In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The moment you leave work is one of the small, overlooked moments of the day โ the gap between one world and another. You walk out a door, and suddenly you are no longer an employee, a professional, a boss, a colleague. You are a person heading home.
Most people do not mark this transition. They carry the stress, the unfinished business, the low-grade anxiety of the day directly into their home. By the time they walk through their front door, they are still at work in their heads โ just in a different location.
Islam offers something for this moment. A way to close the day with intention, gratitude, and a handing-over to Allah of what you could not finish and what you could not control.
The Dua
The gratitude for what the day provided โ the fundamental dua of closing:
ุงููุญูู ูุฏู ููููููู ุงูููุฐูู ุจูููุนูู ูุชููู ุชูุชูู ูู ุงูุตููุงููุญูุงุชู
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat.
"All praise is to Allah, by Whose grace good deeds are completed." โ (Ibn Majah 3803)
For handing what remains unfinished to Allah:
ุญูุณูุจููู ุงูููููู ููููุนูู ู ุงููููููููู
Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil.
"Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best of guardians." โ (Surah Al Imran 3:173)
As you approach your home โ the dua for entering it:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ุฎูููุฑู ุงููู ูููููุฌู ููุฎูููุฑู ุงููู ูุฎูุฑูุฌูุ ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ููููุฌูููุงุ ููุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู ุฎูุฑูุฌูููุงุ ููุนูููู ุงูููููู ุฑูุจููููุง ุชููููููููููุง
Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-makhraji, bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna.
"O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely." โ (Abu Dawud 5096)
The Story Behind It
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about which deeds are most beloved to Allah. He said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most regular and consistent, even if they are small." (Bukhari 6465)
The end of the workday is a daily transition. And what you do with it consistently โ every day, as a habit โ carries weight that a single dramatic spiritual act does not. The dua you say when you leave work is not about this day alone. It is about what you build over weeks, months, and years of consciously closing your professional life with gratitude and trust.
The Prophet also emphasized the rights of family members over you. Your spouse, your children, your household โ they have a right to your presence, not just your physical body. The dua at the end of work helps you actually arrive home โ mentally, emotionally, spiritually โ rather than just relocating your stress.
How to Build the End-of-Work Dua Habit
Make the exit your trigger. The moment you physically leave your workplace โ standing up from your desk for the last time, stepping out the door โ is your dua trigger. This moment happens at the same time every day, which makes it the perfect anchor for a new habit. Say Alhamdulillah the moment you cross the threshold. Nothing elaborate. Just the acknowledgment that the day, whatever it held, was from Allah.
The journey home is decompression time. If you drive, take public transport, or walk โ that time between work and home is not wasted time. Use it. Say Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah) during the commute โ it clears the spiritual residue of the day. Or say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar in sets of 33. This is not religious productivity for its own sake โ it genuinely shifts your internal state.
Before you open your front door, pause. One breath. One moment of intention: "I am going home to my family. They have a right over me. Let me give them my presence, not my leftovers." Then say Bismillah and enter. This small habit changes the quality of your evenings significantly.
Evening reflection. Once settled, take five minutes after Maghrib to bring your unresolved work concerns to Allah in dua. Ask for wisdom, patience, or clarity about whatever weighs on you. Then โ and this is the hard part โ actually let it go for the evening. You have given it to Allah. Trust that.

Common Questions
What if my workday was bad? Is it hard to say Alhamdulillah honestly?
Yes. And that is exactly when it matters most. Saying Alhamdulillah after a difficult day is not denial โ it is the Islamic acknowledgment that even in difficulty, there is provision, there is learning, there is the fact that you are still here. The Prophet said the believer's affair is always good: when something good happens they give thanks, when something hard happens they have patience โ and both are good for them. (Muslim 2999)
My work stress follows me home no matter what. How do I actually disconnect?
Start with the physical anchor first. The dua at the door creates a physical moment of transition. Pair it with something else you already do โ taking off your work shoes, changing clothes, washing your face. The body transition signals the mind: this is different space, different time. Over weeks, the habit of the dua begins to work on you. It does not happen immediately, but it does happen.
Is it okay to leave work early for prayer?
This depends on your workplace and contract. Islam requires praying on time when possible. In situations where prayer times conflict with work, scholars generally say you should arrange to pray in time โ even briefly โ and seek workplaces where this is possible. The dua for ease and the dua for a good job are appropriate if you are in a situation where maintaining your prayer is difficult.
Closing
You made it through the day. Whatever happened โ whatever went well, whatever went wrong, whatever you did not finish โ here is the moment you mark the boundary.
Say Alhamdulillah at the door. Hand what remains to Allah with Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakil. Walk home. Be present.
The workday will be there tomorrow. Tonight belongs to gratitude, rest, and the people who deserve to have you actually home.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a dua for finishing work in Islam?
There is no specific hadith with a dua labeled 'finishing work,' but Islamic teachings cover this moment through the gratitude duas (Alhamdulillah, shukr), the dua for entering the home, and the principle that ending any act with Bismillah and acknowledgment of Allah's help is recommended. Many scholars advise saying Alhamdulillah when completing a task as a recognition that any success came from Allah.
How do I leave work stress at work and not bring it home?
Practically: make a physical or mental transition ritual โ the moment you walk out the door is when you say the dua and consciously 'hand the rest to Allah.' You did what you could today. What you could not finish, make niyyah to address tomorrow. What was outside your control was never yours to carry. The dua helps mark the transition so your home and family get you present, not distracted.
What does Islam say about work-life balance?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Your body has a right over you, your eyes have a right over you, and your family has a right over you.' (Bukhari 5199). Islam is explicit that different parts of life have claims on your time and attention. Leaving work means returning the time to your family, your body, and your worship โ obligations the Prophet treated as real rights, not preferences.
Can I make dua for my work problems after leaving work?
Yes โ in fact, making dua after leaving work rather than during it can help you process the day spiritually. After Maghrib or before sleeping, bring your work concerns specifically to Allah. Ask for wisdom in the difficult relationship, clarity about the decision, patience with the situation. Separating the dua from the physical space of work can help you process it with more distance and sincerity.
What should I say when I return home from work?
The Prophet recommended saying Bismillah when entering the home. He said: 'When a man enters his house and mentions Allah's name upon entering and upon eating, the Shaytan says: You have no place to spend the night and no dinner. And if he enters without mentioning Allah's name, Shaytan says: You have found a place to spend the night.' (Muslim 2018). Start your transition home with Bismillah.
