In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A sneeze gets a Alhamdulillah. A yawn gets a seeking of refuge from Shaytan. These two involuntary acts of the body receive completely opposite responses in the Sunnah โ and that contrast teaches something profound about the Islamic view of alertness, presence, and the nafs.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said sneezing is beloved to Allah because it comes with praise and alertness. Yawning is from Shaytan because it comes with heaviness, inattentiveness, and the over-full stomach that the Sunnah warns against. In other words: the same involuntary body can be a vehicle for remembrance or for distraction โ depending on the habit you build around it.
The dua when yawning is your daily training in noticing which direction you are drifting.
The Dua
First โ suppress the yawn:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you yawns, let him resist it as much as possible." Try to close your mouth. If you feel the urge coming, resist it. This is the first and primary response.
If suppression fails โ cover your mouth:
ููุฅูุฐูุง ุชูุซูุงุกูุจู ุฃูุญูุฏูููู ู ููููููู ูุณููู ุจูููุฏููู ุนูููู ููููู ููุฅูููู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ููุฏูุฎููู
"When one of you yawns, let him hold his hand over his mouth, for Shaytan enters." โ (Sahih Muslim 2995)
The dua to say:
ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจูุงูููููู ู ููู ุงูุดููููุทูุงูู ุงูุฑููุฌููู ู
A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim.
"I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan."
What NOT to do:
Avoid making the "Ha" sound that often accompanies yawning. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "For when one of you says 'Ha,' Shaytan laughs" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3289). Suppressing this sound is part of the Sunnah.
The Story Behind It
The Prophet (peace be upon him) drew a clear contrast: "Sneezing is from Allah and yawning is from Shaytan. When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, it is obligatory upon every Muslim who hears him to say 'May Allah have mercy on you.' But yawning is from Shaytan โ when one of you feels it coming, let him resist it as much as possible, for when one of you yawns, Shaytan laughs" (Sahih al-Bukhari 3289).
Why is yawning associated with Shaytan? The scholars explain several dimensions:
First, yawning typically comes from overeating, laziness, or tiredness โ states that Islam consistently discourages as entry points for the nafs. The Sunnah of eating less than full capacity directly addresses this. Second, an open mouth is a spiritual vulnerability โ covering it closes that opening. Third, the sound of yawning is associated with a heaviness of the spirit that Shaytan exploits.
This does not mean you are sinful for being tired. But it does mean that the moment you catch yourself yawning, you have an opportunity: to seek refuge, to recalibrate, to notice "I am in a state that makes me vulnerable."
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Daily Life
The practice around yawning connects directly to broader habits of self-awareness and nafs management.
The suppression habit: When you feel a yawn coming, your first response is to try to close your mouth and resist. This sounds small โ but it is actual physical training in sabr (patience) and self-restraint. The ability to resist an involuntary impulse, even in tiny doses, is the same muscle used to resist the nafs in larger struggles.
The covering habit: Your hand goes to your mouth immediately if you cannot suppress it. This becomes automatic with practice โ the same way saying Bismillah before eating becomes automatic.
The seeking-refuge habit: Say A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim immediately after yawning. If you yawn frequently during the same activity (a long meeting, studying), this becomes a repeated reminder to seek Allah's protection.
Address the cause: If you yawn constantly during prayer โ this is a sign worth addressing. The Prophet (peace be upon him) discouraged praying while drowsy: "When one of you is drowsy during prayer, let him sleep until the drowsiness leaves him, for if he prays while drowsy, he does not know whether he is seeking forgiveness or insulting himself" (Sahih al-Bukhari 212). Establishing a proper sleep schedule, limiting food before prayer, and waking for Fajr consistently all address the root.
Compare with the sneezing habit: Learning both the dua when sneezing and the dua when yawning together creates a useful contrast in your awareness. Sneezing = praise. Yawning = seek refuge. Two different body signals, two different spiritual responses, both keeping you in active remembrance of Allah throughout the day.

Common Questions
Is yawning in prayer particularly problematic?
Yes. Yawning during prayer is one of the more disliked acts because it signals inattentiveness during the conversation with Allah. Try to suppress it especially during salah. If it cannot be suppressed, cover your mouth immediately. The goal is to preserve as much khushu (presence) as possible โ see how to build khushu in salah.
What if I yawn constantly and cannot help it?
If yawning is frequent and uncontrollable, it may indicate sleep deprivation, illness, or other medical factors. Address the root cause: establish a consistent sleep schedule, avoid overeating especially before prayer, and see a doctor if the issue is persistent. The Sunnah guidance is not meant to induce guilt about involuntary physiology โ it is guidance for what to do in the moments when the choice exists.
Is it disrespectful to yawn in front of others in Islamic etiquette?
Covering the mouth when yawning is both a Sunnah and a universal sign of courtesy. The teaching to suppress and cover is in harmony with basic social respect. Making the "Ha" sound loudly in public is disliked in the Sunnah for the reasons mentioned โ it is also generally seen as rude in most cultures.
Do children need to follow these rules about yawning?
Teaching children the etiquette of covering the mouth when yawning is excellent early Islamic education โ it is practical, easy to understand, and connected to real life. You do not need to explain the full theological dimension to young children; "cover your mouth and say A'udhu billah" is enough to start.
Closing
The dua when yawning is a reminder hiding in plain sight. Every time you feel that pull of heaviness and inattentiveness, you have a choice: let it pass without awareness, or catch it, cover your mouth, and say A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim.
That is self-awareness in action. That is the nafs being noticed rather than indulged. That is the Sunnah turning an involuntary act into a moment of active spiritual engagement.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared about yawning because he cared about your alertness โ your presence in prayer, your awareness of Allah, your resistance to the states that make you vulnerable. Build the habit of the dua when yawning, and you build the habit of catching yourself before drifting further.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua when yawning in Islam?
When you feel the urge to yawn, try to suppress it. If you cannot, cover your mouth with your hand or sleeve and say: 'A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim' โ I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. This is based on the hadith that yawning is from Shaytan (Sahih al-Bukhari 3289).
Why is yawning considered disliked in Islam?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Yawning is from Shaytan. When one of you yawns, let him resist it as much as possible, for when one of you says 'Ha' (the sound of yawning), Shaytan laughs' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3289). This does not mean yawning is sinful โ it is a reminder to resist laziness and lack of alertness.
What is the difference between sneezing and yawning in Islam?
Sneezing is loved by Allah because it clears harmful substances and you say Alhamdulillah. Yawning is from Shaytan โ associated with laziness, full stomach, and inattentiveness โ so you suppress it and seek refuge from Shaytan. They are mirror-opposite Sunnah practices that together show how Islam provides guidance for even the smallest acts.
Is it sinful to yawn?
No. Yawning is involuntary and therefore not sinful. The teaching is to: (1) try to suppress it, (2) cover your mouth if it cannot be suppressed, and (3) not make the 'Ha' sound that Shaytan takes pleasure in. Failing to do this is not a sin but leaves you without the protection of the recommended Sunnah.
Should I cover my mouth when yawning?
Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed covering the mouth when yawning. The hadith in Sahih Muslim (2995) states: 'When one of you yawns, let him cover his mouth with his hand, lest Shaytan enters.' This is both spiritual protection and good manners in all cultures.
