In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most of us have a vague awareness that Islamic teaching includes signs of the approaching Day of Judgment. But very few Muslims have sat down and understood specifically what the Prophet ﷺ described — and more importantly, what the right response to those signs is.

This is not a doomsday article. This is an article about how to read your era with clarity and then live more intentionally because of it.

Two Categories of Signs

Islamic scholars divide the ashrat as-sa'ah (signs of the Hour) into two broad categories.

Minor signs (ashrat as-sa'ah al-sughra) are events distributed across time — some fulfilled centuries ago, some fulfilled in recent generations, some still ongoing. They are meant to produce a gradual awareness that Qiyamah is approaching.

Major signs (ashrat as-sa'ah al-kubra) are ten dramatic events that occur in relatively rapid succession near the end. Once the first major sign appears, the others follow. These have not yet appeared, though there is scholarly discussion about whether some preconditions are forming.

Minor Signs Already Among Us

The Prophet ﷺ described dozens of minor signs. Here are some that scholars consistently identify as already fulfilled or currently unfolding:

The Proliferation of Mosques With Little Worship

The Prophet ﷺ described mosques being full of people but empty of real worship — architecturally elaborate but spiritually hollow. This is recognizable in communities where beautiful mosques stand but Friday attendance has collapsed and daily salah is minimal.

The Spread of Ignorance and Withdrawal of Knowledge

"Allah does not take knowledge by removing it from people — but He takes it by taking the scholars."

— (Sahih Bukhari 100, sunnah.com)

When authentic scholars die and are not replaced, and when unqualified people issue religious rulings, that is the withdrawal of knowledge the Prophet described. The Muslim world today navigates this tension between the death of classical scholarship and the rise of social media imams.

Widespread Corruption and Dishonesty

The Prophet ﷺ described a time when al-aminah (trustworthiness) would be lost — when people could no longer be trusted in business, in speech, or in commitments. The normalization of dishonesty in professional and personal life is a recognized minor sign.

Tall Buildings in the Desert

In a famous hadith, a man asked about the signs of the Hour and the Prophet ﷺ mentioned: "When you see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in building tall buildings." (Sahih Muslim 8) The scholars apply this to the rapid construction of skyscrapers in the Gulf region — a development incomprehensible to anyone in the 7th century but specific and accurate today.

Killing Becoming Widespread

The Prophet ﷺ said a time would come when the killer would not know why he killed and the killed would not know why he was killed. Mass violence, terrorism, and the indiscriminate nature of modern warfare reflect this description.

The Major Signs Still to Come

These have not yet appeared but are described in detail by the Prophet ﷺ:

  1. The Dajjal (False Messiah) — the greatest trial humanity will face
  2. The descent of Isa ibn Maryam (AS) — Jesus will return to defeat the Dajjal
  3. Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog) — armies released upon the world
  4. The great smoke — a pervasive smoke that afflicts people
  5. The Beast of the Earth — marking believers and disbelievers
  6. The sun rising from the west — the door of tawbah closes
  7. The three great earthquakes — in the East, West, and Arabian Peninsula
  8. The fire that gathers people — driving humanity toward the assembly point

The most important protection mentioned for the Dajjal era:

مَنْ حَفِظَ عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ مِنْ أَوَّلِ سُورَةِ الْكَهْفِ عُصِمَ مِنَ الدَّجَّالِ

Man hafidha 'ashra ayatin min awwali Surat al-Kahf 'usima min ad-Dajjal

"Whoever memorizes ten ayahs from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal."

— (Sahih Muslim 809, sunnah.com)

This is a direct Prophetic prescription — memorize the first ten or last ten ayahs of Surah Al-Kahf. It is one of the most specific protections the Prophet ﷺ gave against the most dangerous trial.

What the Signs Should Do to You

Here is where most people get the signs of the Last Day wrong. They either fall into morbid obsession — watching the news as an eschatological puzzle — or they dismiss them entirely. Neither is the right response.

The signs are given so that the believer recognizes the era they live in and responds with urgency and intentionality — not with despair.

What is iman describes the lived faith that equips a person to navigate any era, including this one. The minor signs we see around us are not meant to make you anxious — they are meant to make you purposeful.

The specific response the Prophet ﷺ encouraged when signs appear is increased worship:

بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَالِ الصَّالِحَةِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ

Badiru bil-a'malil-saliha fitan ka-qita'il-layl il-mudhim

"Rush to do good deeds before trials that are like pieces of a dark night."

— (Sahih Muslim 118, sunnah.com)

Rush. Not worry. Not obsess. Rush to do good deeds.

How to Respond to the Era We Live In

Build Consistency Now, Not Later

The trials of the Last Day are designed to make worship difficult. The Dajjal era specifically will be a time when holding onto faith will require extraordinary commitment. The time to build that commitment is not when the trials arrive — it is now, in the relative ease of your current circumstances.

