In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Completing the Quran is not a finish line. It is a door.
When you reach the last ayah of Surah An-Nas, you have not reached the end of something โ you have arrived at a threshold the Companions of the Prophet treated as one of the most powerful moments for accepted dua. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would gather his family at the completion of the Quran to make dua together. The gathering itself was the point.
The khatam dua is the act of pausing at that threshold โ acknowledging what you have just completed, giving thanks, and asking Allah for what matters most while you are in a state of closeness that the Quran itself has opened.
The Duas
The core dua of the Khatam โ from the Sunnah of the Prophet:
Anas ibn Malik reported: "When the Prophet (peace be upon him) completed the Quran, he would gather his family and make supplication." The specific words varied, but the scholars preserved the following duas as those most fitting for this moment:
ุฑูุจููููุง ุขุชูููุง ููู ุงูุฏููููููุง ุญูุณูููุฉู ููููู ุงููุขุฎูุฑูุฉู ุญูุณูููุฉู ููููููุง ุนูุฐูุงุจู ุงููููุงุฑู
Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanatan wa fil akhirati hasanatan wa qina adhaban nar.
"Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the punishment of the Fire." โ (Quran 2:201; Bukhari 4522 โ the Prophet recited this dua most frequently)
The dua asking for the Quran to fill the heart:
ุงููููููู ูู ุงุฌูุนููู ุงููููุฑูุขูู ุฑูุจููุนู ููููุจููุ ูููููุฑู ุตูุฏูุฑููุ ููุฌูููุงุกู ุญูุฒููููุ ููุฐูููุงุจู ููู ููู
Allahumma ij'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi wa nura sadri wa jala'a huzni wa dhahaba hammi.
"O Allah, make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the departure of my sadness, and the relief of my anxiety." โ (Ahmad 3712; graded sahih)
The khatam dua from the athar of Anas ibn Malik:
Imam Ahmad recorded that Anas would say upon completing the Quran:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ููุฏู ุฃูุชูููุชููู ุจูููุชูุงุจููู ููููููุงู ูููุ ููุงุฌูุนูููููู ู ููู ุงูููุฐูููู ุขู ููููุง ุจููู
Allahumma inni qad ataytuka bi-kitabika wa kalamik, faj'alni minal ladhina amanu bih.
"O Allah, I have come to You with Your Book and Your speech โ make me of those who believed in it."
This was the spirit of the khatam gathering: arriving at Allah's presence through His own words and asking to be counted among those who truly received them.
The Story Behind It
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal โ one of the great Imams of Islamic jurisprudence โ is recorded as having recommended gathering specifically to make dua at khatam. He was asked about it and replied: "I see nothing wrong with it." His students reported that he himself would send for family members when he completed the Quran, specifically for the dua moment.
The Companion Anas ibn Malik would complete the Quran and then wait โ not rush through the ending, not close the Mushaf quickly. He would call whoever was nearby. His understanding was that the barakah of that moment was too significant to let pass without drawing others into it.
Ibn al-Qayyim described the Quran as the spring of the heart โ the image used in the dua above. He wrote that when the Quran flows through a person consistently, their heart takes on the qualities of a field in spring: alive, receptive, growing. The khatam is when that season is most fully present. Marking it with dua is not ceremony. It is spiritual stewardship.
How to Make the Khatam Dua Part of Your Life
Most Muslims who complete the Quran feel something real in that final moment โ and then move on. The phone gets picked up, the day continues, and the experience that could have been a turning point becomes a memory.
Create a khatam ritual:
Before you recite the last page of Surah An-Nas, slow down. Read it deliberately. When you finish the final ayah, stay where you are. Put down any device. Take thirty seconds of silence before you begin the dua. This pause is not dead time โ it is transition time, moving you from reader to supplicant.
Use the duas in order:
Start with the personal Quran dua โ Allahumma ij'al al-Qur'ana rabi'a qalbi โ because it is asking Allah to let what you just completed actually enter you. Then move to Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanatan โ the dua the Prophet said most frequently, and the most all-encompassing petition a person can make. End with your own words: what is on your heart right now, what you are carrying, who you want to ask for.
