In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most people start their workday the same way: phone, email, messages, tasks. By the time they have been at work for thirty minutes, they are already behind and already stressed, and Allah has not crossed their mind.
The Islamic approach to work is not to separate the sacred from the professional. It is to bring the sacred into the professional from the very first moment โ because work is where you spend most of your waking life, and a day that begins without Allah tends to continue without Him.
The Dua
The foundational dua for beginning any act โ including entering your workplace and starting your day:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ุชููููููููุชู ุนูููู ุงููููููุ ููุง ุญููููู ููููุง ูููููุฉู ุฅููููุง ุจูุงูููููู
Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
"In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might and no power except with Allah." โ (Abu Dawud 5095)
For asking Allah to make your work easy and blessed:
ุงููููููู ูู ููุง ุณููููู ุฅููููุง ู ูุง ุฌูุนูููุชููู ุณูููููุงุ ููุฃูููุชู ุชูุฌูุนููู ุงููุญูุฒููู ุฅูุฐูุง ุดูุฆูุชู ุณูููููุง
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'alul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla.
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy when You will." โ (Ibn Hibban, authenticated by Al-Albani)
For barakah in your time and efforts:
ุงููููููู ูู ุจูุงุฑููู ููู ููู ู ูุง ุฑูุฒูููุชูููู
Allahumma barik li fima razaqtani.
"O Allah, bless me in what You have provided for me."
The Story Behind It
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a man leaves his house and says 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' it is said to him: 'You are guided, you are protected, you are covered.' And the Shaytaan turns away from him." (Abu Dawud 5095)
This was the dua for leaving the house โ which, for most of us, is the dua for going to work. The guidance, protection, and covering mentioned are not vague metaphors. They are real outcomes of a real practice. The workday that begins with Bismillah and trust in Allah is not the same as the one that begins with an anxious scroll through email.
The Prophet also said: "No one earns better food than one who eats from the work of his own hands, and the Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) used to eat from the work of his own hands." (Bukhari 2072). This means work โ real, honest work โ is deeply dignified in Islam. It is not something to escape from spirituality. It is a place spirituality should enter.
How to Build a Daily Work Dua Habit
The morning transition. There is a moment between leaving your home and starting your first task at work โ in transit, walking in, sitting at your desk. That transition is the perfect moment for dua. It costs nothing to say Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallah as you walk through the door. This tiny act sets the frame for the entire day.
Set an intention before your first task. Before opening your email, before your first meeting, say: "I am doing this work to earn halal provision for myself and my family, and to fulfill my responsibility." This niyyah (intention) transforms a mundane act into worship. The Prophet said actions are judged by their intentions (Bukhari 1).
Use transitions during the day. Every time you move between tasks โ finishing a meeting, completing a project, switching contexts โ say Bismillah before the next one. This keeps you present and keeps Allah in the picture throughout the day, not just at the start.
The difficult moment dua. When something hard hits โ a conflict, a failure, unexpected pressure โ say Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil. This was the Companions' response in crisis (Surah Al Imran 3:173). It does not solve the problem, but it reorients you: you are not alone in this, and the outcome is ultimately in Allah's hands.

Related Duas
Dua for leaving the house: The dua for leaving the house is the most directly applicable dua for setting out to work โ covering the journey itself with protection and tawakkul.
Dua for barakah: If you want to ask Allah to bless not just your day but your work specifically, the dua for barakah provides the supplications for blessing in all aspects of your life and provision.
Dua for motivation: On the days when starting work feels genuinely hard, the dua for motivation gives you the words to ask Allah for energy and willingness to begin.
Common Questions
What if my work environment makes it hard to maintain my practice?
Start small. You do not need to visibly pray or have religious items at your desk to maintain your dua practice. A silent Bismillah as you sit down is invisible to everyone around you. A brief mental intention before your first task takes two seconds. These small, consistent acts maintain your connection to Allah in any environment.
Is it appropriate to make dua for my career goals?
Absolutely. You can ask Allah for promotion, for a better job, for success in your field, for skills and knowledge in your work. The Prophet encouraged specific dua. Asking Allah for good things in your career is not worldly in a negative sense โ it is turning to the right source for what you need. Just pair the dua with the effort, and accept whatever Allah decrees.
I do not love my job. Can I still find spiritual meaning in it?
Yes. The Islamic principle is that any halal work done with a sincere intention of providing for your family and fulfilling your responsibilities is worship. You do not need to love your job to find meaning in it. The meaning is in the intention, not the task itself. Even difficult, monotonous work performed honestly and with integrity has value in the sight of Allah.
Closing
The door you walk through every morning โ whether it is an office, a store, a classroom, a kitchen โ is an opportunity. An opportunity to choose how you begin.
You can walk in distracted, already behind, already anxious. Or you can walk in with Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallah on your tongue and in your heart, having placed your day in Allah's hands before the first email arrives.
The second option does not make the day easier automatically. But it changes who you are in the day. And that changes everything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a specific dua for entering work in Islam?
There is no hadith with a specific dua labeled 'entering work,' but the Islamic tradition provides general duas for beginning any task or place, which apply directly: Bismillah (In the name of Allah) is recommended before starting any meaningful act. The dua for leaving the house covers the journey to work. And the dua for beginning a new project applies when starting your workday. Together, these form a complete beginning.
How do I make my work an act of worship?
By beginning with intention (niyyah) and by remembering that earning halal provision for yourself and your family is an Islamic obligation and a form of worship. The Prophet said: 'No one eats better food than one who eats from the work of his own hands.' (Bukhari 2072). Saying Bismillah and making dua as you begin reminds you of the Islamic purpose behind your work โ and transforms the act from mere earning into something with spiritual value.
What should I say when I face a difficult situation at work?
Say 'Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil' โ Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best of guardians (Surah Al Imran 3:173). This was the Companions' response to news that an entire army was marching against them โ and their faith increased. For smaller difficulties: 'Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla' โ O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy.
Can I do dhikr silently during work?
Yes. Silent dhikr โ remembering Allah in the heart while your hands and mind are occupied with work โ is one of the signs of a heart that has found its connection to Allah. The Prophet said the best dhikr is to say 'Alhamdulillah' (Muslim 2737). You do not need to stop working to remember Allah. The goal is a mind that returns to Allah between tasks, in transitions, in moments of waiting.
Is it permissible to make dua at your work desk?
Yes. There is no restriction on where you make dua โ you do not need to be in a mosque or facing qiblah (though facing qiblah when possible is better). A short, sincere dua at your desk before starting work, or at any point during the day when you need Allah's help, is fully valid.
