In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Prayer beads draped over a wooden surface beside a silent stringed instrument gathering dust, warm golden light, cream and green tones

This is the one nobody wants to hear. You love music. It is in your car, your headphones, your morning routine, your workout. It is the background of your life. And now you are wondering whether all of it โ€” the instruments, the beats, the melodies you have loved since childhood โ€” is something Islam asks you to give up.

You are not alone in struggling with this. The question of music is one of the most searched Islamic topics online, and the instruments question takes it a step further. Let us face it honestly.

The Quick Answer

The majority of scholars across all four madhabs consider musical instruments โ€” other than the duff (hand drum) โ€” to be haram. This is based on explicit hadith:

"There will be people from my ummah who will seek to make permissible adultery, silk (for men), alcohol, and ma'azif (musical instruments)." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5590)

The word ma'azif (ู…ุนุงุฒู) specifically refers to musical instruments. The Prophet (peace be upon him) listed them alongside things that are unambiguously haram โ€” adultery, silk for men, and alcohol. That placement is not accidental.

The exception: The duff is explicitly permitted. It was used at weddings and celebrations during the Prophet's time. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed singing girls to play the duff during Eid (Sahih al-Bukhari 952).

What the Quran and Sunnah Say

The primary evidence comes from the hadith above, which is in Sahih al-Bukhari โ€” the most authenticated hadith collection. The Quran also contains a relevant verse:

ูˆูŽู…ูู†ูŽ ุงู„ู†ูŽู‘ุงุณู ู…ูŽู† ูŠูŽุดู’ุชูŽุฑููŠ ู„ูŽู‡ู’ูˆูŽ ุงู„ู’ุญูŽุฏููŠุซู ู„ููŠูุถูู„ูŽู‘ ุนูŽู† ุณูŽุจููŠู„ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู

"And among the people is he who purchases idle talk to mislead from the path of Allah." โ€” (Surah Luqman, 31:6)

The great companion Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) swore three times that "idle talk" (lahw al-hadith) in this verse refers to music and singing. This interpretation was shared by Ibn Abbas, Jabir, and other companions.

The minority view: Some scholars, including Ibn Hazm and more recently Yusuf al-Qaradawi, have argued that the hadith in Bukhari has a technical chain issue and that music is permissible as long as it does not contain haram content (sexual lyrics, promotion of alcohol, etc.) and does not distract from worship. This is a legitimate scholarly opinion, but it remains the minority.

The practical reality: Even scholars who permit some forms of music acknowledge that most modern music โ€” with its explicit content, promotion of lifestyles that contradict Islam, and addictive nature โ€” is at best makruh (disliked) and at worst clearly haram in its content, regardless of the instruments debate.

Why This Is Actually Hard

Let us be completely honest: music is one of the hardest things to give up. There is a reason for that.

Music triggers dopamine release in your brain โ€” the same chemical involved in food, social connection, and addictive substances. Your brain is literally wired to crave it. When you try to stop, your nafs does not just whisper โ€” it screams. It plays your favorite song in your head. It makes silence feel unbearable.

Social pressure compounds the problem. Music is everywhere โ€” at the gym, in the car with friends, at gatherings, on social media. Choosing to avoid it means constantly swimming against the current. Your nafs will tell you: "This is too extreme. Nobody actually does this. Just listen casually."

And then there is the emotional attachment. Music is tied to your memories, your identity, your emotions. The song that was playing when you graduated, fell in love, went through hardship โ€” giving up music feels like giving up a part of yourself.

That emotional pull? That is exactly why it is such a powerful test of your self-control. The things that are hardest to give up for Allah's sake are the things that earn the greatest reward.

What to Do About It โ€” Practical Steps

  1. Do not go cold turkey unless you can handle it. For most people, quitting music overnight leads to relapse within days. Instead, reduce gradually. Start by removing music from one part of your day โ€” your morning commute, for example. Replace it with Quran recitation or an Islamic podcast.

  2. Build a replacement playlist. You need something to fill the gap. Create a playlist of:

    • Beautiful Quran recitations (try Mishary Rashid Alafasy or Abdul Rahman Mossad)
    • A cappella nasheeds (no instruments)
    • Islamic lectures and podcasts
    • Nature sounds or ambient audio for focus
  3. Identify your triggers. When do you reach for music? Boredom? Stress? Working out? Driving? For each trigger, prepare a specific alternative. Gym playlist? Replace with nasheeds. Stress relief? Try dhikr and dua. Driving? Queue up a lecture series.

