In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Some decisions are clear. The right path is obvious and the only challenge is whether you will choose it.
Most decisions are not like that. They are genuinely ambiguous โ two reasonable options, incomplete information, competing values, and the uncomfortable awareness that you cannot see far enough ahead to know for certain which way to go.
Muslims often go immediately to istikhara when facing a decision. This is good โ istikhara is one of the most powerful tools in the Islamic toolkit. But there is a broader set of duas for the ongoing cultivation of clarity and discernment that most Muslims overlook, and these are arguably more foundational than the single prayer made before a specific choice.
This article covers both: the specific dua for clarity and how to build the kind of daily supplication practice that sharpens your judgment over time.
The Duas
The dua for seeing things as they truly are:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฃูุฑูููู ุงููุญูููู ุญููููุง ููุงุฑูุฒูููููู ุงุชููุจูุงุนููู ููุฃูุฑูููู ุงููุจูุงุทููู ุจูุงุทูููุง ููุงุฑูุฒูููููู ุงุฌูุชูููุงุจููู
Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan wa-rzuqni-ttiba'ah, wa arini al-batila batilan wa-rzuqni-jtinabah.
"O Allah, show me the truth as truth and grant me the ability to follow it, and show me falsehood as falsehood and grant me the ability to avoid it." โ (Widely transmitted from the early scholars; attributed through multiple chains)
This dua is remarkable because it asks for two things simultaneously: perception and the strength to act on it. Many people can see what is right and still not do it. This dua asks Allah to close that gap โ to grant not just clarity, but the tawfiq (divine enablement) to follow through.
For guidance on the straight path:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุณูุฃููููู ุงููููุฏูู ููุงูุชููููู ููุงููุนูููุงูู ููุงููุบูููู
Allahumma inni as'aluka al-huda wat-tuqa wal-afafa wal-ghina.
"O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency." โ (Sahih Muslim 2721)
Huda โ guidance โ is the first of the four requests. A person who consistently makes this dua is asking Allah daily to keep them on the path that leads somewhere good. This changes decision-making at the level of values, not just individual choices.
For the specific moment of uncertainty:
ุฑูุจูู ุงุดูุฑูุญู ููู ุตูุฏูุฑูู ููููุณููุฑู ููู ุฃูู ูุฑูู
Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri.
"My Lord, expand my chest and ease my matter for me." โ (Quran 20:25-26)
This was Musa's (peace be upon him) dua before one of the most consequential decisions of his life โ how to approach Pharaoh. The expansion of the chest in this context is the removal of constriction and confusion. It is asking for space to think and courage to act.
The Story Behind It
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "There are two qualities that Allah loves: deliberateness in matters and gentleness." ([Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-Iman])
Deliberateness โ anat โ is not indecisiveness. It is the quality of not rushing, of consulting, of taking the question seriously. The Prophet himself was known for this. He consulted his Companions on military and civil matters regularly โ the Battle of Badr's strategic positioning, the response to the Quraysh, the approach to treaties โ even though he had access to revelation.
The model of Islamic decision-making that the Prophet embodied was: consult (istisharah), deliberate (anat), pray for guidance (dua and istikhara), and then decide with tawakkul โ trusting that whatever comes from a sincere effort is within Allah's decree.
The dua for clarity is not a shortcut around this process. It is the spiritual thread running through all of it, asking Allah to make each step of the process work the way it should.
How to Build Clarity as a Daily Practice
Most decision-making problems are not solved by better frameworks โ they are solved by a clearer heart. And a clearer heart is built over time, not just in the moment of the decision.
Say the dua for seeing truth daily, not only before decisions. Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan... is most powerful when it is a habit, not an emergency request. Say it after Fajr. Say it in your post-Salah adhkar. Build it into the daily practice so that when a decision arrives, your heart is already oriented toward truth.
Practice istisharah โ consultation โ before istikhara. The Sunnah is to seek advice from wise people who know the situation before performing istikhara. The Prophet said: "No one regrets consulting others." ([Tabrani]) Consultation gathers information and perspective that dua then works on. They are complementary, not competing.
