A Muslim seated in reflection, engaging in dhikr of istighfar for forgiveness

The Prophet ﷺ did not sin the way you and I sin. He was protected from major sin. Yet Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that he heard the Prophet say: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and return to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." (Sahih Bukhari 6307)

If the Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness more than seventy times daily, what does that say about how often you and I should?

This is not guilt-tripping. It is an invitation. The dhikr of forgiveness — istighfar — is one of the most powerful spiritual practices available to a Muslim, with documented effects on provisions, mental peace, and the heart's relationship with Allah. And it takes less than three minutes of your day.

The Dhikr for Forgiveness

Sayyid al-Istighfar — once morning, once evening:

"O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity except You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You."

— (Sahih Bukhari 6306)

The simple, consistent daily formula:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullahil-'azimal-ladhi la ilaha illa huwal-hayyul-qayyumu wa atubu ilayh

"I seek forgiveness from Allah the Magnificent, besides whom there is no deity, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I repent to Him."

— Repeat at least 3 times after each salah, and 100 times throughout the day as a general target.

When: Sayyid al-Istighfar once in the morning (after Fajr) and once in the evening (after Maghrib). The simple Astaghfirullah can be said at any time — driving, cooking, walking.

The Story Behind It

Nuh عليه السلام called his people for 950 years. When they refused, he made the following observation to Allah — preserved in the Quran as guidance for all believers:

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا ۝ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا ۝ وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ

"I said: Seek forgiveness of your Lord — He is ever Forgiving. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers, and give you increase in wealth and children." — (Quran 71:10-12)

This is not metaphorical. Nuh was telling his people that the practical solution to drought, poverty, and difficulty was istighfar. The Prophet ﷺ quoted this passage and connected it to the real-world effects of consistent forgiveness-seeking.

The scholars explain this through the concept of barakah (blessing): sins block the flow of blessings the way a dam blocks water. Istighfar removes the blockage. This is why many Islamic scholars prescribed 100 istighfar per day not as a symbolic gesture but as a genuine practice for people facing financial difficulty, illness, or blocked goals.

Shaddad ibn Aws رضي الله عنه reported Sayyid al-Istighfar from the Prophet, who said: "Whoever says it with conviction in the morning and dies before evening is among the people of Jannah." The same for evening. This is among the clearest and strongest conditional promises in the hadith literature.

How to Build a Daily Forgiveness Practice

The nafs resists istighfar. It prefers to forget, minimize, or rationalize. The daily practice of dhikr for forgiveness is an act of counter-nafs discipline — it requires the humility to regularly acknowledge that you are fallible and in need of Allah's mercy.

Start with Sayyid al-Istighfar in the morning adhkar. Place it right after your post-salah dhikr after Fajr. One recitation, said deliberately, with attention to each phrase. This is the most weighted item in your forgiveness practice.

Use driving time for Astaghfirullah. The period between home and work is a built-in dhikr slot. Most people listen to music or podcasts. Replace even half of that time with Astaghfirullah repeated quietly. 100 repetitions takes about three minutes.

Say it for specific things, not just generally. Once or twice per week, name the specific sin or failing you are asking forgiveness for. "Ya Allah, I sought forgiveness generally, but today I specifically want to repent for how I spoke to my parents. I know it was wrong." This kind of specific tawbah is more powerful than routine repetition.

End the day with it. Before the sleeping dua, add three repetitions of Sayyid al-Istighfar. Ending the day with forgiveness-seeking creates a psychological and spiritual clean-start for the next morning.

Tawbah when you have sinned:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الْغَفُورُ

Rabbighfirli wa tub 'alayya innaka antat-tawwabul-ghafur

"My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance — You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Forgiving." — (Ibn Majah 3814)

The articles on how to make sincere tawbah and how to make istighfar a daily habit go deeper on the practical and spiritual dimensions. For specific forgiveness in the context of major sins, dua for forgiveness of major sins covers the relevant supplications.

Common Questions

Does saying Astaghfirullah without feeling it count? The tongue starts the process. Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that the heart follows the tongue when the tongue is consistent. Begin saying it even if it feels empty, and the feeling will develop with practice. But also deliberately slow down sometimes and say one Astaghfirullah with full presence — that one counts more than a hundred mechanical ones.

What is the difference between istighfar and tawbah? Istighfar is asking Allah for forgiveness. Tawbah is repentance — the full turning away from a sin with remorse, cessation, and intention not to return. Tawbah includes istighfar but goes further. Daily istighfar covers general fallibility; tawbah is for specific sins you want to formally repent from.

How do I know if my forgiveness has been accepted? You cannot know with certainty. But the Prophet said the sign of accepted tawbah is that the servant does not return to the sin. Feeling lighter, finding the sin less appealing, or experiencing an increase in blessings are often mentioned as positive indicators.

Can I say Sayyid al-Istighfar in English? You can make the equivalent supplication in English for personal tawbah. But the specific prophetic text of Sayyid al-Istighfar is worth learning in Arabic — the transliteration takes about two days to memorize.

The Practice That Keeps the Heart Clean

Sins accumulate. They crust over the heart in a way that makes worship feel hollow and the connection to Allah feel distant. The Prophet ﷺ described this as ran — a covering that grows with each sin. (Quran 83:14)

Consistent istighfar is the daily cleaning. Not because you are performing a ceremony, but because you genuinely acknowledge what you are and turn to the One who can actually change it.

The Prophet sought forgiveness seventy times a day. He did not do this because he needed it more than us — he did it because he understood, better than anyone, that the heart requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dhikr for seeking forgiveness?

Sayyid al-Istighfar — the Master Supplication for Forgiveness — is the most comprehensive. It acknowledges Allah's lordship, the covenant with Him, one's sins, and asks for His mercy. The Prophet said whoever says it with conviction in the morning and dies before evening has earned Jannah, and the same for evening. (Sahih Bukhari 6306)

How many times should I say Astaghfirullah?

The Prophet ﷺ said Astaghfirullah or sought forgiveness more than 70 times daily — in some narrations, more than 100. There is no minimum, but 100 times is a well-supported target. The key is that some of them should be said with real presence and intention, not just counted mechanically.

What is Sayyid al-Istighfar?

Sayyid al-Istighfar is: Allahumma anta rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana abduka... It is the most complete form of istighfar taught in the Sunnah. It covers acknowledgment of Allah as Lord, the servant's covenant, their sin, and a direct request for forgiveness while acknowledging no one forgives but Allah.

Can saying Astaghfirullah help with rizq and solving problems?

Yes — the Prophet quoted Nuh عليه السلام in Surah Nuh (71:10-12): 'I said, seek forgiveness of your Lord — He will send rain from the sky in abundance, increase your wealth and children, provide you with gardens, and provide you with rivers.' Scholars unanimously link consistent istighfar to the opening of provisions and relief from difficulties.

Does Allah forgive if I keep repeating the same sin?

Yes, as long as the repentance is sincere each time. A hadith in Abu Dawud reports Allah saying: 'My servant sinned and then said: O Allah, forgive my sin. And Allah said: My servant knew he has a Lord who forgives and takes to account. I have forgiven My servant.' This was repeated three times. The door of istighfar does not close from repetition.
