Is Dyeing Your Eyebrows Haram? What Scholars Say

You have seen the eyebrow trends. Tinting, laminating, dyeing, microblading — the eyebrow beauty industry has grown dramatically, and Muslim women (and sometimes men) are asking a fair question: which of these are actually okay Islamically, and which cross a line?

The good news is that the ruling is clearer than you might expect. The key is understanding exactly what is prohibited and why.

The Quick Answer

Temporary eyebrow dyeing and tinting: generally permissible, provided the dye does not create a barrier over the hair that blocks water during wudu, and provided you are not dramatically reshaping the eyebrows through plucking before dyeing.

Permanent eyebrow tattooing (including microblading): the scholarly majority considers this haram, as it falls under the prohibition on tattooing — permanently inserting ink or pigment under the skin.

The distinction that matters is: temporary vs. permanent alteration of what Allah created.

What the Quran and Sunnah Say

The primary evidence scholars cite is a hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim:

لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْوَاشِمَاتِ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَاتِ وَالنَّامِصَاتِ وَالْمُتَنَمِّصَاتِ

La'ana Allahu al-washimat wal-mustawshimat wal-namisat wal-mutanammisat

"Allah has cursed those who do tattooing and those who have it done, and those who pluck eyebrow hairs (to reshape them for beauty) and those who have it done." — (Sahih Bukhari 5931)

Two specific acts appear here:

Al-washm (tattooing): Permanently inserting pigment under the skin. This is why microblading and eyebrow tattooing are considered haram — they are tattooing, regardless of what marketing name is used.

Al-nams (plucking eyebrow hairs): The context of this prohibition, as understood by scholars, is plucking eyebrow hairs specifically to reshape and dramatically alter the natural brows for the sake of beautification. This is about changing Allah's creation in a way that is permanent or semi-permanent.

Neither prohibition is about the color of the eyebrow hair itself.

Why This Is More Nuanced Than It Looks

The nafs often runs toward one of two extremes here: either dismissing all beauty practices as fine ("everyone does it"), or treating every grooming choice as forbidden ("better safe than sorry").

Neither approach serves you. Islam has specific principles, and they apply specifically.

The scholars who have addressed eyebrow dyeing specifically make several points:

Dyeing is not tattooing. When you use eyebrow tint, henna, or brow dye, you are coloring existing hair — the same hair Allah placed there. The hair itself remains. The color washes out. This is structurally the same as dyeing head hair, which is permissible and has Prophetic precedent (the Prophet ﷺ himself and Abu Bakr dyed their hair — Sahih Bukhari 5895).

Shape matters. If you are dyeing your eyebrows without significantly altering their shape, the dyeing itself does not compound the concern about al-nams. If, however, you first heavily pluck or wax to create a dramatically different arch, then fill in with dye — the plucking component is what scholars question.

Wudu validity. Some dyes create a film that sits on top of the hair like a coating, which could prevent water from reaching the hair shaft during wudu. Most modern tints are absorbed into the hair and do not leave a barrier, similar to henna. Verify your specific product.

The Real Struggle Here

Let us be honest about what makes this hard.

Social media beauty standards have made eyebrows a canvas. The "perfect brow" changes season by season. And if your natural eyebrows do not match the current ideal, there is real social pressure to fix them.

The nafs will offer you a series of arguments: it is just temporary, everyone is doing it, no one will judge you, it looks more professional. These are not necessarily wrong arguments — but they can also be the nafs rationalizing away a practice that crosses a line.

The question to ask is not "can I get away with this?" The question is "is this within the permission Allah has given me?" For temporary tinting of existing eyebrow hair without dramatic reshaping — yes, most scholars say it is. For tattooing or microblading — no.

What to Do About It — Practical Steps

If you currently have eyebrow tattoos or microblading: Scholars recognize that you cannot immediately undo this. The focus is sincere repentance for the future, not punishing yourself for the past. If you are considering microblading or tattooing: Research what permanent tattooing actually involves. The needle-and-pigment reality of microblading is effectively a tattoo. Before proceeding, consider whether temporary options — tinting, brow products — can achieve what you are looking for without the haram component.

If you are using temporary tinting: Check that the product does not leave a film on the hair. Henna-based products are the most unambiguously permissible, as henna has been used by Muslims for centuries.

If shape is the concern: Address the plucking question separately from the dyeing question. Removing genuinely stray hairs (such as a unibrow) is considered permissible by the majority of scholars. Dramatically reshaping the brow arch is the contested area.

What about eyebrow lamination — is that haram? Eyebrow lamination straightens and sets the existing eyebrow hairs without removing or permanently altering them. Most scholars who have addressed it consider it similar to temporary grooming practices — permissible, with the same caveat about wudu barriers. The process is not tattooing and does not remove hair.

Can men dye their eyebrows? There is no prohibition specifically on men coloring eyebrow hair. The concerns about tattooing apply equally to men. The concern about al-nams (plucking for beautification) has been discussed specifically in the context of women by many scholars, though some extend it to men as well.

Is using eyebrow pencil or powder haram? No — makeup products applied over the skin or hair and removed with washing are universally considered permissible. This is not tattooing or permanent modification.
