How Many Rakats Is Maghrib? Fard and Sunnah Explained

Maghrib is the sunset prayer — the one that lands when the day is done and the evening is beginning. It is arguably the most clearly defined prayer in terms of timing: the window is tight, the sun has just set, and you have roughly 70-90 minutes before the time expires.

• Pray Maghrib at 3 rakats (unchanged)
• Pray Isha at 2 rakats (shortened from 4)

Can I pray Maghrib at home instead of the mosque? Yes. Praying in congregation (at the mosque) carries 27 times more reward according to the hadith, but praying alone at home is valid. If the mosque is nearby and accessible, attending congregation is strongly recommended.

What if I miss Maghrib and realize it at Isha time? Pray the 3 missed Maghrib rakats immediately as qada, then pray Isha. Missed prayers are made up in order. The sunnah rakats of Maghrib are not obligatory to make up.
