฑูŽู‘ุนู’ุฏู ุจูุญูŽู…ู’ุฏูู‡ู ูˆูŽุงู„ู’ู…ูŽู„ูŽุงุฆููƒูŽุฉู ู…ูู†ู’ ุฎููŠููŽุชูู‡ู

Subhana alladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatihi.

"Glory be to He Whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and so do the angels out of awe of Him." โ€” (Muwatta 1808; based on Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:13)

The Story Behind It

The Quran itself speaks about lightning in a way that stops you from seeing it as ordinary:

ูˆูŽู…ูู†ู’ ุขูŠูŽุงุชูู‡ู ูŠูุฑููŠูƒูู…ู ุงู„ู’ุจูŽุฑู’ู‚ูŽ ุฎูŽูˆู’ูู‹ุง ูˆูŽุทูŽู…ูŽุนู‹ุง

"And among His signs, He shows you lightning, [causing] fear and aspiration." โ€” (Surah Ar-Rum, 30:24)

Fear: lightning can kill. Aspiration: the same lightning brings rain, which brings life and provision. One phenomenon โ€” two truths. That is the sign.

The early companions would become noticeably affected by thunder and lightning. Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) would stop speaking whenever he heard thunder and repeat the dhikr of the thunder until the storm passed. When asked about it, he explained that the Quran itself describes the thunder as glorifying Allah โ€” so how could a believer hear it and not join in?

The dua for lightning is an acknowledgment of something the nafs resists: that Allah's power is not abstract. It is real, present, and visible. The same hand that sustains your life could withdraw that sustenance. Saying this dua is not pessimism โ€” it is realism combined with trust. You acknowledge the power and ask for mercy before it.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

Lightning is an irregular trigger โ€” you cannot schedule it. But that irregularity is precisely what makes this practice valuable. Here is how to make it habitual:

  • Memorize both duas now. The lightning dua is three short phrases. The thunder glorification is one. Spend ten minutes today, and you will have both for life. Write them in your phone notes for reference during learning.

  • Link awareness to response. The challenge with irregular triggers is that awareness fades between storms. The solution is to occasionally review the duas during dry spells โ€” so when lightning comes, the response is already loaded.

  • Share it with your household. When a storm comes, saying the dua together reinforces the habit for everyone. Children who see their parents pause and make dua during a storm internalize a profound lesson: Allah is present in every moment of power and beauty.

  • Extend the practice to all weather. Islam has duas for rain, for wind, for drought. When you build the habit of making dua at weather events, each one becomes an opportunity. See dua for rain to complete your weather-related supplication routine.

  • Use storms for extra dua. The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged extra supplication during rain. When the drops fall, spread your hands and ask for whatever you need most โ€” it is a time when duas are heard.

Dua for thunder:

As mentioned above, the companions would say the glorification of Allah when hearing thunder. This fulfills the Quranic description that thunder itself glorifies Allah (Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:13), and joining in is a way of harmonizing with creation's constant worship.

Dua for rain:

When you see rain starting to fall, say: Allahumma sayyiban nafi'a โ€” O Allah, make it a beneficial rain. See dua for rain for the complete practice.

Morning and evening protection:

Build comprehensive daily protection into your routine with dua for morning and dua for evening โ€” the adhkar that the Prophet (peace be upon him) never skipped.

Dua for protection:

For a complete shield of supplication, see dua for protection, which covers the comprehensive protective duas of the Sunnah.

Common Questions

Is the lightning dua from the Prophet directly, or from companions?

The specific wording of Allahumma la taqtulna is reported through companions and is graded as hasan (good). The practice of making dua during storms is confirmed by multiple narrations. Scholars consider it an established Sunnah practice.

What if I am asleep when the storm starts?

If you wake up to a storm, say the duas as you become aware. You do not need to have seen the first flash โ€” the practice applies throughout the storm.

Can I make additional personal duas during a storm?

Absolutely. The Prophet (peace be upon him) indicated that rain time is a time when duas are accepted. Use the storm as an opportunity to ask for whatever you are carrying โ€” forgiveness, healing, provision, guidance. See dua for ease for relevant supplications.

Does this mean I should not take shelter from lightning?

Taking practical precautions is part of tawakkul in Islam. Stay indoors during electrical storms, avoid open fields, and follow safety guidance โ€” then make your dua. Trusting Allah does not mean ignoring the physical laws He created.

Storms Are Signs

The Quran says lightning brings both fear and aspiration. That is a precise description of the spiritual state this dua cultivates. You acknowledge the power โ€” la taqtulna bighadhabika โ€” and in the same breath, you ask for His mercy โ€” wa 'afina qabla dhalik.

The storm passes. Life continues. But the believer who said the dua walked through that storm differently than everyone else around them.

They walked through it with Allah.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua when you see lightning in Islam?

The dua when seeing lightning is: Allahumma la taqtulna bighadhabika, wa la tuhlikna bi'adhabika, wa 'afina qabla dhalik โ€” O Allah, do not kill us with Your anger, do not destroy us with Your punishment, and pardon us before that (Tirmidhi 3450). This was reported from the companions and is considered an authentic supplication for times of lightning and storms.

Is there a dua specifically for thunder in Islam?

Yes. When hearing thunder, the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say: Subhana alladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatihi โ€” Glory be to He Whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and so do the angels out of awe of Him (Muwatta 1808). This is the dua for thunder, while the lightning dua is a separate supplication seeking protection.

Why does Islam have duas for natural phenomena like lightning?

Islamic tradition teaches that natural phenomena are signs (ayat) of Allah. Lightning, thunder, rain, and storms are all manifestations of His power. Having duas for these moments transforms potentially frightening events into opportunities for remembrance and connection with Allah. It is a practical expression of tawakkul โ€” trusting Allah in all conditions.

Should I be afraid of lightning as a Muslim?

Islam encourages healthy awareness without excessive fear. The dua for lightning acknowledges that these are signs of Allah's power and asks for His protection. Taking practical precautions โ€” staying indoors, avoiding exposed areas โ€” is wise. But paralyzing fear is replaced by the remembrance of Allah, which brings tranquility: 'Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest' (Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13:28).

What should I do during a storm Islamically?

Say the duas for lightning and thunder, make extra dua for protection and mercy (storms can bring both), use the moment to reflect on Allah's power, and if rain comes, say the dua for rain. Storms are a time when duas are especially encouraged โ€” the sound of rain and the power of the storm naturally incline the heart toward Allah.
