In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A simple pre-dawn table with dates and water, soft warm light, the stillness of the early morning before Fajr

It is 3:30 in the morning. The house is quiet. Everyone else is still asleep, and you are sitting at the table with a glass of water and a few dates, trying to keep your eyes open long enough to eat before Fajr.

It does not feel like worship. It feels like logistics.

But the Prophet (peace be upon him) called suhoor a blessed meal. He woke for it. He encouraged his Companions not to skip it even if all they had was a sip of water. He said the difference between a Muslim's fast and the fast of other communities was this one pre-dawn meal. That context changes everything. Suhoor is not just eating before the long day โ€” it is a small, quiet act of following the Prophet's example, done at a time when most of the world is asleep.

The Dua for Suhoor

Before eating โ€” Bismillah

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

Bismillah.

"In the name of Allah." โ€” (Bukhari 5376, Muslim 2017)

Say this before every suhoor meal โ€” before the first bite, not mid-meal. If you forget and remember during the meal, say:

ุจูุณู’ู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุฃูŽูˆูŽู‘ู„ูŽู‡ู ูˆูŽุขุฎูุฑูŽู‡ู

Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirah.

"In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end." โ€” (Abu Dawud 3767)

The niyyah (intention) for fasting

Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan.

"I intend to fast tomorrow for the month of Ramadan." โ€” (Abu Dawud, narrated via fiqh scholars; commonly cited from Fath al-Bari)

Say this dua for suhoor after eating, or at any point before Fajr. It formalizes the intention that was already in your heart.

After eating โ€” Alhamdulillah

"Praise be to Allah who fed me this and provided it for me, without any power or strength on my part." โ€” (Abu Dawud 4023, Tirmidhi 3458)

The Story Behind Suhoor

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Take the suhoor meal, for there is blessing (barakah) in it." (Bukhari 1923)

He also said: "The difference between our fast and the fast of the People of the Book is the eating of the pre-dawn meal." (Muslim 1096)

These were not casual remarks. They were deliberate teachings. The Prophet wanted Muslims to understand that suhoor is an act of worship โ€” not just a practical preparation for the day ahead.

There is something deeper here too. Rising before Fajr places you at a special time. The Prophet called the last third of the night the time when Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks: "Who is calling upon Me, that I may answer? Who is asking of Me, that I may give? Who is seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive?" (Bukhari 1145)

Suhoor puts you awake at exactly this time. That is not a coincidence. The blessing of suhoor extends beyond the food itself โ€” it includes the du'a, the dhikr, and the proximity to Allah that come with being awake before dawn.

How to Make the Dua for Suhoor Part of Your Daily Routine

Most of us eat suhoor half-asleep, scrolling a phone, counting down the minutes to Fajr. And then suhoor ends, and we feel like we just survived it rather than benefited from it.

There is a better way. It starts with treating suhoor not as a sleep interruption but as a short, intentional window.

Set a suhoor alarm that gives you 20 extra minutes

The habit most people struggle with is rushing. They wake up at the last possible minute, eat quickly, and feel no spiritual benefit. Move your alarm back by 20 minutes. Use the extra time before Fajr for the duas above and for whatever dhikr or Quran feels natural.

Stack the intention dua onto eating

The niyyah dua is easiest to remember when you anchor it to a fixed moment โ€” the moment you finish eating. As soon as you put down your cup or plate after suhoor, say the niyyah. Do not wait until after Fajr. This makes the intention deliberate and timely.

Use the Bismillah as a reset

Say Bismillah slowly before your first bite. Not rushed. This one word, said with presence, turns the meal from eating into worship. It is the same principle as beginning any act with the name of Allah โ€” it changes the frame of what you are doing.

Build toward the last third of the night

If your suhoor consistently happens 30-40 minutes before Fajr, you are naturally awake in the last third of the night. Consider praying two rakah of Tahajjud before Fajr. One of the most powerful habits you can build in Ramadan โ€” and outside of it โ€” is turning suhoor from a feeding stop into a mini prayer and du'a session before the day begins.

