In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Microblading has become one of the most sought-after beauty procedures of the last decade โ hair-stroke patterns tattooed onto the skin above the eye to create the appearance of full, shaped brows. For many women, it seems like the perfect solution to sparse or uneven eyebrows. But for a Muslim, the question is unavoidable: is this actually permissible?
The Quick Answer
Microblading is haram according to the vast majority of scholars. It falls under two clear prohibitions in the same hadith:
"Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) cursed the woman who practices tattooing and the one who has it done, the woman who removes eyebrow hair and the one who has it done." โ Sahih al-Bukhari 5931, Sahih Muslim 2125
Microblading is both tattooing and eyebrow alteration โ it hits both prohibitions simultaneously.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
The prohibition on tattooing in Islam is one of the clearest in Islamic texts. The Prophet (peace be upon him) specifically cursed both the one who tattoos and the one who receives a tattoo. The reasoning connects to the Quranic principle: Shaytan declared his intention to lead humans to alter the creation of Allah (Quran 4:119).
Microblading works by using a hand tool to create tiny cuts in the skin and deposit pigment โ a process that is, technically and anatomically, tattooing. The fact that the pigment is placed more shallowly than a traditional tattoo (in the upper layers of the dermis rather than deeper) and fades over time does not change the essential action: foreign pigment is being inserted under the skin.
The second element is the eyebrow alteration. The hadith specifically prohibits the woman who shapes or removes eyebrow hair (al-namisah). Microblading is designed to reshape the appearance of the brows โ it typically involves first removing or shaping the existing eyebrow hair and then tattooing the new shape.
When two independent prohibitions apply to the same procedure, there is no remaining scholarly ambiguity. The ruling is clear: haram.
Why This Is Actually Hard
Microblading is particularly difficult to step back from because sparse or uneven eyebrows are one of those physical features that cause genuine daily discomfort for many women. It is not abstract vanity โ it is the experience of feeling self-conscious every time you look in the mirror or leave the house without makeup.
Your nafs will have arguments: it fades, it is not a real tattoo, it just fills in what was already there, I cannot leave the house without drawing them in anyway, this would just save time. These arguments feel practical, not vain. That is what makes them persuasive.
The harder truth is that the desire for microblading is often downstream of a larger issue: deep discomfort with a physical feature that Allah gave you. Islam's response to this is not to tell you the discomfort is invalid โ it is to offer a path toward accepting and finding peace with what you were given, while working within halal means to address what you can.
What to Do โ Practical Steps
1. Use Halal Brow Products Effectively
The permissible alternative to microblading is learning to use eyebrow makeup skillfully. This is genuinely effective. Modern brow products โ pencils, powders, tinted gels, pomades โ can create very natural-looking results that are indistinguishable from microblading to most observers.
Learning to do your brows well takes maybe a week of practice. Tutorials are widely available. This is not a consolation prize โ many professional makeup artists argue that pencil brows look better than microblading because they can be adjusted daily to match your face.
2. Consider Eyebrow Tinting
If your issue is sparse, light-coloured brow hairs, eyebrow tinting can darken your existing hairs to make them appear fuller and more defined. This dyes the hairs without altering the skin structure. Most scholars consider this permissible.
3. Support Natural Brow Growth
Castor oil applied nightly is widely reported to support eyebrow hair growth over several months. If your brows are sparse, addressing the root cause โ nutrition, hormonal health, stopping any over-plucking โ may help naturally.
4. Examine the Root Issue
If you feel that you genuinely cannot leave the house without brow makeup and the thought of sparse brows causes significant distress, this is worth addressing directly โ through dhikr, dua, and perhaps talking to someone you trust. Islam calls us to care for our appearance within limits, but not to be controlled by it.

Dua for Accepting What Allah Created
When the dissatisfaction with your appearance feels overwhelming:
ุงููููููู ูู ููู ูุง ุญูุณููููุชู ุฎูููููู ููุญูุณูููู ุฎูููููู
Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa-hassin khuluqi
"O Allah, just as You have made my appearance beautiful, make my character beautiful too." โ Musnad Ahmad 3527
Say this when you are getting ready in the morning. It is a reorientation: Allah already made you beautiful. You are asking for the inner beauty that matters most.
Common Questions
What if I want to have my microblading removed?
If microblading removal is easy and not physically harmful, having it removed is the better choice. Laser removal is available for semi-permanent brow tattoos, though it takes multiple sessions. If removal is too expensive or medically inadvisable, the guidance is sincere tawbah and not renewing the procedure.
Is ombre powder brows different from microblading?
Ombre powder brows (also called powder brows or shading) uses a machine to deposit a diffuse layer of pigment into the skin, creating a powdery brow effect rather than hair strokes. It is still inserting pigment under the skin โ still tattooing โ and therefore still falls under the same prohibition as microblading.
What about henna brows?
Henna applied to the skin as a stain (not inserted under the skin) is a surface application and does not fall under tattooing. Many scholars consider henna on the skin permissible. This is a different category from microblading. Temporary henna brow stains are generally considered halal.
Is it haram to watch microblading tutorials?
Watching tutorials is a different matter from having the procedure done. Knowledge of prohibited procedures is not itself prohibited. The prohibition is on the action, not on understanding how it works.
Closing
Microblading sits clearly in the prohibited category โ two distinct prophetic prohibitions cover the same procedure. The semi-permanent nature does not create an exception, and the popularity of the procedure in modern culture does not change the ruling.
What Islam offers instead is more sustainable: permission to use makeup, to tint and groom within limits, and to find peace with the features that Allah gave you. The eyebrows you were born with are part of a form that the Quran calls beautiful: "We have certainly created man in the best of stature." (Quran 95:4)
That includes yours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is microblading haram in Islam?
Yes, microblading is considered haram by the vast majority of scholars. It involves two prohibited practices: tattooing (injecting pigment under the skin) and altering the eyebrows. Both are explicitly prohibited in authentic hadith. The semi-permanent nature does not change the ruling.
Why is microblading haram if it is only semi-permanent?
The prohibition on tattooing in Islam does not depend on whether the tattoo is permanent or semi-permanent. Microblading involves inserting pigment under the skin, which is the defining characteristic of tattooing. The fact that it fades over 1-2 years does not remove it from the prohibited category.
What is the difference between microblading and drawing on eyebrows with a pencil?
Drawing on eyebrows with a pencil or brow product is a form of makeup โ it sits on the surface of the skin and is removed with cleansing. This is generally permissible. Microblading inserts pigment under the skin's surface, making it a form of tattooing, which is prohibited.
What if I had microblading done before I knew it was haram?
What is done is done, and tawbah (repentance) is always open. You cannot reverse microblading easily โ removal is expensive and painful. The Islamic guidance for an existing tattoo or semi-permanent procedure is to make sincere tawbah, not have it removed unless it is easy and harmless to do so, and not renew it going forward.
Are eyebrow tinting or henna brows permissible?
Eyebrow tinting (dyeing the eyebrow hairs with semi-permanent dye) and henna applied to eyebrow hair are generally considered permissible since they do not alter the structure of the eyebrows or insert anything under the skin. These are surface-level colour applications. Henna on the skin near brows (not the actual follicles) may require more careful consideration.
