In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Most questions about what is haram fall into grey areas โ€” scholarly differences, conditions, context-dependent rulings. Magic is not one of those questions. On sihr โ€” magic in the Islamic sense, involving actual occult practices โ€” the scholars are unanimous, the evidence is explicit, and the warning is severe.

But the question comes up in different ways. You might be asking about stage magic as entertainment. You might be asking because someone you trust seems involved in practices that worry you. Or you might be asking because you suspect you have been affected by sihr and you want to know what to do. Let us address all of these clearly.

The Quick Answer

Magic โ€” sihr โ€” is among the seven major destructive sins in Islam. The Prophet ๏ทบ was explicit. Practicing it, learning it, or seeking it out is prohibited without scholarly disagreement.

"Avoid the seven destructive sins." They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what are they?" He said: "Associating partners with Allah, and magic (sihr)..."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2766)

Shirk and sihr are listed first and second. That placement is not coincidental โ€” magic is directly connected to shirk because effective sihr typically involves association with jinn or other than Allah. The foundation of the prohibition is theological.

What the Quran and Sunnah Say

The Quran directly addresses magic in multiple places. Most strikingly, in Surah Al-Baqarah, it describes the magic taught by the two angels Harut and Marut โ€” and makes clear that this was a test and a corruption:

"They did not teach anyone unless saying: 'We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.'"

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:102)

The verse calls learning magic "disbelieving." Not just sinful โ€” kufr. This is the strongest language available in the Quran.

The Quran also confirms that magic is real and can harm:

ูˆูŽู…ูู† ุดูŽุฑูู‘ ุงู„ู†ูŽู‘ููŽู‘ุงุซูŽุงุชู ูููŠ ุงู„ู’ุนูู‚ูŽุฏู

"And from the evil of those who blow on knots."

(Surah Al-Falaq, 113:4)

"Those who blow on knots" refers to practitioners of sihr. The Prophet ๏ทบ himself was affected by sihr and was cured through Quranic recitation. This is not superstition โ€” the Quran directly acknowledges sihr's reality. The prohibition is therefore not based on disbelief in magic's effect, but on its source and what engaging with it requires spiritually.

Why This Is Actually Hard

For most people, "is magic haram?" feels like an obvious question with an obvious answer. But the complexity appears at the edges:

When you are in pain and someone offers a "solution." People turn to practitioners of sihr most often when they are desperate โ€” a divorce, an illness that doctors cannot cure, a business failure, a relationship crisis. In that vulnerability, someone who claims they can fix things through sihr becomes tempting. The nafs in distress will accept solutions it would reject when calm.

When it is cultural and familial. In some communities, consulting practitioners of sihr for protection, for love, for resolving disputes โ€” is normalized and even considered religiously acceptable. When your family does something, questioning it feels like questioning them. The social cost of taking the Islamic position can be real.

When curiosity meets availability. Magic content is everywhere online โ€” TikTok witchcraft communities, manifestation practices, spell tutorials. The casual framing makes it feel harmless. It does not feel like the serious spiritual terrain it actually is.

What to Do About It โ€” Practical Steps

Step 1: If you have engaged with magic or practitioners of it โ€” make tawbah now. Not tomorrow. Sincere repentance, genuine remorse, stopping completely, and firm intention not to return. There is no situation in which continuing is the better option. The door of tawbah is always open, and this sin like any other is forgiven by sincere repentance.

Step 2: If you suspect you are the victim of sihr โ€” use Islamic means only. The prohibited response to sihr is countering it with sihr. The Islamic response is:

  • Recite Ayat al-Kursi after every prayer and before sleep
  • Recite the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) three times morning and evening
  • Maintain all five daily prayers โ€” the connection with Allah is the strongest protection
  • Seek out a trustworthy practitioner of Islamic ruqyah โ€” Quranic recitation and authentic dua for healing

See dua for protection and dua for evil eye for the specific duas recommended for protection from spiritual harm.

Step 3: Protect your children and household through the morning and evening adhkar. The Prophet ๏ทบ taught specific adhkar for protection:

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa huwa-s-sami'ul-'alim

"In the name of Allah with whose name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the sky, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing."

(Sunan Abu Dawud 5088)

Reciting this three times in the morning and evening is among the most established protective practices in the Sunnah.

Step 4: Do not facilitate others' engagement with magic. If a family member or friend is consulting practitioners of sihr, your response should be counsel and dua โ€” not silence out of social comfort. Your responsibility as a Muslim includes gentle nasiha (sincere advice) to those you care about.