  4. Track your music-free days. Build a streak. Day one of no music. Day two. Day seven. Day thirty. Each day you resist, your nafs gets weaker and your willpower gets stronger. Seeing your streak grow is genuinely motivating.

  1. Experience the Quran as a replacement, not just an obligation. Many Muslims who quit music describe the Quran becoming sweeter to their ears. This is not poetry โ€” it is a real phenomenon. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the Quran and music do not coexist in the same heart. As you reduce music, you create space for the Quran to fill.

  2. Be patient with yourself. This is one of the hardest habits to break. If you slip, do not spiral into guilt. Make tawbah, get back on track, and keep building. Allah sees your struggle, and He rewards the effort โ€” not just the outcome.

  3. Find Muslim friends who have made the switch. Community makes everything easier. If you know someone who has successfully quit music, ask them about their experience. Their journey will inspire yours.

Dua for Leaving What You Love for Allah's Sake

"O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 2721)

This dua is perfect for the music struggle because it asks for taqwa (piety) and 'afaf (restraint) โ€” the exact qualities you need to choose Allah's pleasure over your nafs.

Common Questions

What about background music I cannot control โ€” in stores, restaurants, waiting rooms?

You are not held accountable for music you did not choose to listen to and cannot reasonably avoid. The ruling applies to voluntarily seeking out and listening to music. If you are in a public place with background music, you have not sinned. Focus on what you can control โ€” your own playlists, your car, your headphones.

Can my children learn to play instruments at school?

This is a common dilemma for Muslim parents in non-Muslim-majority countries. Some families opt out of music classes. Others allow basic participation to avoid social difficulty while teaching the Islamic perspective at home. Consult with a scholar who understands your local context and make a decision that works for your family's iman and circumstances.

Is beatboxing or vocal percussion haram?

Scholars differ on this. Since beatboxing uses the voice rather than instruments, some argue it falls outside the instruments prohibition. Others say it imitates instruments and carries the same ruling. If the content is clean and it is used in the context of nasheeds or Islamic content, many scholars are lenient. Use your judgment and err on the side of caution.

I feel depressed without music. Is this normal?

Absolutely. Music withdrawal is real because of the dopamine connection. The first two weeks are the hardest. After that, most people find that the Quran, nasheeds, and dhikr start filling the emotional space that music used to occupy. If you are experiencing clinical depression, please seek professional help โ€” a therapist can help you with coping strategies that do not involve any haram content.

Your Journey Starts Now

Giving up musical instruments โ€” or music altogether โ€” is not about becoming joyless. It is about making room for something better. The Quran was sent to be your comfort, your companion, your source of peace. But it cannot compete with Spotify running 24/7 in your ears.

Start small. One music-free hour today. Then a morning. Then a day. Replace, do not just remove. Track your progress. And remember: the things you give up for Allah's sake are never truly lost โ€” they are traded for something eternal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are musical instruments haram in Islam?

The majority of scholars from the four madhabs consider musical instruments haram, based on hadith in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) specifically mentioned ma'azif (musical instruments) as something that would be made permissible by some people even though they are forbidden. The duff (hand drum) is an exception, permitted for celebrations like weddings and Eid. A minority of scholars allow certain instruments under specific conditions.

Is the duff (drum) allowed in Islam?

Yes. The duff (a simple hand drum without bells or cymbals) is the one instrument explicitly permitted in authentic hadith. It was used during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) at weddings, Eid celebrations, and to welcome him to Madinah. The permission is specific to the duff and does not extend to all percussion instruments.

Is listening to nasheeds with instruments haram?

This depends on the type of instruments used. Nasheeds with only the duff are permissible by consensus. Nasheeds with other instruments are subject to the same scholarly disagreement as music in general. Many scholars recommend a cappella nasheeds or those with only the duff as the safest option. If you are trying to transition away from mainstream music, even nasheeds with instruments are a better intermediate step.

What if I play an instrument professionally or study music?

This is a sensitive situation that requires personal consultation with a knowledgeable scholar who understands your circumstances. If you are professionally invested in music, the transition away from it is a major life change. Focus on building your relationship with Allah first, make sincere dua for guidance, and take gradual steps. Do not let the enormity of the change prevent you from starting.

Is it really possible to live without music in the modern world?

Yes, but it requires intentional effort. Music is embedded in advertising, social media, public spaces, and even phone ringtones. You are not expected to plug your ears in every store. The ruling applies to voluntarily choosing to listen to music. Replace your playlists with Quran recitation, nasheeds, Islamic lectures, and podcasts. Many Muslims who have made this switch describe it as one of the most transformative changes in their spiritual life.