Track your streak

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are small." (Bukhari 6464) Every morning you wake for suhoor and begin with Bismillah is a small act of consistency. Track it. Seeing 10, 20, 30 days of suhoor done intentionally builds a different relationship with fasting.

Common Questions

Can I make the niyyah for fasting the night before?

Yes. The Hanbali and Maliki schools hold that for obligatory fasts like Ramadan, the niyyah must be made before Fajr โ€” meaning the night before counts. The Shafi'i and Hanafi positions align with this as well. Saying the niyyah dua at suhoor is excellent practice, but if you forget, your fast is still valid if you intended to fast when you went to sleep.

Suhoor is sunnah โ€” strongly recommended but not obligatory. Your fast is valid without it. However, the Prophet was consistent about it and explicitly encouraged it, calling it a blessed meal and linking it to the identity of Muslim fasting. To leave it without reason is to miss a sunnah the Prophet regularly kept.

What is the best food for suhoor?

The Prophet mentioned dates as a good suhoor food. Beyond that, scholars and nutritionists both point toward slow-digesting foods โ€” oats, eggs, whole grains โ€” that sustain energy through the day. The spiritual point, however, is less about optimal nutrition and more about waking up with intention and saying the duas. Even a glass of water with Bismillah counts.

What should I do in the time between suhoor and Fajr?

This is one of the most valuable slots in the day. Options: pray Tahajjud or Witr if you have not yet; make personal du'a; recite Quran; say Istighfar. The last third of the night is the time when Allah's nearness is described in hadith as most accessible. Do not spend it on your phone.

Can non-fasting family members eat suhoor with me?

Of course. The blessing of the meal and the barakah of the hour are not exclusive to those fasting. Eating together at suhoor is an act of family connection and sunnah revival. Encourage your household to at least wake and sit together, even if not everyone is fasting.

Closing

Suhoor is one of those underrated acts that separates a Ramadan that transforms from one that merely passes. Most people never try to make it spiritual โ€” they survive it. But you can do something different.

Wake with enough time. Say Bismillah before you eat. Make your niyyah before Fajr. Ask Allah for something specific in the last third of the night, when the door is wide open. Then pray Fajr and begin your day.

That 20-minute window before dawn, done consistently, is one of the most impactful habits in this deen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific dua for suhoor?

There is no single dua specifically labeled for suhoor in the hadith, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to say Bismillah before eating and Alhamdulillah after. The dua for beginning the fast โ€” Wa bisawmi ghadin nawaitu min shahri Ramadan โ€” is also authentically narrated and commonly said at suhoor time to make a formal niyyah.

Do you have to make niyyah (intention) out loud for fasting?

No, niyyah does not have to be spoken aloud. It is an intention of the heart. Saying the niyyah dua out loud is permitted and many scholars recommend it to affirm the intention, but the fast is valid with an internal intention alone. What matters is that before Fajr, you have genuinely intended to fast.

What if I sleep through suhoor โ€” is my fast still valid?

Yes, your fast is valid. Suhoor is sunnah and strongly recommended, but it is not an obligation. If you slept through suhoor, you can still fast. Make your intention when you wake up โ€” as long as you have not eaten anything after Fajr, your fast is sound.

When does the suhoor window close?

The suhoor window closes at Fajr โ€” the true dawn (subh sadiq), not astronomical twilight. Once the Fajr adhan is called, eating and drinking must stop. Many Muslims use a prayer time app to know the exact Fajr time for their location. Eating a few minutes before the adhan is fine; eating after it invalidates the fast.

What is the sunnah of suhoor?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Take the suhoor meal, for there is blessing in it. (Bukhari 1923). He also said the difference between our fast and the fast of the People of the Book is the suhoor meal (Muslim 1096). Sunnah practice: wake early, eat lightly, make niyyah, make dua, and use the time before Fajr for dhikr or two rakah of tahajjud if possible.
