In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Eid morning has an energy unlike any other day. Everyone is dressed, smelling good, saying takbeer, children are excited โ€” and then you arrive at the musalla and the prayer starts, with extra takbeers you were not entirely prepared for.

Most Muslims learn Eid prayer by following the congregation without fully understanding what they are doing. This guide fixes that.

When you know the structure, you can focus on gratitude and presence instead of watching nervously to see what the person next to you is doing.

Why This Prayer Matters

Eid prayer is one of the most significant communal acts of worship in Islam. The Prophet ๏ทบ made it a point to take the entire community out โ€” men, women, children, even those who were menstruating โ€” to perform this prayer together and make takbeer in unison.

"The Prophet ๏ทบ used to bring out the women on Eid โ€” even the young virgins from their seclusion and the menstruating women โ€” to witness the good and the dua of the Muslims."

โ€” (Sahih Bukhari 974)

This is a day to feel the ummah. Do not rush through it.

Step-by-Step Guide to Eid Prayer

Step 1: Make Intention (Niyyah)

Before the prayer begins, make the intention in your heart: "I intend to pray two rakats of Eid prayer, following the imam."

No verbal niyyah is required โ€” the intention is in the heart.

Step 2: First Rakat โ€” The Opening

  1. Opening Takbeer: The imam says "Allahu Akbar" โ€” raise your hands to your earlobes and fold them. This is the standard opening takbeer.

  2. Opening Dua (silently, if you know it): Say Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika wa tabaraka asmuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk (the thana).

  3. Extra Takbeers โ€” 7 additional takbeers: After the opening takbeer, the imam says 7 more takbeers. Raise your hands for each one.

    Between each takbeer, recite quietly:

  4. Ta'awwudh and Bismillah silently, then the imam recites Surah Al-Fatiha aloud, followed by another surah (often Surah Al-A'la or Surah Qaf).

  5. Complete the rakat normally: ruku, two sujood, sit briefly, then stand.

Step 3: Second Rakat โ€” The Extra Takbeers After Standing

  1. After standing from the first rakat, the imam says 5 extra takbeers (some schools say 4 โ€” follow your imam).

  2. Between each takbeer, same dhikr as above.

  3. The imam then recites Al-Fatiha aloud and another surah (often Surah Al-Ghashiyah or Al-Qamar).

  4. Complete the rakat normally: ruku, two sujood, final tashahhud, salawat, salam.

Step 4: The Khutbah โ€” Stay for It

After the prayer, the imam gives the Eid khutbah. Unlike Jumu'ah where the khutbah precedes prayer, the Eid khutbah comes after. It is Sunnah to listen attentively โ€” and historically, staying for the khutbah was considered part of the complete Eid experience.

Step 5: Dua and Takbeer

After the prayer, make personal dua. On Eid al-Adha especially, continue making takbeer throughout the day. The Eid takbeer:

Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallahu, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd

Making It Stick โ€” The Habit Beyond Eid

Eid reveals something: when the community prays together with full presence and joy, worship feels different. That feeling is available more than twice a year.

The Prophet ๏ทบ connected Eid to the fasting of Ramadan and the Hajj as moments of collective worship that are transformative precisely because of their communal nature. Jumu'ah is a weekly version of this. The five daily prayers are a daily version.

The lesson from Eid prayer is not just about extra takbeers โ€” it is about showing up with your whole self. Learn to make praying 5 times a day a consistent habit and bring some of that Eid energy to your daily salah.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Arriving late and missing rakats. If you miss a rakat of Eid prayer with the congregation, you make it up after the imam gives salam โ€” with the extra takbeers, following the format above.

Mistake 2: Leaving before the khutbah. Some people leave immediately after the prayer. The Eid khutbah is part of the sunnah of the day and contains reminders that matter.

Mistake 3: Following different schools than your congregation. If your congregation follows a specific school, follow the imam rather than doing something different individually. Congregation unity takes priority in communal prayer.

Mistake 4: Not making takbeer on the way to the prayer. The Sunnah is to make takbeer loudly from leaving the home until the prayer begins. This communal takbeer is a powerful moment โ€” do not skip it by staring at your phone.

Common Questions

What if I arrive during the extra takbeers? Join immediately with a niyyah. Say the opening takbeer to join, then follow the imam โ€” even if you arrive mid-way through the extra takbeers. You have joined the congregation, which is what matters.

Can I pray Eid prayer if I have not fasted the Day of Arafah (Eid al-Adha)? Yes. Eid prayer and the voluntary fast of Arafah are separate acts. Missing the fast does not disqualify you from praying Eid.

What if I do not understand the khutbah because it is in Arabic? Listen quietly and make your own internal dua and reflection during the parts you do not understand. Many mosques also provide translations. The act of sitting with the community in the khutbah has its own blessing.

How do I greet people on Eid correctly? The Companions said to each other: Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum โ€” "May Allah accept [good deeds] from us and from you." This is an authenticated Eid greeting. See more about Taqabbalallahu minna wa minkum.

Closing โ€” Start Today, Not Tomorrow

You do not need to wait until Eid to prepare for Eid prayer. Read this guide before the next Eid, pray in congregation, and let the extra takbeers be moments of full presence โ€” not confusion.

And when Eid is over, carry that feeling of communal salah into your daily Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. The energy of Eid is what salah is designed to produce every day. Learn about what Eid al-Fitr means and the dua for Eid al-Fitr to complete your Eid practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Eid prayer different from regular prayer?

Eid prayer consists of 2 rakats with extra takbeers (additional Allahu Akbars) beyond the opening takbeer. In the first rakat, there are 7 extra takbeers before Surah Al-Fatiha. In the second rakat, there are 5 extra takbeers after standing up from sujood, before Surah Al-Fatiha. There is also a khutbah (sermon) after the prayer.

Is Eid prayer obligatory (fard)?

The majority of scholars consider Eid prayer to be Sunnah Muakkadah (strongly recommended) for those who are able. The Hanbali school holds it to be Wajib (obligatory). Missing it without a valid excuse is considered a serious omission by most scholars, though you are not sinful in the technical fard sense according to the majority view.

Can women attend Eid prayer?

Yes. The Prophet ๏ทบ specifically instructed that all women โ€” including those menstruating โ€” should attend the Eid gathering. Women who are menstruating should not pray but should participate in the gathering, the dua, and the takbeers. The Eid gathering is a community celebration for all.

Can Eid prayer be performed at home?

The Eid prayer is communal by nature and should be performed in congregation when possible. If you genuinely cannot attend โ€” due to illness, distance, or valid excuse โ€” scholars differ on whether it can be prayed alone at home. The Hanbali school permits it alone. Most recommend attending any congregation rather than praying alone.

What do you say during the extra takbeers in Eid prayer?

Between each extra takbeer, it is Sunnah to praise Allah silently. Common formulas include: Subhanallah wal-hamdulillah wa la ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar. Some schools teach specific phrases; others say any form of dhikr between the takbeers is valid. Follow your imam's school if praying in congregation.
