بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The day has thrown everything at you. Deadlines, conversations, decisions, the constant noise of modern life. And now, between Asr and Maghrib — or in that quiet gap between Maghrib and Isha — there is a window. A chance to place yourself under protection before the night arrives.
The evening adhkar is that window. It is the second shield of the day — the bookend to the morning routine that closes out the waking hours and hands the night to Allah.
This guide gives you the complete evening adhkar routine, simply explained, with a practical method for building it as a real daily habit.
Why This Matters
The Prophet ﷺ said:
Man qara'a ayata al-Kursi hina yusbih, ujira min al-jinni hatta yumsi; wa man qara'aha hina yamsi, ujira min al-jinni hatta yusbih
"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi in the morning will be protected from jinn until evening; whoever recites it in the evening will be protected from jinn until morning."
— (Al-Nasa'i)
The evening adhkar do not just mark the end of the day — they actively provide a different quality of protection through the night hours. They are not optional if you want what the Prophet ﷺ described as the full cover of Allah's protection.

Step-by-Step Evening Adhkar Routine
Step 1 — Set the Trigger
The most natural anchor for evening adhkar is immediately after Asr prayer. You are already in a state of worship, already spiritually oriented. Transition directly from your Fajr sunnah into your evening adhkar by remaining in your prayer position for 10 minutes.
If Asr is not yet a consistent habit, use Maghrib as your anchor instead. The Maghrib-to-Isha gap is quiet in most households and is an ideal window for both evening adhkar and Quran.
Step 2 — Begin With the Evening Opening Dua
"We enter the evening, and the Kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner."
This opening declaration reorients your perspective: the evening — and everything in it — belongs to Allah. Your work, your family, your plans for tomorrow — all of it is in His hands as you enter the night.
Step 3 — Recite Ayat al-Kursi
Same as the morning — once, slowly. This is the single most protective act available in a few seconds of Quranic recitation. There is no evening (or morning) without it if you want the complete protection.
Step 4 — Recite the Three Quls Three Times Each
- Surah Al-Ikhlas — 3 times
- Surah Al-Falaq — 3 times
- Surah An-Nas — 3 times
The Prophet ﷺ recommended these three surahs to A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) as the evening protection practice — she would blow over her hands after reciting them and wipe over her body. (Sahih Bukhari 5017)
Step 5 — Sayyid al-Istighfar (Evening Version)
The same formula as the morning — said once with full attention. The Prophet ﷺ promised that whoever says it in the evening with conviction and dies before morning enters Paradise. (Sahih Bukhari 6306)
The difference between the morning and evening is the intention: in the morning you are entering the day seeking Allah's cover; in the evening you are entering the night with an accounting of the day — its sins, its shortcomings, its moments of forgetfulness — and seeking forgiveness before sleep.
Step 6 — Evening Protection Dua
اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ
Allahumma bika amsayna wa bika asbahna wa bika nahya wa bika namutu wa ilayka al-masir
"O Allah, by You we enter the evening, by You we enter the morning, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the return."
This dua frames existence itself — life, death, morning, evening — as entirely dependent on Allah. It is the most theologically comprehensive of the evening formulas.
Step 7 — Evening Tasbeeh
End with 33 repetitions of Subhanallah, 33 of Alhamdulillah, and 34 of Allahu Akbar. The same as the morning. These 100 repetitions can be done while sitting or while doing evening household tasks — the key is consistency.

Making It Stick — The Habit Science
The evening adhkar has one structural challenge: the Asr-to-Maghrib window is often the busiest part of the day — work ending, family returning, meals being prepared. Unlike Fajr, which has a natural quiet, the evening is full of competing demands.
The solution is to treat the evening adhkar like a salah: a fixed appointment that happens regardless of what is going on. Even five minutes of phone-off, eyes-on-the-adhkar practice is enough for the core formulas. See how to do morning adhkar for the complementary morning routine, and dua for sleeping for the sleep duas that close out the full Sunnah evening cycle.
Start with just Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls after Asr or Maghrib. Do that every day for two weeks before adding more formulas.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Delaying until bedtime. By the time you are in bed, fatigue often wins and the adhkar become fragmented or skipped. Do them in a chair or on your prayer mat at Asr or Maghrib, while alert.
Saying them silently while doing other things. The evening adhkar deserve dedicated attention, not multitasking. Put the phone down, pause the TV, and give the formulas 10 uninterrupted minutes.
Confusing evening adhkar with sleep duas. They are separate practices. The evening adhkar happen while you are awake and alert; the sleep duas happen as you lie down. Both are important and neither replaces the other.
Common Questions
If I pray Asr late, does the evening adhkar window shift?
The window is tied to the actual time (Asr to Isha), not your prayer schedule. If you pray Asr late, say the evening adhkar immediately after — you are still within the window.
Can I say the evening adhkar while cooking or walking?
Yes, for the shorter formulas like tasbeeh and simple dhikr. For the longer duas like Sayyid al-Istighfar and Ayat al-Kursi, pause what you are doing and give them proper attention.
Is there evidence that evening adhkar specifically ward off nightmares?
Yes. The Sunnah sleep practice — which begins with the evening adhkar and ends with specific sleep duas — is consistently associated in both hadith and Muslim experience with protection during the night, including from disturbing dreams. See dua for nightmares for the specific practice.
Close the Day Right
Every day has an accounting. Every evening is an opportunity to close your accounts with Allah before sleep — to seek forgiveness for what went wrong, to thank Him for what went right, and to place yourself under His protection for the night ahead.
The evening adhkar is how that happens. It takes less time than a television episode and gives you something no entertainment can provide: the quiet certainty that you are covered.
Start tonight. Ayat al-Kursi. Three Quls. Sayyid al-Istighfar. Five minutes. That is the beginning of a practice that will change your nights.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should evening adhkar be said?
The evening adhkar (_adhkar al-masa'_) begin from the time of Asr prayer and extend until Isha, with the period around Maghrib being most virtuous. Unlike the morning adhkar which follow Fajr, the evening adhkar do not have a single mandatory starting trigger — the Asr to Maghrib window is the target time. Many Muslims say them immediately after Asr or during the Maghrib-to-Isha gap.
Are the evening adhkar different from the morning adhkar?
Many formulas are shared between morning and evening adhkar — Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls, Sayyid al-Istighfar are all said both morning and evening. The timing is different, and some specific duas are exclusive to one time or the other. The evening versions use words like 'amsayna' (we enter evening) instead of 'asbahna' (we enter morning).
Can I say evening adhkar after Isha?
The preferred time is before Isha, ideally at or after Asr. Saying them after Isha is better than not saying them at all, but the specific spiritual reward and protection described in hadith references the evening timeframe. If you regularly miss the window, restructure your routine to say them after Asr or Maghrib rather than after Isha.
What if I fall asleep before completing my evening adhkar?
Try to say at minimum Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls immediately before sleep — these are specifically recommended before sleeping as well. If you fall asleep unintentionally before completing them, you are not sinful. Make the intention before sleeping and make them a priority the next evening.
How are the evening adhkar different from the dua before sleeping?
The evening adhkar are said during the Asr-to-Isha window, while sitting or during normal evening activity. The sleep duas are said specifically when lying down to sleep — they are a subset of evening remembrance but distinct in timing. Both are important and complement each other as part of the full Sunnah evening routine.
