In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You listen to podcasts during your commute, while cooking, during a run. It has become a significant part of how you consume information and entertainment. And now you are wondering: is any of this actually okay Islamically?

The honest answer is that podcasts are one of the most powerful tools for either growing in your deen or drifting from it โ€” depending entirely on what you listen to and how much.

The Quick Answer

Podcasts are not haram as a format. They are audio content โ€” nothing more. The ruling depends entirely on what the podcast contains.

  • Islamic lectures, Quran discussions, personal development with Islamic principles = not only permissible but recommended
  • Neutral content without haram elements (technology, cooking, sports discussion without foul language) = generally permissible
  • Content with music, vulgarity, backbiting, promotion of haram = haram to consume

The format is a neutral vessel. What you fill it with determines the ruling.

What the Quran and Sunnah Say

The Quran is emphatic about what we allow into our ears and minds:

ูˆูŽุงู„ูŽู‘ุฐููŠู†ูŽ ู‡ูู…ู’ ุนูŽู†ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ุบู’ูˆู ู…ูุนู’ุฑูุถููˆู†ูŽ

"And those who turn away from idle speech." โ€” (Surah Al-Mu'minun, 23:3)

Laghw (idle speech) covers content that is purposeless, trivial, or distracting from what matters. This does not mean all entertainment is forbidden โ€” but it means the purpose and content of what we consume matters to Allah.

The Prophet ๏ทบ gave a general rule that applies directly to media consumption:

"Part of someone's being a good Muslim is his leaving alone that which does not concern him." โ€” (Tirmidhi 2317)

A podcast that is all speculation, celebrity gossip, sports commentary that goes on for hours, or idle discussion fails this test โ€” not necessarily because it contains something explicitly haram, but because it crowds out the beneficial and replaces it with the meaningless.

However, the Prophet ๏ทบ also said:

"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." โ€” (Sunan Ibn Majah 224)

A podcast that teaches โ€” about your profession, about parenting, about Islamic history, about science โ€” serves this obligation. Podcasts are perhaps the most accessible medium for seeking knowledge that has ever existed.

Why This Is Actually Hard

The discomfort many Muslims feel about podcasts comes from a few places.

Background music: most Western podcasts feature intro and outro music, often with instruments. Some have continuous background music. If you hold the position that music with instruments is haram (which many scholars do), then an otherwise excellent podcast with musical intros puts you in an awkward position.

Content drift: you start listening to a business podcast, then a comedy podcast, then a true crime podcast, and before you know it, your entire audio diet is secular entertainment. The drift is gradual enough that you do not notice how far you have traveled.

The missed opportunity: the real cost of filling your commute with non-Islamic content is what you do not listen to. An average commuter who listened to Islamic podcasts or Quran for 30 minutes a day would, over a year, have consumed the equivalent of several full Islamic courses. The opportunity cost is significant.

What to Do โ€” Practical Steps

Step 1: Apply a Content Standard

Before subscribing to or listening to any podcast, run a quick filter:

  • Does it contain music that I believe is prohibited?
  • Does it involve backbiting, gossip, or mockery of Islam?
  • Is the content itself something that would make me embarrassed if Allah heard it?
  • Does it promote things I know to be haram?

If yes to any of the above โ€” skip it.

Step 2: Build an Islamic Podcast Stack First

Before loading up on secular content, build a core list of Islamic podcasts that fill your primary listening time. Search for:

  • Tafsir series from reputable scholars
  • Hadith explanation podcasts
  • Islamic history and seerah series
  • Muslim personal development podcasts that integrate Islamic principles

Once this foundation is in place, secular permissible content can supplement it โ€” not replace it.

Step 3: Handle the Background Music Problem Practically

For podcasts that have brief musical intros or transitions:

  • Keep your thumb near the fast-forward button and skip 15-30 seconds past the intro
  • Many podcast apps allow you to set a skip-intro duration automatically
  • This is a practical workaround that many Muslims find sufficient

For podcasts where music is continuous and integral to the format โ€” find a different podcast on the same topic.

