In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Your exam is tomorrow. Your notes are spread across the desk. You have studied, but the anxiety is still there โ that tight feeling in your chest, the racing thoughts, the fear that your mind will go blank the moment you flip the paper over.
You are not alone. Every student knows this feeling. And here is what most people forget: your preparation is only half the equation. The other half is turning to the One who controls all outcomes. You studied with your hands. Now ask with your heart.
The Dua
The most powerful dua for exams comes directly from the Quran โ the words of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) before one of the most daunting tasks in human history: confronting Pharaoh.
Rabbi ishrah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli.
"My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech." โ (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-28)
When to say it: Before you start studying. Before you enter the exam hall. Before you open the paper. Make it your exam-day ritual.
A second essential dua for when you feel stuck or overwhelmed:
ุงููููููู ูู ูุงู ุณููููู ุฅููุงูู ู ูุง ุฌูุนูููุชููู ุณููููุงู ููุฃูููุชู ุชูุฌูุนููู ุงููุญูุฒููู ุฅูุฐูุง ุดูุฆูุชู ุณููููุงู
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'al al-hazna idha shi'ta sahla.
"O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make difficulty easy if You will." โ (Ibn Hibban 974)
This dua is perfect for that moment during the exam when a question feels impossible. Pause. Say it silently. Then try again.
The Story Behind It
Think about Musa's situation. He was not walking into a classroom โ he was walking into the palace of the most powerful tyrant on earth, a man who had enslaved his entire people. If anyone had a reason to feel anxious and overwhelmed, it was him.
And what did he ask for? Not for Pharaoh to disappear. Not for the problem to go away. He asked for three things: confidence (expand my chest), ease (make my task easy), and clarity (untie the knot from my tongue).
That is exactly what you need in an exam. You need the confidence to trust your preparation. You need Allah to make the questions feel manageable. And you need clarity โ the ability to express what you know coherently on paper.
Musa did not skip preparation. He spent years being trained by Allah โ from his childhood in Pharaoh's palace to his time in Madyan. The dua came after the preparation, not instead of it.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Study Life
This is the section that matters most. Knowing a dua is one thing. Making it a habit that transforms your entire approach to studying is another.
Before you study:
- Open your study session with Bismillah and the dua of Musa (20:25-28)
- Set a clear niyyah (intention): "I am studying to fulfill my responsibility as a Muslim to seek knowledge and to use it for good"
- This 30-second ritual changes the energy of your entire session
During study breaks:
- Every 45-60 minutes, take a 5-minute break
- Use the break for a quick dhikr: 10x SubhanAllah, 10x Alhamdulillah, 10x Allahu Akbar
- This resets your focus better than scrolling through your phone
The night before the exam:
- Pray two rak'ahs of salat al-hajah (prayer of need) and make specific dua for your exam
- Recite Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, and the dua of Musa
- Sleep early โ the Prophet (peace be upon him) disliked staying up after Isha without good reason (Sahih al-Bukhari 568)
Morning of the exam:
- Pray Fajr on time โ this is non-negotiable
- Recite your morning adhkar including the dua for leaving the house:
ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ุชููููููููุชู ุนูููู ุงูููููู ูููุงู ุญููููู ูููุงู ูููููุฉู ุฅููุงูู ุจูุงูููููู
"In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah." โ (Sunan Abu Dawud 5095)
Build a streak. If you have three exams this week, make the dua before each one. Track it. After your exam season is over, do not stop โ carry the habit into your daily routine.

Rabbi zidni 'ilma.
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge." โ (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114)
Short, powerful, and directly from the Quran. Say it daily โ not just during exam season.

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, and from inability and laziness." โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369)
If exam anxiety is overwhelming you, this dua specifically addresses worry, sadness, inability, and laziness โ the four enemies of every student.
After completing the exam:
Say Alhamdulillah (all praise is due to Allah) regardless of how you think it went. The result is in Allah's hands. Your job was to prepare and make dua. You did both. Trust the process.
Common Questions
I made dua but I still failed my last exam. Why?
Dua is not a vending machine. Allah answers every dua, but sometimes the answer is "not yet," "not this way," or "I have something better for you." Maybe that failure redirected you toward a better path. Maybe it taught you a study skill you were missing. Trust Allah's wisdom even when the result hurts. And keep making dua โ persistence is part of the test.
Can I make dua in English during the exam?
Yes. While Arabic duas carry special weight because they are the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Quran, you can absolutely make dua in any language. Allah understands all languages. During an exam, a sincere "Ya Allah, please help me remember" in English is completely valid.
Should I make dua for a specific grade?
You can ask for a specific outcome, but the best approach is to ask for what is good for you. Say: "O Allah, grant me success in this exam, and if this outcome is good for my deen and my dunya, make it easy for me." This covers both your worldly goals and your spiritual wellbeing.
My friend does not study and just "relies on dua." Is that right?
No. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked by a man whether he should tie his camel or trust in Allah. He responded: "Tie it and trust in Allah" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2517). Dua without effort is wishful thinking, not faith. Study hard. Prepare thoroughly. Then make dua asking Allah to bless your effort.
Closing
Exams are temporary. The habit of turning to Allah in every situation โ that is permanent. Use this exam season to build a dua practice that stays with you long after the grades are posted.
Start tonight. Open your books with Bismillah. Study with focus. Close with the dua of Musa. And walk into that exam hall knowing that the Creator of your brain, your memory, and the entire universe is with you.
You are not alone in that exam room. You never were.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best dua to recite before an exam?
One of the most powerful duas before an exam is the dua of Musa (peace be upon him): Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri โ O my Lord, expand my chest and ease my affair (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:25-26). This dua asks Allah for confidence, calmness, and ease โ exactly what you need before sitting down to write an exam.
Can I make dua during the exam itself?
Absolutely. You can make silent dua at any time, including during the exam. If you get stuck on a question, pause and say Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla โ O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy. There is no requirement for wudu or a specific position. Sincere dua from the heart is accepted anywhere.
Does making dua mean I do not need to study?
No. Islam teaches tying your camel AND trusting in Allah (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2517). Dua without effort is wishful thinking. Study hard, prepare thoroughly, and then make dua asking Allah to bless your effort. The dua is not a replacement for preparation โ it is the spiritual completion of it.
When is the best time to make dua for exam success?
The most powerful times for dua include: the last third of the night (tahajjud time), between the adhan and iqamah, while prostrating in salah, on Fridays (especially the last hour before Maghrib), and while fasting. Making dua during these times for your exam increases the likelihood of acceptance.
Is there a specific number of times I should repeat the dua?
There is no mandatory number, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) often made dua three times (Sahih Muslim 1794). Repeating your dua with sincerity shows persistence and earnestness. More important than the count is the quality โ make dua with full focus, genuine need, and trust that Allah will answer.