Dua for Protection From All Harm

The Mu'awwidhatayn โ€” Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas โ€” are the most specific duas for protection from sihr, jinn, evil eye, and all spiritual harm. The Prophet ๏ทบ said there is nothing comparable to them for seeking protection:

ู‚ูู„ู’ ุฃูŽุนููˆุฐู ุจูุฑูŽุจูู‘ ุงู„ู’ููŽู„ูŽู‚ู

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak..."

(Surah Al-Falaq, 113:1)

"Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind..."

(Surah An-Nas, 114:1)

Recite these three times each morning and evening. They were recited by the Prophet ๏ทบ himself and are among the most authentic and powerful forms of protection in the Islamic tradition.

Common Questions

What is the difference between sihr and ruqyah?

Sihr involves occult practices that typically require associating with jinn or other prohibited means. Ruqyah is Quranic recitation and prophetic dua specifically for healing and protection. Sihr corrupts; ruqyah heals. Sihr is prohibited; ruqyah is recommended. The simplest test: if a practice involves anything other than Quran, authentic hadith, and clear Islamic dua โ€” it is not ruqyah.

Is learning about magic in an academic context haram?

Studying sihr as a historical, anthropological, or academic subject is generally permitted. The prohibition is on learning to practice, not learning to understand. A scholar of comparative religion who studies magical practices is not violating the prohibition in the same way as someone learning to perform spells.

What if my culture treats magic as protective โ€” like amulets with Quranic verses?

There is a difference between amulets containing Quranic text and those containing sihr, symbols, or non-Quranic inscriptions. Scholars differ on amulets even with Quranic text โ€” with many advising against them to avoid the door to prohibited practices and because the Prophet ๏ทบ himself did not endorse them. For protection, rely on the adhkar rather than physical objects.

If someone used magic on me years ago and I did not know โ€” am I spiritually harmed?

Being subjected to sihr without your knowledge or consent does not carry any sin for you. The sin falls entirely on the practitioner. Your response โ€” seeking ruqyah, maintaining worship, making dua โ€” is the appropriate one, not guilt or self-blame.

For the broader category of prohibited occult practices, see is fortune telling haram and is believing in superstitions haram.

The Strongest Shield Is Already Yours

You do not need to go to any practitioner, visit any website, or learn any special knowledge to protect yourself spiritually. The protection the Prophet ๏ทบ taught is already available to you โ€” through consistent salah, morning and evening adhkar, Ayat al-Kursi, and the Mu'awwidhatayn. It is not complicated. It is consistent.

The nafs looks for exotic solutions. The Sunnah offers simple, daily practice that builds genuine protection over time. That is the path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is magic haram in Islam?

Yes โ€” magic (sihr) is unanimously prohibited in Islam and is listed among the seven major destructive sins (al-mubiqat). The Quran mentions it as something that can harm people. Practicing magic, learning it, or seeking it from practitioners is all prohibited. The prohibition covers all forms: black magic, witchcraft, spells, and rituals intended to harm, control, or alter someone's situation through occult means.

Is watching magic shows or stage performances haram?

Stage magic and illusions performed as entertainment โ€” where the audience understands it is sleight of hand and performance โ€” are not the same as sihr. Many scholars permit watching performance magic that clearly involves human skill and illusion rather than actual occult practice. The concern arises when something appears to involve genuine supernatural manipulation beyond what skill could explain.

What is ruqyah and is it permissible?

Ruqyah is the Islamic practice of reciting specific Quranic verses and authentic duas for healing and protection from spiritual harm including sihr. It is not magic โ€” it is supplication and Quranic recitation as a means of seeking Allah's healing. Ruqyah is not only permissible but recommended by the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) are specifically recited for protection.

If I suspect I am the victim of black magic, what should I do?

Seek ruqyah from a trustworthy practitioner who uses only Quran and authentic duas. Recite Ayat al-Kursi, the Mu'awwidhatayn, and Surah Al-Baqarah regularly. Maintain your five daily prayers and all obligatory worship. Do not seek to counter magic with magic โ€” that is prohibited. The strongest protection against sihr is consistent worship and connection with Allah.

Is seeking out a practitioner of magic to harm someone haram?

Yes โ€” seeking magic to harm another person is prohibited and falls under oppression (dhulm), which Islam treats with extreme seriousness. The harm caused by magic is real according to the Quran and Sunnah, and facilitating it makes you a participant in that harm. Making tawbah and stopping completely is obligatory.
