بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A vast deep ocean at night with a single beam of light descending from the surface, evoking the darkness and the divine answer to the dua of Yunus

There is a darkness that is hard to imagine: the darkness of being inside a living creature, beneath the surface of the sea, at night.

No light. No sound except your own heartbeat. No possibility of escape through any human means. Completely alone, completely helpless, with no path forward except one.

This is where Prophet Yunus ﷺ made the dua that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would later call the supplication that Allah never refuses.

Most of us will never be in a whale. But we know other kinds of darkness: situations that feel completely inescapable. Circumstances that have closed off every exit. Moments where no human being can help and no plan has worked. The dua of Yunus was made for exactly those moments — and the Prophet ﷺ said it works.

The Dua of Prophet Yunus

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina az-zalimin.

"There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." — (Quran 21:87)

The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim makes this supplication in any matter except that Allah responds to it." (Tirmidhi 3505)

In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ described it as the supplication of his brother Yunus: "Should I not teach you the words that Yunus used to say? Whoever says them in any matter, Allah will answer him as He answered Yunus." (Ahmad 1462)

These thirty-one Arabic letters contain three separate acts of worship compressed into a single breath:

TawhidLa ilaha illa anta: There is no god except You. This is the foundation of Islam. In the moment of complete darkness, Yunus began by declaring who Allah is, not by describing his own suffering.

TasbeehSubhanaka: You are transcendent. You are free from any deficiency. This word acknowledges that whatever is happening, it is not a mistake. Allah's plan is perfect. His management of this situation is beyond any human understanding.

TawbahInni kuntu mina az-zalimin: I have been of the wrongdoers. Not: I was wronged. Not: this is not fair. Yunus looked inward and acknowledged his own mistake before asking for rescue. This acknowledgment of fault — without excuse, without self-pity — is what completed the submission.

The Story Behind It

Yunus ﷺ was sent to the people of Nineveh (in modern-day Iraq). He called them to tawhid and they rejected him. Feeling the weight of their rejection and — according to the tafsir scholars — believing the punishment of Allah was coming, he left the city without divine permission. (Quran 21:87)

He boarded a ship. A violent storm struck. By the practice of that time, lots were cast to determine who would be thrown overboard to lighten the ship. The lot fell on Yunus three times. He was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a whale.

The Quran says that if he had not been among those who glorified Allah (musabbihin), he would have remained in the whale's belly until the Day of Resurrection. (Quran 37:143-144). His history of worship was what gave his dua its foundation.

The whale carried him in the darkness and he called out: La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina az-zalimin.

Allah responded. The whale cast him onto shore. He was ill, exhausted, stripped of strength. A gourd plant grew to give him shade. And then he returned to his people — one hundred thousand of them — and they believed. (Quran 37:147-148)

The Prophet ﷺ referred to Yunus as "my brother Yunus" — not to minimize what happened, but to situate it in the lineage of prophets who experienced what felt like complete failure and were restored by Allah.

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Practice

The dua of Yunus is not only for emergencies. Its power is available every day.

Use it as your dua for any difficulty. The Prophet ﷺ said in any matter — this is comprehensive. Health problems, relationship breakdowns, financial pressure, spiritual darkness, emotional suffering, feeling stuck — this dua applies to all of it. You do not need to be inside a whale for it to be appropriate.

Say it with the correct inner state. The power of this dua is inseparable from its three elements: tawhid, tasbeeh, and tawbah. When you say it, mean each part. Say La ilaha illa anta and recognize that Allah is the only one who can solve what you are facing. Say subhanaka and acknowledge His perfection even in this situation. Say inni kuntu mina az-zalimin and look honestly at your own contribution to the difficulty.

Make it a habit in your morning practice. Saying this dua in morning adhkar — before the day brings its difficulties — means you are already in the state of submission before you need it. You are not scrambling to find the right words in a crisis. The words are already part of your daily vocabulary.