Step 4: Apply Time Limits

The same app time limits that help with social media help here. Decide how much podcast time is reasonable daily โ€” and stick to it. An hour of Islamic podcast time followed by 30 minutes of permissible secular content is a very different pattern from three hours of whatever algorithm recommends next.

Dua When Seeking Knowledge

ุฑูŽู‘ุจูู‘ ุฒูุฏู’ู†ููŠ ุนูู„ู’ู…ู‹ุง

"My Lord, increase me in knowledge." โ€” (Surah Ta-Ha, 20:114)

Say this before starting an Islamic podcast. It transforms listening from passive entertainment into an act of seeking knowledge with intention.

Common Questions

Is it haram to listen to a true crime podcast?

True crime podcasts often involve discussion of murder, abuse, and other dark subjects. The content itself is not necessarily forbidden โ€” understanding human tragedy and injustice has always been part of human discourse. But ask: does this leave me with something beneficial, or does it just fill me with anxiety and morbid fascination? If it is the latter, consider whether that is the best use of your listening time.

What about podcasts that discuss controversial Islamic topics or challenge traditional views?

Be careful. Not every Islamic-sounding podcast represents authentic scholarship. Some podcasts promote views that contradict established Islamic consensus while using Islamic language. Prioritize podcasts from scholars with recognized credentials and established institutions. The fact that something is called an "Islamic podcast" does not guarantee its content is sound.

What is the ruling on background music in podcasts?

See our full analysis of is music haram and are instruments haram for the scholarly framework. The short answer: music with prohibited instruments in the background of an otherwise permissible podcast is still subject to the same ruling as music listened to directly. A podcast that uses singing as part of its format follows the same analysis.

My spouse and I listen to a cooking or parenting podcast together โ€” is that okay?

Absolutely. Permissible content consumed together for practical benefit is fine. Islam does not require that every moment of every day be explicitly religious. A halal family life includes practical knowledge, shared enjoyment of permissible things, and space for the mundane.

Is music in podcasts as serious as listening to music directly?

The ruling on the music is the same regardless of the context it appears in. If the music in a podcast contains what you believe to be prohibited, it is prohibited. Whether it is more or less tempting than listening to music directly is irrelevant to the ruling. See our analysis of is music haram for the full scholarly breakdown.

Your Ears Are an Amanah

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"The eye commits zina, the ear commits zina... and the private part either fulfills or negates all of this." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243)

What you allow into your ears shapes what enters your heart. Consistent exposure to vulgarity, haram content, or even just endless idle entertainment shapes your inner world in ways that affect your relationship with Allah.

Podcasts are one of the most powerful tools available for building your knowledge and character โ€” or for eroding them. Use them intentionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is listening to podcasts haram?

Podcasts are not inherently haram. Like any media, the ruling depends on the content. An Islamic podcast is beneficial; a podcast containing backbiting, music, vulgarity, or promoting haram is not. The format itself is neutral โ€” a vessel that carries whatever content fills it.

What about podcasts with background music?

This is a genuine tension. Many otherwise permissible podcasts feature background music with instruments, which many scholars consider haram. If the music is minimal and incidental, some scholars are lenient. If music is integral to the podcast experience, the stricter position would be to avoid it. You can often mute or skip musical intros and transitions.

Can I listen to non-Islamic podcasts โ€” comedy, business, sports?

Content determines permissibility. A business or personal development podcast that helps you improve your skills and does not contain haram elements is permissible. A comedy podcast full of vulgarity, sexual jokes, or mockery of religion is not. Apply the same judgment you would apply to any conversation.

Is listening to a podcast instead of Quran a wasted opportunity?

This is the wisdom question, not the permissibility question. A Muslim who fills all their commute time with business podcasts and none with Quran or Islamic content may not be doing anything haram โ€” but they may be missing a tremendous opportunity to build their deen. Balance matters.

What are the best Islamic podcasts to listen to?

There are many excellent Islamic podcasts covering Quran tafsir, hadith, personal development, and contemporary fiqh. Look for podcasts by reputable scholars and institutions. Your local mosque or Islamic centre may also have recorded lectures available as podcasts.
