In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A person in sujud on a prayer mat, forehead touching the ground, soft morning light, peaceful and focused atmosphere

There is one moment in your prayer that is unlike any other in your day. Your forehead is on the ground. The highest point of your body โ€” your head โ€” is at the lowest point. Every form of worldly hierarchy is inverted.

This is sujud. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said it is the closest you ever get to Allah.

Not during Tahajjud. Not at the Kaaba. Not in the last ten nights of Ramadan specifically. The closest moment is this one โ€” forehead down, in submission.

If that is true โ€” and it is โ€” then what we say in sujud matters enormously. Most of us rush through it.

The Dua for Prostration in Prayer

The obligatory dhikr of sujud

Subhana Rabbiyal A'la

"Glory be to my Lord Most High."

Said a minimum of three times. This is the established sunnah taught by the Prophet ๏ทบ based on the verse of the Quran: "Glorify the name of your Lord Most High." (Surah Al-A'la, 87:1)

"O Allah, forgive all of my sin โ€” the small and the large, the first and the last, the open and the hidden." โ€” (Muslim 483)

This is one of the most powerful duas for sujud. It covers every category of sin with one supplication.

Sajada wajhiya lillathi khalaqahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu bi hawlihi wa quwwatih

"My face has prostrated to the One who created it and opened up its hearing and sight by His power and might." โ€” (Tirmidhi 580)

Said specifically when performing sujud tilawah โ€” the prostration upon reciting certain Quranic verses.

The Story Behind Sujud's Special Status

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is while in sujud, so make abundant dua." (Muslim 482)

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet said: "I was forbidden from reciting the Quran while bowing (ruku') or prostrating (sujud). In ruku', exalt the Lord. And in sujud, exert yourselves in dua โ€” it is more likely to be answered." (Muslim 479)

This second hadith is extraordinary. The Prophet was told: no Quran recitation in sujud โ€” because sujud is reserved for something even more direct. It is for your personal speech to Allah. The Quran is Allah's words to you; sujud dua is your words to Allah. In this position, the communication is meant to be two-way.

The irony is that sujud is where most Muslims go silent โ€” saying only the minimum, rushing to rise. Meanwhile, the Prophet himself used sujud for extended personal supplication, sometimes praying so long that the Companions would worry.

How to Use Sujud as Your Most Powerful Dua Window

The practice of making full use of sujud changes the quality of your prayer more than almost anything else. Here is how to do it.

Learn the sujud duas by heart: The minimum โ€” Subhana Rabbiyal A'la three times โ€” is already there. Add the forgiveness dua: Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyyatahu wa sirrahu. Once you know it, you say it every sujud, every prayer, every day. Over a year, that is thousands of direct requests for comprehensive forgiveness.

Use the final sujud of voluntary prayer for personal duas: In nafl (voluntary) prayer, extend the last sujud. After the standard dhikr, speak to Allah. In Arabic if you can โ€” in your language if that is where your heart opens up. Ask for the thing you most need. Ask for your family. Ask for what keeps you up at night. This is your appointment.

Stop racing to get up: The biggest problem with most people's sujud is the pace. Three quick Subhana Rabbiyal A'la and they are already rising. Practice holding sujud for longer in your voluntary prayers. Let the forehead on the ground become a moment you actually inhabit rather than a position you pass through.

Sujud after every salah: Between the obligatory prayer and your sunnah prayers, you can perform additional sajdahs of thankfulness (sujud shukr). When something good happens โ€” a dua answered, a relief from hardship, good news โ€” go into sujud and say Alhamdulillah. The body posture reinforces what the tongue says.

Use sujud when you are struggling: When the weight of a decision, a fear, or a grief becomes too much โ€” go into sujud outside of prayer time (sujud shukr is valid any time). The physical act of placing your forehead on the ground realigns something in the heart that words alone cannot reach.

Common Questions

Can I make dua for specific worldly things in sujud?

Yes. The hadith says "make abundant dua" โ€” there is no restriction to spiritual requests only. Ask for your health, your job, your marriage, your children, your provision. The sujud dua is not limited to forgiveness. Whatever you need, the closest position to Allah is the right place to ask for it.

What about the dua of sujud al-shukr?

Sujud al-shukr is a prostration of gratitude performed outside of prayer. When you receive a blessing or are saved from a harm, going into sujud and saying Alhamdulillah or Subhanallah is sunnah. There is no specific fixed text โ€” gratitude in any form is appropriate. It is a physical act of acknowledging that the good came from Allah.

Should I whisper my dua in sujud or keep it internal?

Moving your lips quietly is preferable for two reasons: it ensures you are saying the words and not just thinking them, and it maintains the meditative quality of the moment without disturbing others. Complete silence in the heart is also valid, but whispering silently to yourself keeps you present.

What if my prayer is short and I cannot fit extra duas in sujud?

Start with your fard prayers as they are. Then build the extended sujud habit in your sunnah prayers first โ€” they are lighter and you have more latitude. Once you are comfortable spending extra time in sujud in nafl prayer, it naturally begins to lengthen your fard sujuds too.

Closing

You prostrate approximately 34 times in your five daily prayers. That is 34 direct appointments with the closest you will ever be to Allah โ€” every single day.

Most of those moments pass in about two seconds.

The sujud is not a position to rush through to get to the next standing. It is the destination. It is the moment the Prophet said: make abundant dua. Start treating it that way โ€” in your next prayer, in the next sujud, right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you say in sujud during prayer?

The minimum in sujud is Subhana Rabbiyal A'la โ€” Glory be to my Lord Most High โ€” said three times. This is the obligatory dhikr of sujud. Beyond that, the Prophet encouraged making personal dua in sujud, saying: The closest a servant is to his Lord is while in sujud, so make abundant dua. (Muslim 482)

Can I make personal dua in sujud during obligatory prayer?

Yes, but with a qualification. In Arabic, you may make any dua in sujud during obligatory prayer. In languages other than Arabic, some scholars say personal dua during obligatory prayer must be in Arabic; others allow it in any language, especially in the non-obligatory positions like sujud. In nafl (voluntary) prayer, scholars are more permissive. The safest and most rewarding approach is to learn your important duas in Arabic.

How many times should I say Subhana Rabbiyal A'la?

The minimum is three times. The Prophet sometimes said it more. Seven and ten times are mentioned in hadith narrations. There is no fixed upper limit. The key is that three times is the minimum and fulfills the sunnah; more is better if your prayer is not so long that it becomes burdensome to those praying behind you.

What is the most powerful dua to say in sujud?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would say in his sujud: Allahumma ighfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa alaniyyatahu wa sirrahu โ€” O Allah, forgive all my sins, the small and the large, the first and the last, the open and the hidden. (Muslim 483) This comprehensive forgiveness dua is one of the most powerful to learn for sujud.

Is sujud tilawah different from sujud in prayer?

Sujud tilawah (prostration of recitation) is performed when reaching certain Quranic verses. The dua for this sujud is: Sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu bi hawlihi wa quwwatih โ€” My face has prostrated to the One who created it, split open its hearing and sight by His power and might. (Tirmidhi 580)
