In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You want to look neat. You want to feel put-together. And your eyebrows are right there, easy to shape, a small thing that makes a real difference in how you present yourself. So when you hear that plucking eyebrows might be haram, your first reaction might be disbelief โ surely this is an overreaction to something so minor?
It is not minor. And the evidence is more direct than you might expect.
The Quick Answer
Plucking eyebrows is prohibited according to the majority of Islamic scholars, based on an explicit and authentic hadith. This is one of the clearer rulings in the books โ not a grey area with scholarly debate about weak evidence, but a direct statement from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that is recorded in both Bukhari and Muslim.
The nuance that scholars debate is not whether the ruling exists, but what exactly it covers: Does it apply to removing a unibrow? To trimming excessive length? To medical situations? These edge cases are where scholarly opinions diverge.
"Allah has cursed the women who do tattoos and those who have them done, the women who pluck eyebrows (al-namisah) and those who have it done, and those who file their teeth for beauty, changing what Allah has created." โ Sahih al-Bukhari 5931, Sahih Muslim 2125
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
The hadith above is the foundation. Al-namisah (ุงููููุงู ูุตูุฉ) refers to one who plucks eyebrows. The word comes from the Arabic root meaning to pluck or remove, and classical scholars interpreted it as removing eyebrow hairs to reshape the brow for cosmetic purposes.
The Quran provides the underlying principle that scholars apply here:
"I will command them and they will change Allah's creation." โ Quran 4:119
This verse describes Shaytan's intentions โ to lead people to alter what Allah created. The hadith applies this principle concretely. The Prophet (peace be upon him) named several specific practices in one narration: tattooing, eyebrow plucking, filing teeth โ all described as changing Allah's creation.
The fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used the word "cursed" (la'ana) is significant. This language is used for major prohibitions in the Sunnah โ it signals that this is not a mild dislike but a serious warning.
Some scholars also note the following hadith for context:
"There is no harm in removing hair from the face, except the eyebrows and the head." โ This narration, while sometimes cited, is considered weak by hadith scholars, and the authentic hadith in Bukhari and Muslim is the governing evidence.
Why This Is Actually Hard
Here is the real struggle: you live in a world where eyebrow grooming is completely normalised. Beauty tutorials, social media standards, the makeup aisle at every store โ all built on the assumption that shaping eyebrows is not just normal but necessary for looking presentable.
When you tell a Muslim woman that her eyebrows are fine as they are, the response is often visceral: but they're unruly, or uneven, or I just want to clean them up a little. The nafs has a very reasonable-sounding voice here: it's such a small thing, who does it actually hurt, why would Allah care about this?
The answer to that last question is that Islam is teaching you something specific through this ruling: your body, as Allah created it, is sufficient. You do not need to alter your creation to be acceptable, beautiful, or worthy of love. That is a message that directly confronts what the beauty industry spends billions of dollars convincing you otherwise.
For some women, the pressure comes from outside โ comments from family members, expectations from a spouse, the sense that natural eyebrows are somehow unkempt. This social dimension makes the ruling harder, but it does not change it.
What to Do โ Practical Steps
1. Understand What the Ruling Actually Covers
The prohibition centres on removing and reshaping eyebrow hairs for cosmetic purposes. Most scholars specify that:
- The area between the eyebrows (removing a unibrow): many contemporary scholars permit this because the hadith specifically concerns the eyebrows themselves, not hair between them. However, stricter scholars include this area
- Trimming excessive length (trimming hairs that grow unusually long): some scholars permit trimming without reshaping
- Medical removal (removing eyebrow hairs due to a skin condition or medical necessity): necessity creates an exception
The clearest prohibition: reshaping your eyebrows โ plucking the bottom or top of the arch to create a particular shape, thinning them out, or defining them cosmetically.
2. Replace the Habit With Halal Alternatives
If eyebrow grooming has been part of your routine, redirecting is more effective than simply stopping. Focus on what you can do: styling eyebrow hairs into shape with a brow gel or spoolie (no removal), using brow products to fill and define without removing hairs, and investing in skincare and presentation in areas where no prohibition applies.