What is istiqamah in Islam — steadfastness — is the quality the Prophet ﷺ mentioned repeatedly in the context of end-times. Those who remain firm will be those who built the habit of remaining firm long before it was tested.

Memorize the Protections

The Prophet ﷺ gave specific protections for specific signs. Surah Al-Kahf for the Dajjal. The dua of protection from Hellfire after Fajr and Maghrib. The morning and evening adhkar. These are not empty rituals — they are Prophetically prescribed protections for the trials of this era.

Keep Your Connection to Scholars and Community

One of the signs of the Last Day is the isolation of believers. The Prophet ﷺ warned about a time when holding onto faith would be like holding hot coals — and advised staying with the community of Muslims. Your connection to authentic scholarship and to a community of practice is not optional. It is protective.

Make Tawbah a Daily Practice

The sun will rise from the west — and when it does, the door of tawbah closes permanently. Before that Day, the door is open. The most urgent use of the time you have is to use that door consistently, to not let sins accumulate, and to come back to Allah after every stumble without delay.

Common Questions

Should I be preparing for the Dajjal specifically?

Yes, in the sense of building the practices the Prophet ﷺ prescribed: memorizing the first and last ten ayahs of Surah Al-Kahf, maintaining salah and dhikr, avoiding the areas the Dajjal will visit (he will not enter Makkah or Madinah), and building strong iman. You do not need to become a survivalist — the spiritual preparation is the core one.

Are we living in the end times?

Many scholars say we are in the era of the minor signs — an era that began with the Prophet ﷺ himself, who described himself as being sent when the time of the Hour was like this (holding up two fingers close together). Whether the major signs will come in our lifetime, in our children's lifetime, or in a generation far future is known only to Allah.

What is the best dua to say in response to the signs of the Last Day?

The Prophet ﷺ taught a specific dua for the approach of the Day:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min fitnatil-masih ad-dajjal wa min 'adhab il-qabr wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death."

— (Sahih Bukhari 1377, sunnah.com)

Say it after every prayer's tashahhud. It is not superstition — it is direct Prophetic guidance.

The Right Relationship With End-Times Knowledge

What is taqwa in Islam is ultimately what the signs are calling you toward. Not fear of specific events. Not obsessive reading of prophetic timelines. But the constant consciousness of Allah — the awareness that this life is short, that it is moving toward its end, and that what you do today matters in ways you cannot fully see.

The signs of the Last Day are not there to terrify you. They are there to wake you up. And the right response to being awake is not to panic — it is to get to work on the things that matter most.

Respond to the Signs With Daily Action, Not Just Awareness

The Prophet said to rush toward good deeds before the trials arrive. DeenBack helps you build the consistent daily worship that constitutes that rush — one habit at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many signs of the Last Day are there?

Islamic scholars have catalogued over 100 signs from the Quran and authentic hadith — divided into minor signs (ashrat as-saa'ah al-sughra) and major signs (ashrat as-saa'ah al-kubra). Minor signs are spread across time, many already fulfilled, others ongoing. The major signs are ten events that occur in rapid succession near the end: the Dajjal, the descent of Isa (AS), Gog and Magog, the great smoke, the Beast of the Earth, the sun rising from the west, three massive earthquakes, and the fire that gathers people.

Have any signs already been fulfilled?

Yes — many minor signs described by the Prophet ﷺ have been fulfilled. The death of the Prophet himself was listed as a sign. The conquest of Jerusalem, the Arabian peninsula returning to rivers and gardens (the greening of the Arabian desert due to rainfall changes), the proliferation of tall buildings in formerly desert lands (notably the Gulf region), widespread moral corruption, and the spread of knowledge followed by its withdrawal — all described centuries ago, all recognizable today.

Does knowing the signs help you predict the exact time?

No — and that is deliberate. The Prophet ﷺ explicitly stated that no one knows the exact time of the Hour except Allah. The signs are given not for prediction but for preparation. Each sign that appears is meant to shake the believer out of complacency. Trying to calculate the exact date of Qiyamah is a misuse of this knowledge; using it to fuel urgency in worship is the right use.

What is the Dajjal and when will he appear?

Al-Masih ad-Dajjal (the False Messiah) is the most dangerous major sign — a figure who will appear with extraordinary abilities and claim divine status, deceiving much of humanity. His appearance is one of the major signs that mark the final phase of world history before Qiyamah. The Prophet ﷺ warned about him more extensively than any other sign and prescribed specific protections: memorizing the first and last ten ayahs of Surah Al-Kahf.

Should Muslims be afraid of the signs?

Fear is not the right response — urgency is. The signs are given so that the believer recognizes that time is not infinite and that the preparation required is the preparation of a lifetime: consistent worship, sincere faith, good character, and regular tawbah. The Prophet ﷺ did not describe the signs to frighten his ummah into despair. He described them so they would understand their era and respond to it with increased sincerity and commitment.