Make a list before the khatam:
In the days before you finish, write down what you want to ask for at the completion. This is not manipulation โ it is preparation. You are thinking about what matters most while your heart is already being softened by daily Quran recitation. By the time you reach the last surah, the list is ready and the dua becomes focused rather than scattered.
Invite someone to share it:
The prophetic model was gathering. It does not need to be many people โ one person is enough. Call your spouse, a parent, a sibling. Tell them you are completing the Quran tonight and ask them to join for a few minutes of dua afterward. This small act transforms a private achievement into a communal act of worship.
Set a target for your next khatam:
At the khatam itself, make the intention for your next completion. Write the date. Make it achievable โ if this khatam took six months, target five. If it took three months, target two. Building a rhythm of Quran completion is one of the most powerful structures a Muslim can give their spiritual life.

Common Questions
Is there a specific dua text that is authentically narrated for khatam?
There is no single hadith with a fixed dua text specifically for khatam prescribed by the Prophet. What is authentically established is: (1) the Prophet gathered family for dua at khatam (Anas ibn Malik's report), (2) the Companions treated this moment as highly significant for accepted dua, and (3) scholars recommend using established Quranic and Prophetic duas rather than invented formulas. The duas above โ particularly Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanatan โ are sahih and fitting for this moment.
Should I complete the Quran during Salah or in private recitation?
Both count as khatam, but the tradition of gathering for khatam dua applies most naturally to private or group recitation outside salah. In Ramadan, many mosques hold a special tarawih session for the khatam of the Quran โ this is a valid and beloved practice. The key is to mark the completion with dua regardless of the context.
How long should the khatam dua be?
There is no prescribed length. Anas ibn Malik's gatherings were described simply as making dua โ not elaborating the duration. A focused, sincere five-minute dua is more valuable than a distracted thirty-minute one. Start with the duas above โ about two minutes of recitation โ and then add personal supplication for as long as feels genuine.
What if I complete the Quran alone and have no one to gather with?
Make the dua alone. The ideal is gathering, but the dua itself is not conditional on having other people present. Make your intention to eventually share it โ perhaps complete the next one with a family member or a friend. For now, your sincerity before Allah alone is fully sufficient.
Closing
You worked through 114 surahs. You sat with words that Allah preserved across fourteen centuries to reach you specifically, in your language, at this point in your life.
The khatam dua is how you close that loop โ not by moving on, but by standing at the end of the Quran and saying: I want this to be more than reading. I want it to enter me. I want it to change what I love and what I fear and what I ask for.
Say the duas. Gather who you can. Make the intention to begin again.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for khatam ul Quran?
There is no single hadith prescribing one specific dua text for khatam, but Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet completed the Quran, he would gather his family and make a long supplication. The Companions understood khatam as a moment of major accepted dua, and scholars recommend using the Quranic duas taught throughout the Quran itself โ particularly Rabbana atina fid dunya hasanah (2:201) and the dua of the prophets.
Is there a specific time to make dua at khatam?
According to scholars including Imam Ahmad, the preferred time for dua at khatam is immediately after reciting the last ayah of Surah An-Nas, before closing the Mushaf. This is the moment the Companions used. The entire gathering was treated as a moment of barakah and accepted dua.
Is the khatam dua bidah?
Making dua at the completion of the Quran is authentically reported from the Companions and early Muslims, and is not bidah. What matters is using authentic duas โ ideally from the Quran and Sunnah โ rather than invented formulas. Imam Ahmad explicitly approved of gathering for dua at khatam.
How often should I complete the Quran?
The Prophet disapproved of completing the Quran in less than three days, as it does not allow for proper reflection. The Companions varied โ some completed it weekly, others monthly. The scholars recommend once per month as a sustainable minimum for most Muslims, with more frequent completions during Ramadan.
What if I can't complete the whole Quran โ can I still make khatam dua?
Some scholars extend the spirit of khatam dua to the completion of any significant portion of the Quran โ a juz, a surah set, or a study of a complete topic. The key principle is that completing the Quran โ or a meaningful portion of it โ is a moment of gratitude and renewed intention. Make dua sincerely at whatever milestone matters to you.