Use the Musa dua when you feel stuck. Rabbi ishrah li sadri wa yassir li amri is the dua for when the situation feels too large and confusing. When you cannot see the way forward, this is not a dua for the right answer โ it is a dua for the capacity to receive one. Ask for expansion of your chest, then return to the deliberation.
Make istikhara for the specific decision. Once you have gathered information, consulted, and made a preliminary assessment, perform Salat al-Istikhara for the specific choice. The dua for istikhara is the structured prophetic practice for this โ two raka'ah followed by the specific supplication. Do not skip it for major life decisions.
Accept that ambiguity is not a failure of dua. Sometimes you pray for clarity and things remain genuinely unclear. This is part of the test. The Islamic response is to make the best decision you can with the information you have, do it with a sincere intention, and then trust that whatever Allah decrees from that decision is not a punishment โ it is a direction.

Common Questions
What if I feel pressured to decide quickly?
Allah does not rush you in a way that compromises good judgment โ but people and circumstances sometimes do. If you are being pressured into a major decision faster than you can deliberate properly, that pressure itself may be information about the situation. The Prophet said deliberateness is beloved to Allah. If you need more time to pray and consult, ask for it.
I made a dua for clarity and then made a decision. Now things are hard. Did I do something wrong?
Difficulty after a decision is not necessarily a sign that the decision was wrong. Allah's decree often works through paths that include hardship before opening into good. The Prophet (peace be upon him) made every decision with sincerity and wisdom โ and many of them led through trials before arriving at clarity. Trust the process; do not interpret difficulty as divine rejection.
Can I make dua for someone else to make the right decision?
Yes. You can make dua for someone else: Allahumma ahdi [name] ila ma fihi khayruhu โ O Allah, guide [name] to what is good for him/her. This is an expression of genuine care and does not interfere with their free will โ it asks Allah to open what is good to them, not to override their choice.
Closing
Every significant decision is an act of faith โ faith that the effort you put in was enough, that the information you had was sufficient, that the Allah who created you also has a plan for where this goes.
The dua for clarity is not about getting a guarantee. It is about bringing your mind, your heart, and your decision before Allah repeatedly โ so that when you choose, you are choosing as someone oriented toward truth rather than someone navigating by their own limited light.
Make the dua daily. Cultivate the clarity before you need it. And then decide โ trusting that the One who knows what is in the hearts also knows what lies ahead on every road.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dua for clarity in decision making?
Say: Allahumma arini al-haqqa haqqan wa-rzuqni-ttiba'ah, wa arini al-batila batilan wa-rzuqni-jtinabah โ O Allah, show me the truth as truth and grant me the ability to follow it, and show me falsehood as falsehood and grant me the ability to avoid it. This dua is for seeing things as they actually are, which is the foundation of any good decision.
Is istikhara the only Islamic way to seek guidance in a decision?
No. Istikhara is the most structured method, but the Sunnah includes consultation (istisharah), general dua for guidance, and the ongoing practice of asking Allah for clarity. The Prophet also commanded seeking advice from knowledgeable people before making major decisions. The full Islamic approach to decision making combines these elements.
When should I make this dua for clarity?
Make it consistently as part of your daily adhkar โ not just when facing a specific decision. When you regularly ask Allah to show you truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood, your discernment sharpens over time. Then when a major decision arrives, your heart is already trained to recognize guidance.
What if I make a decision and regret it later?
The Prophet said: 'Know that if the whole of humanity gathered together to benefit you, they could only benefit you in a way that Allah had already written for you. And if they gathered to harm you, they could only harm you in a way that Allah had written against you.' (Tirmidhi 2516) Regret over a sincere decision is a sign you care โ not that you failed. Make dua going forward.
What is the difference between istikhara and the dua for clarity?
Istikhara is a specific structured prayer for a specific decision you are about to make. The dua for clarity is broader โ it is an ongoing supplication for your general capacity to see things truly, to recognize what is right, and to have the strength to follow it. Use both: the general dua daily, and istikhara for specific major decisions.
