In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There are moments when the darkness inside feels louder than any reminder you've been given. You've made dua before. You've tried to be consistent. And yet, here you are again โ asking whether things will ever actually change.
That feeling is not a sign that Allah has abandoned you. It is a sign that your nafs is exhausted and needs to be anchored to something bigger than itself. The Prophet ๏ทบ left us a specific supplication for exactly this moment โ a dua that surrenders the burden of self-reliance entirely and places it where it was always meant to go: in the hands of Allah.

Allahumma rahmataka arju fala takilni ila nafsi tarfata 'aynin wa aslih li sha'ni kullahu la ilaha illa ant
"O Allah, Your mercy is what I hope for. Do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye. Set right all my affairs for me. There is no god but You."
โ (Abu Dawud 5090 โ authenticated by Al-Albani)
When to say it: In the morning and evening adhkar. During moments of anxiety, despair, or when you feel your grip on hope weakening. Before any task where you fear failure. At night when sleep won't come because the mind is racing.
The phrase "do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye" is extraordinary. It acknowledges that without Allah's constant support, the human self โ the nafs โ defaults toward weakness, fear, and despair. Hope is not something we generate. It is something we receive.
The Story Behind This Dua
The narrators of hadith recorded that the Prophet ๏ทบ would say this dua regularly, including it among his daily supplications. But the circumstances that make it most alive are the lives of the Companions and prophets who faced genuine hopelessness.
When Prophet Yunus ๏ทบ was in the belly of the whale โ alone, in complete darkness, in what seemed like a situation with no exit โ he made a dua recorded in the Quran: "There is no god but You. Glory be to You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." (Al-Anbiya, 21:87) Allah describes what happened next: "We responded to him and saved him from distress. And thus do We save the believers."
The pattern is consistent throughout prophetic history: the moment of deepest darkness is often the moment closest to relief. Not because suffering guarantees reward, but because genuine turning to Allah โ with full acknowledgment that there is nowhere else to turn โ opens a door that pride and self-sufficiency keeps closed.
Hope in Islam is not wishful thinking. It is an active orientation of the heart toward Allah's mercy, grounded in the certainty that His mercy is vaster than any sin or any difficulty.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
The nafs loses hope gradually, not all at once. And the restoration of hope works the same way โ through consistent small returns, not dramatic overnight transformations.
Anchor this dua to your Fajr prayer. Say it immediately after completing the sunnah of Fajr, before starting your day. This places hope in Allah as the first intentional act of your waking hours โ before the news, before your phone, before the mental to-do list takes over.
Say it aloud in moments of anxiety. When a worrying thought starts to spiral, pause and say this dua instead of following the spiral. It works as a pattern interrupt โ the nafs is starting a story about how things won't work out, and this dua redirects the conversation toward Allah's mercy.
Write it somewhere visible. The Arabic script on a sticky note near your mirror, on your desk, at your bedside. Familiarity with the words means they come to the mind naturally in difficult moments rather than needing to be looked up.
Track the habit. The goal is not occasional use in a crisis โ it is daily practice so that hope in Allah becomes the default state of the heart rather than something you have to rebuild from scratch each time difficulty comes. A consistent daily practice, even briefly, builds that default over months.

Common Questions
What is the difference between hope (raja') and wishful thinking? In Islamic terminology, raja' (ุฑูุฌูุงุก) โ hope โ is grounded hope: hope based on sincere effort alongside trust in Allah's mercy. Wishful thinking (umniyya) is hoping for good outcomes without doing the work or making the sincere turning to Allah. The scholars say: hope without action is delusion, but action without hope is pride. The dua above embodies the correct balance โ it asks Allah to set affairs right while acknowledging total dependence on His mercy.
Is it a sign of weak faith to feel hopeless? Feeling hopeless is a human experience, not a verdict on your faith. The Companions of the Prophet ๏ทบ experienced fear, grief, and moments of feeling overwhelmed. What matters is what you do with that feeling โ whether you take it to Allah or let the nafs settle into permanent despair. The dua itself is the act of not giving up. Saying it means you are still reaching for Allah, which is the opposite of losing faith.
How do I sustain hope when nothing seems to change despite making dua? The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The dua of a servant is answered as long as he does not pray for sin or cutting of ties of kinship, and as long as he does not become impatient." They asked, "What is impatience?" He said: "When he says, 'I have prayed and prayed, but I have not been answered.'" (Muslim 2735) The answer may be delayed, redirected, or stored as reward for the akhira. Trust in the timing is part of the hope itself.
The Mercy You Are Hoping For Is Real
Hope in Allah is not wishful thinking. It is the most rational stance a believer can take โ because the One you are hoping in is Al-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Wahhab. The Generous. The Merciful. The One who says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." (Ghafir, 40:60)
Your nafs will tell you it is too late, that you have failed too many times, that you are not worthy. That is the voice of the nafs โ not the voice of truth.
Say the dua. Say it again tomorrow. Build the habit of turning to Allah before despair has a chance to settle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua when you feel like giving up?
The Prophet ๏ทบ taught a dua that translates to: 'O Allah, Your mercy is what I hope for. Do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye, and set right all my affairs. There is no god but You.' (Abu Dawud 5090) This dua acknowledges total dependence on Allah and is especially powerful in moments of hopelessness.
Is it haram to lose hope in Islam?
Losing hope in Allah's mercy โ a state called qunoot โ is considered a serious spiritual illness in Islam. Allah says in the Quran: 'Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.' (Az-Zumar, 39:53) Feeling hopeless is human; allowing that feeling to become a fixed belief that Allah cannot help you is what the Quran warns against.
How many times should I repeat this dua for hope?
The Prophet ๏ทบ did not specify a fixed number for this particular dua. Say it with full attention and sincerity rather than rushing through a count. Once with complete presence is worth more than a hundred repetitions on autopilot. If you want structure, include it in your morning and evening adhkar.
Can I make dua for hope in English?
Yes. The language of the heart matters more than the language of the tongue when it comes to personal supplication. If you know and understand the Arabic, it carries additional blessing from following the prophetic words exactly. But if you need to pour your heart out in your own language, do that โ Allah understands every language and every heartfelt plea.