Combine it with the dua for ease. The dua for easeAllahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan — complements the dua of Yunus. Yunus's dua is the act of complete submission; the dua for ease is the specific request for the situation to open up. Use them together.

Be patient with the response. The whale did not immediately spit Yunus out. He was in the darkness for a period. The response came, and it came completely. Allah's response to sincere dua is certain — the timing and the form are in His hands.

Dua for hardship: The dua for hardship covers the Prophet's specific supplication Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan — a natural companion to the dua of Yunus for difficult situations.

Dua for forgiveness: Yunus's acknowledgment of his own wrongdoing was central to his dua being answered. The dua for forgiveness covers the Prophet's most powerful supplications for seeking Allah's pardon.

Dua for protection: For spiritual and physical danger, the dua for protection covers the supplications the Prophet ﷺ used for shielding from harm — a complement to the dua of Yunus in situations of threat.

Common Questions

What if I have said the dua of Yunus many times and the situation has not changed?

The Prophet ﷺ said Allah answers the dua — but the answer takes one of three forms: the specific thing you asked for, a harm being removed that you were not aware of, or a reward stored for the Day of Judgment. (Ahmad 10749). Not seeing your specific request fulfilled is not evidence that the dua was rejected. Keep saying it. The response is guaranteed — the form and timing are Allah's.

Do I need to be in a state of wudu to say the dua of Yunus?

No. Dua does not require wudu, though purity of body and heart create a more connected state. The dua of Yunus was made in conditions that did not permit wudu. The prerequisite is sincerity, not physical purity.

Can I say this dua for others who are suffering?

Yes. Making the dua on behalf of someone else — especially someone in severe difficulty — is an act of deep love. Say it for them: La ilaha illa anta subhanaka, innahu/innaha kuntu mina az-zalimin (adjusting the pronoun). You can also simply make general dua that Allah answer them as He answered Yunus.

Closing

Yunus ﷺ was in the darkest place imaginable. No human could help him. No plan would work. And in that complete darkness, with full acknowledgment of his own fault, he turned entirely to Allah.

Allah answered.

The Prophet ﷺ did not tell us this story as history. He told us this dua is available to every Muslim in any matter. The access point is not perfection — it is that three-part act of submission: tawhid, tasbeeh, tawbah.

Wherever you are in whatever darkness, this dua is yours to make.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua of Prophet Yunus?

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu mina az-zalimin — There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers. (Quran 21:87). The Prophet ﷺ said no Muslim makes this dua in any matter except that Allah responds to it. (Tirmidhi 3505)

Why is the dua of Yunus so powerful?

The dua of Yunus combines three elements that are the essence of submission: tawhid (La ilaha illa anta — acknowledging Allah alone), tasbeeh (Subhanaka — declaring His perfection and transcendence), and tawbah (inni kuntu mina az-zalimin — acknowledging your own wrongdoing without excusing it). Together these three constitute complete surrender, which is why the dua carries such power.

How many times should I say the dua of Yunus?

There is no prescribed number of repetitions in the authentic narrations. The key is sincerity, not quantity. The Prophet ﷺ described it as a dua that is answered — meaning it should be said with full presence and genuine intention. Many scholars recommend repeating it 40 times or more in one sitting based on some narrations, though the primary evidence simply emphasizes sincerity.

Can I say the dua of Yunus for any situation?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No Muslim makes this supplication in any matter' — the word 'any' is unrestricted. Whether you are in physical danger, emotional distress, spiritual darkness, financial difficulty, or any other situation, this dua is appropriate. It is not limited to situations like Prophet Yunus's — it is for any moment when you need Allah to respond.

What is the story of Prophet Yunus in the whale?

Yunus ﷺ left his people without divine permission after they rejected his message. He boarded a ship, was thrown overboard in a storm by lot, and was swallowed by a whale. In complete darkness — the darkness of the night, the sea, and the whale's belly — he called out this dua. Allah responded, commanded the whale to cast him onto shore, and he returned to his people, who then believed. (Quran 21:87-88, 37:139-148)
