In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is something remarkable about honey: the Quran mentioned it as a healing over 1,400 years ago, and modern science keeps confirming that statement with new research.
But for the Muslim, the significance of honey is not just scientific. It is a reminder that the Sunnah โ the Prophet's lived example โ contains a wisdom that does not expire. When you eat honey with the intention of following Prophetic medicine, a daily habit becomes an act of worship.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say About Honey
Allah says in Surah An-Nahl:
"And your Lord inspired the bee: 'Build homes in the mountains, in the trees, and in what people construct. Then feed on all kinds of fruit and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.' From their bellies comes a drink of varying colours in which there is healing for people."
โ (Surah An-Nahl, 16:68-69)
The word used is shifa โ healing. Not "possibly useful" or "somewhat beneficial" but shifa, the same word used for the Quran itself.
The Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ was even more specific:
"Honey is a remedy for every illness, and the Quran is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Quran and honey."
โ (Sahih Bukhari 5682)
And in another hadith:
"Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Quran."
โ (Ibn Majah 3452)
The Prophet used honey personally. It was part of his home. He would drink honey water (sharbat al-'asal) โ honey dissolved in water โ and would recommend it specifically for stomach ailments, digestive issues, and general wellness.
Why Modern Muslims Overlook This
Here is the gap: many of us know honey is "good for you" in a vague way. But it has become another health trend โ something you add to tea when you have a cold and forget about otherwise.
The sunnah approach is different. It is intentional and consistent. The Prophet did not eat honey because it was fashionable or because a nutritionist recommended it. He ate it as part of a holistic approach to caring for the body Allah entrusted to him.
The nafs prefers convenience. Processed food is easy. The sunnah diet requires a small deliberate choice at each meal. That deliberateness โ that small resistance to convenience โ is part of what makes it a spiritual practice, not just a dietary one.
The Established Benefits of Honey
What science has confirmed since the Quran's statement:
Antibacterial properties. Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, a low pH, and osmotic effects that make it inhospitable to bacteria. Medical-grade honey (Manuka honey, for example) is used in clinical wound care for this reason.
Digestive health. Honey has prebiotic properties that support beneficial gut bacteria. The Prophet specifically recommended it for stomach ailments โ Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (Zad al-Ma'ad) documented its use for digestive complaints in Prophetic medicine.
Antioxidant effects. Raw honey contains flavonoids and polyphenols that help reduce oxidative stress โ a factor in inflammation and aging.
Cough and throat soothing. Multiple clinical studies confirm honey is as effective as common over-the-counter cough medications for calming a nighttime cough โ particularly in children. This is Quranic medicine confirmed by the WHO.
Wound healing. Applied topically, honey creates a moist healing environment and prevents bacterial infection. Pre-modern Islamic physicians used it widely for wounds.
Energy. Honey's natural sugars (fructose and glucose) provide a slower energy release than refined sugar, making it a better sweetener for sustained energy.
How to Practice This Daily
The goal is not to eat honey occasionally when you remember it exists. The sunnah model is consistency โ istiqamah โ in small, beneficial habits.
Morning honey water. Dissolve one to two tablespoons of raw honey in a glass of warm (not boiling โ heat destroys some enzymes) water. Drink it before breakfast. This follows the practice the Prophet used and also provides digestive and energy benefits first thing in the morning.
Replace processed sweeteners. Use honey instead of sugar in tea, in oatmeal, in yogurt. The flavor is richer, the glycemic impact is lower, and the act of using a sunnah food turns a routine choice into a conscious one.
Keep it visible. A jar of honey on your kitchen counter is far more likely to be used than one hidden in the back of a cupboard. Environment design applies here too.
Use it medicinally. When you feel a cold coming on, have a sore throat, or experience stomach discomfort, reach for honey first. This is not alternative medicine replacing proper care โ it is using what Allah placed in creation as one of the legitimate means of healing.
Connect intention to consumption. Before eating honey, recall why you are doing it: following the Sunnah, using a Quranic remedy, caring for the body Allah gave you. A conscious act of following Prophetic guidance carries reward even in mundane moments like breakfast.

