In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You finish your salah, say the tasleem, and then โ what happens? For most Muslims, what happens next is the phone.
One of the most valuable five minutes in your day is the time immediately after salah. The Prophet ๏ทบ was deliberate and consistent about what he did in that window. He taught specific adhkar โ remembrances โ to be said after every prayer, and he tied them to real, measurable spiritual benefits.
The adhkar after prayer are not a bonus feature. They are part of how salah is meant to be completed.
Why These Adhkar Matter
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"There is no salah after which a person says: 'SubhanAllah' thirty-three times, 'Alhamdulillah' thirty-three times, and 'Allahu Akbar' thirty-four times โ completing one hundred โ then says: 'La ilaha ill-Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shai'in qadir' โ except that his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea." โ (Sahih Muslim 597)
Read that again. Sins forgiven like the foam of the sea. After every single prayer. This is not a special night of Ramadan โ this is after your Dhuhr prayer at work. After your Asr when you are running errands.
The adhkar after prayer are one of the most efficient acts of worship available to you.
The Core Post-Prayer Adhkar
After completing the tasleem:
1. Istighfar โ three times:
Astaghfirullah
"I seek forgiveness from Allah."
2. The three glorifications โ 33 each:
Subhanallah (x33) โ "Glory be to Allah."
Alhamdulillah (x33) โ "All praise is due to Allah."
Allahu Akbar (x34) โ "Allah is the Greatest."
3. The completion:
"There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs dominion and all praise, and He is over all things capable."
4. Ayatul Kursi โ Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255). The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and Paradise except death." (Authenticated by Ibn Hibban, reported in Al-Nasa'i)
5. The Three Quls โ Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas: Once after Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha. Three times after Fajr and Maghrib.
Why Modern Muslims Skip the Adhkar
The nafs moves fast. The moment salah ends, there is an almost automatic pull toward the phone, toward food, toward the next task. The adhkar feel like they are holding you back.
There is also the speed problem. Many people rush salah itself, and the idea of extending the session feels impossible. The adhkar start feeling like they are for people with more free time.
But here is the reality: the five minutes you spend on adhkar are more protected time than any other five minutes in your day. You just finished standing before Allah. Your heart is in its most receptive state. Those minutes after salah, before the world rushes back in, are uniquely powerful.

How to Make Adhkar a Daily Habit
The single most effective strategy is a physical one: stay on your prayer mat.
The moment you stand up from salah, the momentum breaks. Your body starts moving toward whatever is next. If you stay seated, the adhkar become the natural continuation of the prayer rather than a separate task.
Other strategies that help:
- Learn the adhkar gradually โ start with just the three glorifications and add more over time
- Use your fingers to count rather than looking at a phone counter (keeps focus)
- Attach meaning to each phrase โ say Subhanallah while thinking about one thing you admire about Allah's creation
- Make the Quls the last thing before you stand, as a closing seal on your prayer
Related Practices
The adhkar after prayer connect deeply to other daily remembrance practices. Once you have the post-prayer adhkar established, expanding into morning and evening adhkar extends the same protection across your entire day. You can explore more in our guide to dhikr after salah and tasbih after salah.
The Tasbih of Fatimah โ the 33-33-34 glorification โ is the centrepiece of these adhkar and has its own rich history worth knowing.
Common Questions
Can I do the adhkar while walking away from my prayer mat? You can make dhikr while moving, but the recommended practice is to do the post-prayer adhkar while still seated, facing the qiblah. The focus and presence you bring are part of what gives them their power.
What if I pray at work and cannot stay seated? Even two minutes seated โ the three glorifications and Ayatul Kursi โ is better than nothing. Do what you can and increase gradually as your routine allows.
Do I need to be in wudu for adhkar? Wudu is not required for dhikr, but since you will have just prayed, you will naturally still be in wudu. The state of purity adds to the benefit.
What happens if I am not sure how many times I have said something? Take the lower count and continue. Precision matters, but so does the spirit behind the dhikr. Allah knows your intention.
Five Minutes That Change Everything
Every prayer you complete is an opportunity. The adhkar after prayer are the finishing layer โ the seal that locks in what the salah opened.
Five minutes. Five times a day. That is 25 minutes daily of pure, proven, prophetically taught remembrance of Allah.
You will notice the difference. Not after a month. After a few consistent days.
