ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููู ุงูุฑููุญูู ูฐูู ุงูุฑููุญูููู ู
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
You have studied, you have reviewed, and now the exam paper is in front of you. Your mind goes blank. Your heart races. In that exact moment, what do you reach for?
For many of us, panic is the automatic response. But there is another response โ one that was handed down by prophets and carried through generations of students who passed their greatest tests not just on paper, but within their own hearts. Before you write a single answer, there is a word to say to Allah.
This is that word.
The Dua for an Exam
The most widely recited dua before an exam comes directly from the Quran โ the words of Prophet Musa (Moses) ๏ทบ before he stood before Pharaoh, the greatest test of his life.
Rabbish rahli sadri wa yassir li amri wahlul uqdatan min lisani yafqahu qawli
"My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so they may understand my speech." โ (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-28)
When to say it: Right before you begin the exam โ silently, with full focus on the meaning. Let each word land.
Another powerful dua to pair with it:
ุงููููููู ูู ููุง ุณููููู ุฅููููุง ู ูุง ุฌูุนูููุชููู ุณูููููุงุ ููุฃูููุชู ุชูุฌูุนููู ุงููุญูุฒููู ุฅูุฐูุง ุดูุฆูุชู ุณูููููุง
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan, wa anta taj'alul hazna idha shi'ta sahlan
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if You wish." โ (Ibn Hibban 2427)
The Story Behind the Dua
When Allah commanded Musa ๏ทบ to go to Pharaoh and deliver the message of Islam, Musa did not say, "I'm ready." He did not project confidence he didn't have. Instead, he turned to Allah and said: I need Your help to open my chest, ease my task, and let my words land.
This is exactly what you face when you sit down for an exam โ a task in front of you, knowledge that needs to flow, and words that need to come out right.
The scholars note that Musa ๏ทบ asked for three things:
- Sharh al-sadr โ an expanded, settled chest (the opposite of anxiety)
- Taysir al-amr โ ease in the affair at hand
- Clarity of speech โ that his words would be understood
These are precisely what every student needs. The dua is not a magic shortcut. It is an acknowledgment that your preparation alone is not enough โ you need Allah's facilitation. And that acknowledgment, made sincerely, is itself a form of worship.
How to Build a Pre-Exam Dua Habit
The mistake most students make is treating dua like a last resort โ something to scramble for in a panic two minutes before the exam begins. That is better than nothing. But it is not the full picture.
Here is how to build a genuine dua habit around exams:
The night before: After your final review, stop studying at least 30 minutes before sleep. Read the two duas above. Then make personal dua โ tell Allah what you are worried about, what you need, and leave it with Him. This is not weakness. This is tawakkul (trust in Allah after taking your means).
The morning of: After Fajr, before checking your notes, recite both duas. This anchors your day in remembrance instead of anxiety. If you already have a morning dua routine, add the exam dua to it.
Right before entering: Stand outside the exam room for thirty seconds. Breathe. Say the duas quietly. Feel the meaning of "ease my task" โ really mean it.
During the exam: When you hit a question you cannot answer, do not spiral. Whisper Allahumma la sahla... internally and move on. Come back to it later. Sometimes the answer surfaces when panic stops blocking it.
Tracking consistency: The students who build real dua habits are not the ones who memorize the most Arabic โ they are the ones who show up every day. Even a 30-second moment of connection with Allah before each study session builds the kind of trust that carries you through an exam. If you want to build that habit, the Deen Back app lets you track your daily duas and build streaks.

Common Questions
What if I forgot to say the dua and the exam already started?
Say it now, silently. There is no rule that dua must happen before the task begins. Allah hears you mid-exam just as clearly as He hears you before it. Even a brief Ya Allah, help me in your heart counts.
I said the dua and still did badly. Did it not work?
Dua works โ but not always in the way we expect. Sometimes the benefit is that you remain calm under pressure instead of freezing. Sometimes it is that you do better than you would have without it. And sometimes Allah has a plan that looks like failure but leads to something better. Trust the process.
Do I need to be in a state of wudu to make this dua?
No. Wudu is not required for dua. It is preferred for formal supplication, but you can make dua in any state, any time.
Can I combine both duas?
Yes. Say the dua of Musa first (it asks Allah to expand your chest), then the second dua (which asks for ease). They work beautifully together.
What if I feel like my dua is not sincere enough?
Sincerity is a journey, not a switch. Even a dua made with doubt and distraction is better than no dua. Ask Allah to help you be sincere โ that itself is a dua.
Your Exam Starts with This
Every exam is a test of two things: what you have learned, and who you trust. The student who enters with knowledge and tawakkul is better prepared than the one who enters with knowledge alone.
You have done your preparation. Now hand it to Allah. Say the duas. Trust the outcome. And whether the result is what you hoped or not, know that the one who calls on Allah in difficulty is never truly alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua to read before an exam?
The dua of Prophet Musa โ Rabbish rahli sadri wa yassir li amri โ is widely recommended before exams. It asks Allah to expand your chest and ease your affairs.
Can I say the dua for an exam in English?
Yes, you can make dua in any language. However, learning the Arabic text carries extra blessing and helps you focus on the meaning.
How many times should I repeat the exam dua?
There is no set number. Say it once with full presence or repeat it multiple times. Focus on sincerity over quantity.
Should I say dua during the exam or only before?
Both. Say your dua before entering the exam room, and whisper it internally whenever you feel stuck on a question.
Does making dua guarantee I will pass?
Dua is a means, not a guarantee. Combined with preparation and tawakkul, it puts your trust in Allah while you do your part.