The Bigger Picture: Prophetic Medicine as a Daily Habit
Honey is not an isolated sunnah. It is part of a holistic prophetic approach to health that includes specific foods, sleeping positions, eating practices, and physical activity โ all of which the Prophet modeled and recommended.
Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah in Zad al-Ma'ad (Provisions of the Hereafter) dedicated an entire section to Prophetic medicine, cataloguing the Prophet's approach to healing from a framework of both spiritual and physical wellbeing. Honey appears repeatedly as one of the most recommended substances.
The Muslim who builds sunnah health habits is not just pursuing physical wellness โ they are practicing shukr (gratitude) by caring for the trust (the body) that Allah gave them, and demonstrating tawakkul (trust) by using the means Allah prescribed rather than dismissing them for newer trends.
Signs of Progress
You are practicing the sunnah of honey consistently when:
- It is a natural part of your kitchen routine, not an occasional reminder
- You reach for it instinctively when sick rather than as a last resort after conventional options
- The intention behind consuming it has shifted from "this is healthy" to "this is following the Prophet"
- You have noticed genuine effects on your digestion, energy, or recovery from illness
Common Questions
Does cooking with honey reduce its benefits?
Yes. High heat (above 40ยฐC/104ยฐF) degrades beneficial enzymes and some antioxidants. For medicinal use, add honey to warm rather than boiling water, and avoid baking with it if you want the full therapeutic effect. Using it raw as a spread or in room-temperature food preserves its properties best.
Is it sunnah to use any specific type of honey?
The Prophet used the honey available in Arabia, which was generally raw and unprocessed. Modern equivalents would be raw, unfiltered honey from local or trusted sources. Manuka honey has the most clinical research behind its antibacterial claims. Any raw, pure honey is following the spirit of the sunnah.
Can I give honey to infants?
No. Honey should not be given to children under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. This is a medical safety consideration that applies universally.
Is it better to eat it on its own or with other foods?
Both are fine. The Prophet drank it in water. It can also be eaten directly with a spoon or used as a condiment. The method of consumption is less important than the consistency of the habit.
A Remedy From the Creator
When Allah says there is healing in honey, He is speaking about something He created and placed in the world for your benefit. Using it is not just self-care โ it is an acknowledgment that Allah provides for every need, including the health of the body.
The Prophet's consistent use of honey was not a cultural preference. It was the practice of a man who paid careful attention to the world Allah created and used it with gratitude and intentionality.
You can do the same โ starting tomorrow morning, with a spoon of honey in a glass of warm water.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Quran say about honey?
Allah says in Surah An-Nahl (16:69): 'From their bellies comes a drink of varying colours in which there is healing for people.' This is a direct Quranic affirmation that honey contains healing properties โ something confirmed by modern medicine 1,400 years later.
How much honey should you eat daily according to the Sunnah?
There is no fixed prescribed amount. The Prophet would drink honey dissolved in water (honey water) and recommended it for stomach ailments. A common scholarly recommendation is one to three tablespoons daily, particularly on an empty stomach in the morning, following the general Prophetic principle of moderation in eating and medicine.
Can honey cure illness according to Islam?
The Quran describes honey as containing healing (shifa), and the Prophet specifically recommended it for stomach ailments. Modern research confirms antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Islam does not say honey cures all illness โ it is one of the lawful means (asbab) of healing that Allah placed in creation. Seeking conventional medical care alongside sunnah remedies is fully appropriate.
Is all honey halal?
Honey from bees is halal. However, some commercial honey products are adulterated with corn syrup or other additives โ check the ingredients. Raw, pure honey is the closest to what the Prophet used. Honey-flavored products or blends are a different category โ read labels.
When is the best time to eat honey according to the Sunnah?
The Prophet would sometimes drink honey water in the morning. Modern health practitioners also recommend honey on an empty stomach for digestive benefits. Morning consumption โ perhaps before or with breakfast โ aligns with both sunnah practice and contemporary health guidance.
