In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You get something new to wear and you feel good. It fits well. It looks right. There is something genuinely pleasant about wearing new clothes โ fresh fabric, a small lift in mood, a sense of being put together. Islam acknowledges that entirely. What Islam adds is the question: in that moment of pleasure, do you remember Who gave it to you?
The dua for new clothes is one of the small Sunnah practices that transforms an ordinary moment of consumer pleasure into an act of gratitude and worship. It takes ten seconds. And it changes the experience of wearing new clothes from a self-focused moment into a God-conscious one.
The Dua
Allahumma lakal-hamdu Anta kasawtanihi as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lahu wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.
"O Allah, to You is all praise. You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for." โ (Sunan Abu Dawud 4020)
When to say it: When you put on new clothing for the first time.
What to say to someone else wearing new clothes:
ุงููุจูุณู ุฌูุฏููุฏูุง ููุนูุดู ุญูู ููุฏูุง ููู ูุชู ุดููููุฏูุง
Ilbas jadidan wa'ish hamidan wa mut shahidan.
"Wear it new, live praised, and die as a martyr." โ (Ibn Majah 3558)
This is both a dua and a greeting โ it turns the congratulation for new clothing into a supplication for the person's entire life: their clothing today, their character throughout life, and their end.
The Story Behind It
The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared deeply about the meaning behind clothing. When he received a new garment, he would make dua. When he saw companions in new clothing, he would make dua for them.
One narration records that a companion came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) wearing a new garment, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "Wear it new, live praised, and die as a martyr." The companion replied that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had given him three gifts with those words โ the blessing for the clothing, the prayer for his life, and the supplication for his death (Ibn Majah 3558).
The companion understood what so many of us miss: a few sincere words can carry enormous weight when they come from a place of genuine dua. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not simply say "nice outfit" and move on. He turned the moment into a complete supplication for the person's wellbeing in this life and the next.
There is also a deeper instruction embedded in the dua for new clothes: "I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for." Clothing can become a vehicle for arrogance (kibr), for showing off (riya), for comparison and envy, for wasteful spending. The dua explicitly acknowledges this possibility and asks Allah for protection against it. Every time you wear something new with this dua, you are setting an intention: this is not about pride, it is about gratitude.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
The dua for new clothes is one of the easier Sunnah habits to build because it has a very clear trigger: the moment you put on something new for the first time.
Create the association: When you tag and unwrap new clothing, that physical action becomes your reminder. Before you wear it for the first time โ whether it is Eid clothes, a new shirt for work, or anything else โ pause and say the dua. The unwrapping is the cue.
Teach it to your family: When a child gets new clothes โ for Eid, for school, for any occasion โ make the dua together before they put on the new garment. This builds the association from childhood. The parent says Allahumma lakal-hamdu and the child repeats it, learning both Arabic and the habit simultaneously.
Pair it with shukr: The dua for new clothes is a specific instance of the broader practice of gratitude (shukr). See what is shukr in Islam to understand how Islam frames gratitude as a complete spiritual practice. Every time you make this dua, you are exercising the muscle of gratitude โ recognizing that clothing, like all provision, comes from Allah.
The anti-arrogance check: Before wearing anything new โ particularly something expensive or impressive โ the dua serves as a spiritual reset. "I seek refuge in You from its evil." The evil of clothing is pride. Saying those words out loud before wearing something beautiful is a built-in check against the nafs that wants to preen and show off.

Common Questions
Is it wrong to enjoy new clothes as a Muslim?
Not at all. The Prophet (peace be upon him) wore beautiful garments on Eid and Jumu'ah. He said: "Allah is beautiful and loves beauty" (Sahih Muslim 91). The distinction is between enjoying a blessing with gratitude versus being consumed by the desire for it. The dua when wearing new clothes is precisely the tool that keeps enjoyment in its proper place.
What if I forget to say the dua when I first put on new clothes?
Say it when you remember. There is no specific timing window that makes the dua invalid โ the intention and sincerity matter more than catching the exact first moment of wearing. If you have been wearing something for a week and just learned this dua, say it now.
Is there a dua to say before donating old clothes?
There is no specific narration for this, but saying Bismillah and making a dua of acceptance โ "O Allah, accept this as sadaqah and benefit the one who receives it" โ is in the spirit of the broader guidance on giving in charity. The act of giving clothing carries its own reward.
Does the dua for new clothes apply to secondhand or gifted clothes?
The dua's spirit applies to any new-to-you clothing. The word "new" in the context refers to wearing something for the first time, not the clothing's manufacturing history. A thoughtful gift of clothing, worn for the first time, merits the same dua of gratitude.
Closing
The dua for new clothes is not a big spiritual act. It is a ten-second pause in a moment of ordinary pleasure. But that pause matters.
It redirects the moment from "look what I have" to "Alhamdulillah for what Allah gave me." It asks for protection from the arrogance that beautiful things can quietly encourage. And it turns the simple act of wearing something new into a small prayer that rises to Allah from the middle of your daily routine.
These are the habits the Prophet (peace be upon him) built his life around โ not grand gestures, but consistent small acts of remembrance woven through every ordinary moment. Make this one yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua when wearing new clothes?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught: 'Allahumma lakal-hamdu Anta kasawtanihi as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lahu wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu' โ O Allah, to You is all praise. You have clothed me with it. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for (Abu Dawud 4020).
Is there a shorter dua for new clothes?
Yes. Some scholars accept saying simply: 'Alhamdulillah' โ All praise is to Allah โ when wearing new clothes, as this acknowledges the blessing. However, the fuller dua is more complete and specifically tied to the act of wearing clothing.
What do you say to someone wearing new clothes in Islam?
When you see someone wearing new clothes, say: 'Ilbas jadidan wa'ish hamidan wa mut shahidan' โ Wear it new, live praised, and die as a martyr. This is the established Sunnah dua of congratulation for new clothing.
Does the dua for new clothes apply to every outfit or only the first time you wear something?
The dua is specifically recommended for wearing new clothing for the first time. Some scholars extend the spirit of it to any act of getting dressed as a morning gratitude practice.
Is it permissible to be happy about new clothes?
Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself received gifts of clothing and was pleased with them. He wore nice clothes on Eid and Jumu'ah. Islam does not prohibit enjoying beautiful clothing โ it prohibits arrogance about it and wastefulness. Being grateful to Allah for clothing while avoiding extravagance is the balanced Islamic approach.
