In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A silhouette of a person standing on a hilltop at dawn, hands raised in supplication toward the horizon, soft golden and cream tones, mosque outline in the distance

Every single salah. Five times a day. Before you finish your prayer and say salaam โ€” there is a moment the Prophet (peace be upon him) never skipped.

He would seek refuge from four things: the punishment of the grave, the punishment of Hellfire, the trials of life and death, and the fitna of the Dajjal.

Every. Single. Prayer. Without exception.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not teach this dua as something to say occasionally when you think about end times. He commanded his companions to say it in every prayer. Which means if you have been praying without it, you have been leaving your salah without a shield the Prophet considered non-negotiable.

This is not meant to make you feel bad. It is meant to make you feel the urgency of adding it โ€” starting today.

The Dua for Protection from Dajjal

After the final tashahhud, before tasleem, say:

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa min 'adhabi jahannam, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of Hellfire, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Dajjal." โ€” (Bukhari 1377; Muslim 588)

When to say it: In every salah, in the final tashahhud, after the salutation upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and before finishing with tasleem.

Additionally: recite the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf every Friday as a weekly reinforcement.

The Story Behind It

Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When any one of you finishes the last tashahhud, let him seek refuge in Allah from four things..."

He then taught this exact dua. The companions memorized it. They taught it to their children. For fourteen centuries, Muslims have carried this supplication into every prayer.

Why Dajjal specifically? Because the Dajjal represents the supreme trial โ€” a being so convincing that the Prophet warned even believers might be at risk. His trial is one of confusion: he will show falsehood as truth, present himself as divine, and offer material pleasures as proof of his power.

The fitna of Dajjal is not just a future event. It is a type of trial โ€” the trial of being deceived by what looks good, what the nafs wants, what the world presents as success. Every generation faces a version of this.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said:

"There will be no creation from the time of Adam to the Hour greater in trial than the Dajjal." โ€” (Muslim 2946)

And separately, he commanded:

"Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal." โ€” (Muslim 809)

How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life

The dua has a perfect built-in trigger: the final tashahhud of every prayer. You already sit in that position. You already recite that portion of salah. All you need to do is add this dua before you turn right and say salaam.

Step 1: Learn the Arabic in pieces. Break it into four sections, one per day:

  1. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr
  2. wa min 'adhabi jahannam
  3. wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat
  4. wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal

Step 2: Print it and place it where you pray. During the learning phase, having the text visible removes the barrier of forgetting. Within a week, it will be memorized.

Step 3: Add Surah Al-Kahf to your Friday routine. Even ten verses โ€” the first ten โ€” fulfill the Sunnah of protection. Build this into your Jummah preparation.

Step 4: Understand what you are saying. Each of the four things in the dua represents a real category of danger. Knowing what you are seeking refuge from transforms the words from sounds into shields.

Step 5: Track your consistency. Did you say this dua in all five prayers today? A simple daily check โ€” even a mental one โ€” builds accountability. Missing it starts to feel like leaving the house without your keys.

Dua for steadfastness:

The greatest protection from any fitna is a firm heart. See dua for steadfastness for the supplication that asks Allah to keep your heart fixed on the truth.

Common Questions

Is this dua obligatory in every prayer?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded it, and scholars consider it strongly recommended (mustahabb) in every salah. Some scholars hold it as wajib (obligatory) based on the direct command. At minimum, making it a consistent practice fulfills the clear Sunnah.

I have been praying without this dua for years. What do I do?

You start today. There is no need for regret โ€” the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If you have repented from a sin, it is as though you never committed it" (Ibn Majah 4250). Add the dua to every prayer from this moment forward.

What if my Arabic is weak and I cannot memorize it?

Work through it phrase by phrase. Say it slowly in Arabic even if imperfectly โ€” Allah knows your effort and your heart. Simultaneously, make the dua in your own language until the Arabic becomes comfortable. The sincere effort counts.

How does Surah Al-Kahf protect against Dajjal?

The surah tells four stories: the people of the cave (faith vs. persecution), the owner of two gardens (wealth vs. gratitude), Musa and al-Khidr (knowledge and humility), and Dhul-Qarnayn (power and justice). Dajjal's fitna attacks precisely these areas. Reciting the surah internalizes the counter-narrative to every deception he will use.

The Shield Is Already in Your Hands

Every Muslim who prays has an opportunity to say this dua fifteen times a day โ€” five prayers, three times each in the sittings of salah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) considered it important enough to make part of the most sacred act of worship.

Dajjal represents the ultimate test of whether your heart recognizes truth from falsehood. The preparation is this dua โ€” said consistently, understood deeply, lived sincerely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dua for protection from Dajjal?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught seeking refuge in Allah from four things after the final tashahhud in every prayer, including from the fitna of Dajjal: Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min adhabil-qabr, wa min adhabi-jahannam, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal (Bukhari 1377, Muslim 588). Additionally, memorizing the first and last ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf provides protection from Dajjal.

When should you say the dua for protection from Dajjal?

The primary dua is said in every prayer during the final tashahhud, after sending salutations on the Prophet, before the tasleem. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded his companions to memorize it and say it in every salah (Muslim 588). Additionally, reading Surah Al-Kahf every Friday provides weekly reinforcement of this protection.

Why is Surah Al-Kahf protection from Dajjal?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from Dajjal' (Muslim 809). Scholars note that the surah deals with four stories โ€” trials of faith, wealth, knowledge, and power โ€” precisely the four trials Dajjal will use. The surah is a spiritual inoculation against these temptations.

Do I need to believe Dajjal is coming soon to say this dua?

No. Seeking protection from Dajjal is Sunnah regardless of when you believe his arrival to be. The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded it for every Muslim in every generation. Even beyond the literal Dajjal, the dua protects from all forms of fitna โ€” trials, confusion, and corruption โ€” which exist in every era.

What are the four things the Prophet sought refuge from in this dua?

The four are: the punishment of the grave, the punishment of Hellfire, the fitna of life and death, and the fitna of Dajjal. Together they represent the major spiritual dangers a believer faces โ€” in this life, at death, in the grave, and at the end of times.
