In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

If you only had a few minutes of Quran to recite each day, the Prophet ๏ทบ essentially told you which ones to prioritize. He recited three surahs โ Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas โ morning, evening, and before sleep, every single day. He described them as sufficient protection against everything.
These are not surahs to check off a list. They are daily spiritual armor.
What the Quran and Sunnah Actually Say About These Three
The Prophet ๏ทบ said to one of his Companions:
"Recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad and the two Mu'awwidhatayn (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) three times in the morning and the evening โ they will suffice you against everything."
โ (Abu Dawud 5082, Tirmidhi 3575 โ sahih)
He also described Al-Ikhlas:
"Is any one of you unable to recite one-third of the Quran in a night? Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad is equivalent to one-third of the Quran."
โ (Sahih Muslim 811)
This is extraordinary. A surah that takes 15 seconds to recite carries the weight of one-third of the entire Quran. The Prophet explained this by noting that the Quran has three primary themes: tawhid (the oneness of Allah) โ which Al-Ikhlas covers completely โ plus stories of prophets and rulings. One-third of the Quran's themes in a few verses.
Aisha ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููุง reported that every night before sleeping, the Prophet ๏ทบ would cup his hands, blow into them, recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas into them, then wipe his hands over his body as far as they could reach โ starting with his head, face, and front of his body โ doing this three times. (Sahih Bukhari 5017)
When he was ill, he would ask Aisha to do this for him.
The Three Surahs, Their Meaning and Protection
Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) โ The Surah of Sincerity
Qul huwa Allahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
"Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient Sustainer. He neither begets nor is He begotten. And there is nothing comparable to Him."
This surah is pure theology. It dismantles every form of shirk: Allah has no child, no parents, no equal. Reciting it consistently is an act of affirming tawhid โ and that affirmation is the foundation of all protection.
Surah Al-Falaq (113) โ Protection From Created Harms
ูููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูุฑูุจูู ุงูููููููู...
"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of darkness when it descends, from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of the envier when he envies."
This surah seeks protection from: general creation, darkness, black magic (blowing on knots), and the evil eye and envy. It covers external spiritual threats.
Surah An-Nas (114) โ Protection From Internal Whispers
ูููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูุฑูุจูู ุงููููุงุณู...
"Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws โ who whispers in the breasts of mankind โ from among jinn and mankind."
This surah focuses on waswas โ the whispering of Shaytฤn into the heart. The threat it addresses is internal: the subtle suggestions, the doubts, the impulses toward wrong that originate from Shaytฤn and from the nafs.
Together, they cover: the theological (Al-Ikhlas), the external (Al-Falaq), and the internal (An-Nas). A complete circle of protection.
How to Make This a Daily Habit
The Sunnah specifies three moments. Here is how to lock each in:
After every obligatory prayer โ once each. This is probably the easiest insertion. You already have a pause after prayer. Add three short surahs (combined: under 60 seconds) before getting up from your spot. See benefits of reading the 3 quls for additional context on what this daily practice does spiritually.
After Fajr and Maghrib specifically โ three times each. These two prayers mark the transition points between day and night โ the most spiritually significant moments for protection. Many Muslims recite morning and evening adhkar at these times. Embed the three surahs into that routine. See how to do morning adhkar for the full morning sequence.
Before sleeping โ three times, with the hand-wipe practice. Cup your hands, recite each surah three times, blow into your hands, wipe them over your body starting from your head. This is not ritual for ritual's sake โ it is the practice of a man (the Prophet ๏ทบ) who knew exactly what spiritual threats arise in the night.

Why This Particularly Matters Now
The surah An-Nas addresses waswas โ whispering. We live in an age that has perfected the delivery of whispering at scale. Social media feeds, notifications, advertisements โ all designed to whisper suggestions into your mind and heart constantly. The nafs was already susceptible before the phone existed. It is under unprecedented pressure now.
The three surahs are not a superstition or a lucky charm. They are a daily recalibration โ a reminder that your refuge is with Allah, not with your own strength, not with the barriers you build, not with any created thing. Seeking Allah's protection through His words is the most direct act of tawakkul available.
Common Questions
Should I recite these surahs in Arabic if I do not speak Arabic? Yes, recite them in Arabic โ the Sunnah is specifically to recite the Quranic words. Learning the pronunciation takes only a few hours for short surahs. Simultaneously learn the meaning in your language so the words affect your heart.
Can I recite these surahs for someone else who is ill? Yes. The practice of reciting over an ill person (ruqyah) is Sunnah. Recite the surahs and blow over the person, or recite and wipe your hands over their body as the Prophet did when he was ill. See dua for a sick person for additional supplications.
What if I forget to recite them at a specific time? Recite them whenever you remember. The specific times are sunnah for maximum benefit, but any time you recite them has value. Do not skip entirely because you missed the optimal time.
Do these surahs protect against the evil eye? Yes โ Al-Falaq explicitly mentions protection from "the evil of the envier when he envies." The three surahs are part of recommended ruqyah for those affected by the evil eye. See dua for evil eye for a comprehensive approach.
The Armor Is Already in Your Hand
The three surahs take less than 90 seconds to recite. The Prophet ๏ทบ did this every single day of his life. He called them sufficient protection against everything. He recited them when he was healthy and asked others to recite them when he was ill.
You already know most of these surahs from salah. The gap is not knowledge โ it is making the practice deliberate rather than occasional.
Tonight, before sleep. Three times each. Hands cupped. Eyes closed. Ask Allah for protection and mean it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the last 3 surahs of the Quran?
The last three surahs are Surah Al-Ikhlas (112), Surah Al-Falaq (113), and Surah An-Nas (114). Together they are known as the three Quls โ each begins with the command Qul (Say).
What is the benefit of reading the last 3 surahs?
Reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas three times each after Fajr and Maghrib protects a person for the day and night respectively. The Prophet said: 'They will suffice you against everything.' Al-Ikhlas alone equals one-third of the Quran in reward.
When should I read the last 3 surahs of the Quran?
After every obligatory prayer (once). After Fajr and Maghrib (three times each). Before sleeping โ the Prophet would cup his hands, blow into them, and wipe them over his body after reciting all three. This is also done when ill.
How many times should I read the 3 quls?
Once after each of the five daily prayers. Three times after Fajr and Maghrib specifically. Three times before sleeping. The Prophet said those who recite them three times after Fajr and Maghrib will be protected from everything that day and night.
Does Surah Al-Ikhlas equal one-third of the Quran?
Yes. The Prophet said: 'Is any one of you unable to recite one-third of the Quran in a night? ... Qul huwa Allahu ahad equals one-third of the Quran.' (Sahih Muslim 811) This is because it covers the theme of Allah's nature (tawhid), while other thirds cover stories and rulings.
