In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a specific kind of hardship where nothing you do seems to make a difference. You have planned, prepared, and tried โ and the situation is still beyond your control. That is the moment this phrase was made for.
Hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel โ "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs" โ is not a phrase of resignation. It is a phrase of spiritual defiance. It says: the situation may be beyond me, but it is not beyond the One I have entrusted with it.
Understanding where it comes from and what it actually means transforms it from a thing you repeat at the mosque into a phrase that changes how you handle impossible circumstances.
The Quranic Context: A Phrase for Impossible Moments
This exact phrase appears in Surah Al-Imran:
ุงูููุฐูููู ููุงูู ููููู ู ุงููููุงุณู ุฅูููู ุงููููุงุณู ููุฏู ุฌูู ูุนููุง ููููู ู ููุงุฎูุดูููููู ู ููุฒูุงุฏูููู ู ุฅููู ูุงููุง ููููุงูููุง ุญูุณูุจูููุง ุงูููููู ููููุนูู ู ุงููููููููู
"Those to whom people said: 'The people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it only increased them in faith, and they said: Hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel โ 'Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'"
โ (Surah Al-Imran, 3:173)
The context: after the Battle of Uhud, the Muslim community was shaken. A report came that Abu Sufyan and the Quraysh were gathering a massive army to finish them off. Fear was rational. Retreat was sensible.
Instead, their faith increased. And they answered the threat with this declaration.
What happened next: Allah says in the very next verse โ "So they returned with the blessings and bounty of Allah, and no harm touched them." (3:174) The declaration of sufficiency was followed by divine protection.
The same phrase appears in Surah Az-Zumar (39:38), where Allah describes those who, when afflicted, turn to Him โ and says He is sufficient for those who place their trust in Him.
Breaking Down the Meaning
Hasbunallah (ุญูุณูุจูููุง ุงููููู):
Hasbun comes from the root h-s-b, meaning to count, to suffice, to be enough. Hasbunallah literally means "Allah is enough for us" โ He is the limit of what we need. Not one of the things we need, but the sufficient thing itself.
This word was also said by Ibrahim (ุนููู ุงูุณูุงู ) when he was thrown into the fire. The narration in Ibn Abi Hatim and others records that when the fire was lit and Ibrahim was launched into it, his last word was hasbiyallah wa nimal wakeel. Allah responded by making the fire cool and safe. (Quran 21:69)
Wa nimal wakeel (ููููุนูู ู ุงููููููููู):
Wakeel means one who takes care of your affairs โ an agent, a trustee, a disposer. When you hire a lawyer to handle a case, you appoint them as your wakeel. Nimal wakeel is a superlative: "what an excellent, what a perfect Disposer of affairs."
Together: I have nothing except Allah. And the One I have is the best possible One to have.
The Story Behind Ibrahim's Use
When the fire was built for Ibrahim, his supplication was the singular acknowledgment that no force in creation โ not the crowd, not the flames, not the king โ was more powerful than the One who controls all of it.
The fire was matter. Allah is the one who gave fire the property of heat and burning. He could rescind that property. He did. "O fire, be cool and safe for Ibrahim." (Quran 21:69)
For the Muslim who says hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel in a moment of difficulty, the psychology is the same as Ibrahim's. The difficult thing โ the diagnosis, the financial loss, the threatening person, the impossible deadline โ has the properties it has because Allah gave it those properties. He can change any of them.
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
Use it as an interrupt in moments of anxiety. When the mind spirals with "what if" scenarios, say hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel audibly. This is not avoidance โ it is a reality check. You are reminding yourself of the actual power distribution in the universe.
Say it in the morning adhkar. Some scholars' collections include this phrase among the recommended morning remembrances. Saying it 7 times each morning after Fajr conditions the heart to begin the day from a position of trust rather than anxiety.
Say it when facing a specific difficulty. The Quranic context is exactly this โ responding to a threat with this phrase. When you receive bad news, a bill you cannot pay, a relationship conflict, or a health scare โ this is the moment for it.
Pair it with action, not passive waiting. Tawakkul is not fatalism. Ibrahim was thrown into the fire โ he did not jump in. The companions at Uhud were preparing to face the army again. Hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel is the phrase of the person who has done what they can and then entrusts the outcome to Allah. Do the work, then release the result.

Common Questions
Can I say it when I am angry, not just anxious?
Absolutely. Anger is often a response to situations we cannot control โ someone wronged us, something went unfair. Saying hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel in that moment redirects the emotional energy from reactive outrage to deliberate trust. It will not instantly eliminate the anger, but it orients the heart correctly.
What if I say it and nothing changes?
The phrase is not a transaction โ it is a stance. Ibrahim was thrown in the fire after saying it. What changed was not the fire's existence but the fire's effect. Sometimes the change is internal โ in your heart and your capacity to bear something โ before it is external. Trust the process.
Is it only for major crises or also for small daily worries?
Both. The Prophet said "hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel" in significant contexts, but dhikr in Islam is continuous โ it is not reserved for emergencies. Small worries are worth addressing with small acts of remembrance. Building the habit at small scale makes it available at large scale when you need it most.
The Phrase That Defeated an Army
At Uhud, the Muslim community was shaken, outnumbered, and reportedly threatened again. They responded with a phrase, not a battle plan. And they returned home unharmed.
The lesson is not that phrases replace preparation. It is that after preparation, surrender of outcome to Allah is the highest act a believer can perform. The one who has done everything they can and then says hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel has put the affair in the best possible hands.
You can do the same, starting today.

When did the Prophet say Hasbunallahu Wa Nimal Wakeel?
The Prophet and his companions said this phrase at the Battle of Uhud when they were told an enemy army was massing against them. Rather than retreating in fear, they responded with this declaration. What is the difference between Hasbunallah and Hasbiyallah?

The phrase 'Hasbunallahu wa nimal wakeel' uses the plural form.
