بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Starting a business is one of the most hopeful and terrifying things a person can do. You are putting your resources, your reputation, and your dreams into something that does not yet exist — betting on a future you cannot fully see.

A Muslim starting a business has something that business books do not teach: the ability to put Allah at the foundation before the first transaction.

This is not just a spiritual nicety. The dua for a new business is a practical act of tawakkul — of acknowledging that your effort is necessary but not sufficient on its own. It positions you correctly from day one: you are the one doing the work, and Allah is the One who gives it barakah.

The Dua

The primary supplication for good provision and blessed work:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ رِزْقاً طَيِّباً وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً

Allahumma inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

"O Allah, I ask You for good and wholesome provision, and deeds that are accepted." — (Ibn Majah 925)

For blessing in one's earnings and work specifically:

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي ثَمَرِنَا وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي مَدِينَتِنَا وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي صَاعِنَا وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي مُدِّنَا

Allahumma barik lana fi thamaratina wa barik lana fi madinatina wa barik lana fi sa'ina wa barik lana fi muddina.

"O Allah, bless us in our fruit, bless us in our city, bless us in our measure and bless us in our container." — (Muslim 1373)

Say the first dua after Fajr prayer when beginning a new venture. The second can become part of your morning adhkar as a general blessing on your livelihood.

The Story Behind It

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was himself a merchant before his prophethood — and an exceptionally honest one. He worked for Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was one of the leading businesspeople of Makkah, and his reputation for honesty earned him the title Al-Amin (The Trustworthy) long before revelation came to him.

This matters. Islam does not treat business as a lesser pursuit than worship. The Quran mentions the marketplace and trade. The Prophet praised the honest merchant and placed him in distinguished company. Commerce, when done with integrity and gratitude, is itself a form of service.

The key phrase in the dua above is rizqan tayyiban — good, wholesome provision. Not just "a lot of money" but provision that is tayyib: pure, permissible, blessed, and not obtained through means that damage your soul or harm others. That distinction is what Islamic entrepreneurship is built on.

How to Make These Duas a Daily Business Habit

Successful businesses require daily discipline. So does a meaningful supplication practice. Here is how to weave the two together.

Start every workday with bismillah. Before you open your laptop, make your first call, or begin any transaction — say Bismillah. This is not ceremonial. It is a declaration of intention: this work begins in Allah's name and is therefore under His account.

Recite the morning adhkar before you start work. The morning adhkar include supplications for protection, blessing, and good provision. Taking ten minutes after Fajr for the morning adhkar before your workday begins creates a spiritual foundation that business decisions are built on. The morning adhkar takes just ten minutes and sets the spiritual tone for every decision that follows.

Make specific dua for your business by name. Do not just say "bless my work" — tell Allah specifically: the name of your business, what it does, who it serves, what challenges you are facing, what you need this month. The Prophet encouraged specificity in dua. Allah knows everything, but the act of articulating your specific need sharpens your own clarity and strengthens the sincerity of the asking.

Give sadaqah from your first earnings. Before you spend the first income from your new venture, give some away. This is a practice many Muslim entrepreneurs follow deliberately. The Quran says: "Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?" (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:245). Starting the cash flow of your business with an act of generosity is a statement about what kind of business you intend to run.

Make istikhara whenever facing major decisions. Not just at the start of the business, but at every significant crossroads — new hires, new products, major investments. Building the habit of consulting Allah through istikhara means you are never navigating the business alone.

Common Questions

What if my business is struggling despite making dua?

Dua is not a guarantee of smooth sailing — it is a relationship with Allah that sustains you through both difficulty and ease. Struggle is part of every entrepreneur's story, including the companions who were merchants. When the business is hard, the dua keeps you grounded: you are asking the One who controls the outcome, and you are continuing to show up. Review your practices for honesty, check whether your dealings have any questionable elements, increase sadaqah, and keep going.

Can I make dua for a specific amount of money?

Yes. The Prophet encouraged asking Allah specifically, including for material needs. There is no shame in asking Allah for a successful month, a specific client, or a particular revenue goal. What matters is that you hold these goals with open hands — grateful if they come, trusting if they do not.

How important is honesty compared to dua in business success?

They work together. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The two parties to a transaction have the right of withdrawal as long as they have not separated; and if they are honest and clarify, they will be blessed in their transaction; and if they conceal and lie, the blessing will be eliminated." (Bukhari 2079). Dishonesty actively removes barakah. Dua without honest dealings is asking for barakah on a cracked foundation.

Closing

You are about to build something. Before you build it on market research, funding, and strategy — build it on this: Allah's name at the foundation, His blessing in the mortar, and your daily return to Him for guidance.

That is not naivety. That is the most practical thing a Muslim entrepreneur can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific dua for starting a new business?

There is no single hadith with a dua specifically labeled 'for new business,' but several authentic supplications are relevant. The dua for barakah in one's work, the morning adhkar for protection and blessing, and the dua 'Allahumma inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' (O Allah, I ask You for good provision and accepted deeds) are all used by Muslims starting new ventures.

How do I ask Allah for success in business?

Ask specifically and honestly. Tell Allah what you are building, why you are building it, and ask for His blessing on it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Allah loves when His servant asks for his needs specifically. Pair this with practical effort — tawakkul means trusting Allah after taking the appropriate steps, not instead of them.

What is the role of barakah in business in Islam?

Barakah — divine blessing and increase — is what makes effort productive beyond its natural output. Two businesses with identical resources can have very different outcomes because of barakah. It is sought through honesty in dealings, beginning with bismillah, giving sadaqah from earnings, and maintaining a consistent relationship with Allah.

Should I pray istikhara before starting a business?

Yes. If you are uncertain about whether or how to proceed, istikhara is exactly what it is for. It does not guarantee a clear dream or sign — it realigns your will with Allah's and asks Him to facilitate what is good. After making istikhara, proceed with the best human judgment available to you and trust the outcome to Allah.

What business practices does Islam recommend for barakah?

Honesty in transactions, avoiding interest-based dealings, giving sadaqah regularly from earnings, beginning each workday with bismillah and morning adhkar, and treating employees and clients with fairness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said the honest and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets and truthful on the Day of Resurrection. (Tirmidhi 1209)