You can look beautiful and well-presented without crossing this specific line.
3. Be Honest With Yourself About Motivation
The Islamic question here is about why. If the answer is "to meet a beauty standard imposed by social media," that is a conversation worth having with yourself. Islam does not prohibit wanting to look good โ the Prophet (peace be upon him) said "Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty" โ but it does call you to evaluate whose standard you are trying to meet.
4. Have the Conversation With Your Spouse Wisely
If a spouse has expectations about your appearance, this conversation is necessary. Most scholars agree that a wife is not obligated to do something haram to please her husband. A loving explanation โ "This is something I believe is prohibited for me" โ is the appropriate response. Common Questions
What if I already plucked my eyebrows โ do I need to do something specific?
Make sincere tawbah (repentance) โ acknowledge it, ask Allah's forgiveness, and commit to changing going forward. Past actions that have already occurred cannot be undone physically. The ruling concerns what you do from this point forward.
Are eyebrow tints or dyes prohibited?
Colouring the eyebrow hairs, without removing or reshaping them, is a separate question. Most scholars do not include dyeing in the eyebrow plucking prohibition, as it does not involve removing or reshaping what Allah created. The concerns about dyeing hair apply separately.
My eyebrows are very thick and I feel uncomfortable โ can I trim them?
The ruling on trimming for comfort rather than cosmetic reshaping is debated. Some scholars permit trimming hairs that have grown unusually long or that cause genuine discomfort. Others maintain that any intentional alteration falls under the prohibition. Seeking a scholar's opinion on your specific situation is the recommended approach for edge cases.
Is microblading or eyebrow tattooing covered by the same prohibition?
Microblading โ which involves drawing or tattooing eyebrow hairs onto the skin โ is covered by the related prohibition on tattooing mentioned in the same hadith. This is more clearly prohibited, as it involves both tattooing and altering the appearance of the eyebrow area. Closing
The eyebrow ruling is one of those places where Islam asks you to trust that your natural creation is sufficient. That is countercultural in the deepest sense โ in a world that sells you the idea that your face needs constant improvement, Islam says: you were made, and what was made is enough.
This is not about appearance. It is about whose standard you are orienting your life around.
You do not need to change what Allah created to be beautiful. You need to use what you have with gratitude, with care, and within the limits He has set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is plucking eyebrows haram for women in Islam?
The majority of classical scholars consider plucking eyebrows haram based on the authentic hadith in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed the al-namisah โ the woman who plucks eyebrows for others โ and the woman who has it done. This is understood as removing or significantly altering the natural shape. Trimming stray hairs or removing hairs between the eyebrows (the unibrow area) is viewed more leniently by some scholars.
Is it haram to trim eyebrows without fully plucking them?
Scholars differ here. The stricter view holds that any alteration is covered by the hadith's prohibition. The more common contemporary view distinguishes between removing a unibrow (which some scholars permit) and reshaping the eyebrows entirely (which remains prohibited). Trimming for cleanliness rather than cosmetic reshaping also falls in a more lenient category.
Is the ruling on plucking eyebrows the same for men?
The hadith mentions women specifically, but the principle of altering Allah's creation applies generally. Most scholars apply the eyebrow prohibition to women's cosmetic practices. For men, removing a unibrow is generally viewed as permissible. Shaping or arching eyebrows for cosmetic reasons would be viewed with the same concern.
Can I pluck eyebrows for my husband if he requests it?
Scholars differ. Some hold that marriage gives a wife permission to alter her appearance for her husband's pleasure. Others maintain the hadith's curse applies regardless of the reason. The majority view does not grant a blanket exception for marital context when it comes to this specific action.
What about threading or waxing versus plucking โ is there a difference?
The method of hair removal (plucking, threading, waxing, laser) does not change the ruling. The hadith concerns the action of removing or reshaping eyebrow hairs, not the tool used to do it. If plucking is prohibited, so is waxing or threading for the same purpose.
