In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Soft morning light beside a small pair of shoes and prayer beads representing the arrival of a new baby boy

You are holding him โ€” or you are about to. And somewhere in the midst of the exhaustion, the joy, the disbelief that someone this small exists and is yours, you feel the weight of the question: how do I do right by this child?

Islam has been answering that question for 1,400 years, and the answer it keeps giving is: begin with dua. Cover him with prayer before you can cover him with anything else.

The Dua

The opening protection โ€” to say when your baby boy is born, or when you first hold him:

U'idhuhu bikalimatillahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

"I seek protection for him in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and creature, and from every evil eye." โ€” (Bukhari 3371)

The Quranic dua for good offspring โ€” said before and after birth:

ุฑูŽุจูู‘ ู‡ูŽุจู’ ู„ููŠ ู…ูู†ู’ ู„ูŽุฏูู†ู’ูƒูŽ ุฐูุฑูู‘ูŠูŽู‘ุฉู‹ ุทูŽูŠูู‘ุจูŽุฉู‹ ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ูƒูŽ ุณูŽู…ููŠุนู ุงู„ุฏูู‘ุนูŽุงุกู

Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibah, innaka sami'ud-du'a.

"My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication." โ€” (Surah Al Imran 3:38)

The dua Prophet Ibrahim made for his sons โ€” still said by parents today:

Rabbi-j'alni muqimas-salati wa min dhurriyyati, Rabbana wa taqabbal du'a.

"My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants as well. Our Lord, and accept my supplication." โ€” (Surah Ibrahim 14:40)

The Story Behind It

When Maryam, the mother of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him), was born, her mother had made a vow to dedicate her unborn child to the service of Allah โ€” expecting a boy. When a girl was born, she said in surprise: "My Lord, I have delivered a female" โ€” but then immediately said: "And I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her descendants from the accursed Shaytan." (Surah Al Imran 3:36)

That immediate act โ€” turning to Allah the moment the child arrived, asking for protection โ€” is the Prophetic posture at birth. Before names are decided, before plans are made, before the world gets involved, you take your child before Allah.

That is the meaning of calling the adhan in the newborn's ear. The first words he hears are "Allahu Akbar." His world begins with the greatness of Allah, placed there by the first person who loved him.

Making Dua for Your Baby Boy a Daily Practice

The morning protection โ€” every day without exception. The Prophet's Companions reported that he would seek refuge for Hasan and Husayn every morning with the protection dua. Morning is when the day's dangers begin. Make it the first spiritual act of your day: before you check your phone, before you make coffee โ€” say the dua over your son.

Dua during the night feeding. If you are waking in the night to feed or soothe your baby, those quiet hours are among the most blessed for dua. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and asks who needs what. You are already awake. Say the dua for your son. Ask specifically for his health, his character, his future faith.

Lay your hand on him when you make dua. There is no specific hadith requiring touch during parental dua, but the practice of placing your hand on a sick or sleeping person while making dua is mentioned in prophetic practice (Bukhari 5675). When your son is sleeping, a quiet hand on his head while you make dua creates a moment of presence and intention that strengthens the act.

Pray for his salah from the beginning. Use Ibrahim's dua: Rabbi-j'alni muqimas-salati wa min dhurriyyati. You are asking Allah to make your son someone who prays โ€” years before he can walk. This is an act of long-term hope, a dua that plants a seed you will nurture for years to come.

Common Questions

Is it wrong to want a baby boy specifically?

No. Wanting a son is a natural human desire. Prophet Zakariyya wanted an heir. Prophet Ibrahim wanted a righteous son. Islam does not condemn the desire โ€” it asks only that you accept with gratitude whatever Allah decrees, whether a boy or a girl. Make the dua. Trust the outcome to Allah. And if a girl comes instead, know that the Prophet elevated daughters enormously in a culture that despised them.

What is the aqiqah for a baby boy and when should I do it?

Aqiqah is the slaughter of two sheep on behalf of a baby boy, to be done on the seventh day after birth if possible. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "For a boy, two sheep, and for a girl, one sheep." (Abu Dawud 2837). The day of aqiqah is also when the baby is traditionally named and his head shaved. If the seventh day passes, it can be done later.

Should I recite Quran over my newborn baby boy?

Yes. Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255), and the three Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) over a child is a recommended practice. These provide spiritual protection and fill the earliest moments of his life with the words of Allah. Some scholars recommend reciting them directly after the adhan and iqamah are called.

Closing

He has arrived โ€” this trust, this blessing, this boy who will one day carry your name forward and who may one day make dua for you when you are gone.

The best thing you can do for him right now is simple: ask Allah to protect him, guide him, and make him righteous. Say the words. Say them today, and tomorrow, and every day after.

The dua you make for your baby boy is among the most powerful acts of parenting you will ever perform. Begin now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a specific dua to ask Allah for a baby boy?

You may ask Allah for a son, just as Prophet Zakariyya did โ€” 'Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibah' (My Lord, grant me good offspring, Surah Al Imran 3:38). However, Islam also teaches that Allah chooses the gender of every child (Surah Ash-Shura 42:49-50). Making the dua with full acceptance of whatever Allah decrees โ€” including a daughter, who is also a great blessing โ€” is the most complete posture.

What dua do you say when a baby boy is born?

When a new baby is born, it is sunnah to call the adhan in the right ear and the iqamah in the left ear (reported practice, followed by many scholars). You can then say: 'Allahumma inni u'idhuh bika wa dhurriyyatahu min ash-shaytani-r-rajim' โ€” O Allah, I seek protection for him and his offspring from the accursed Shaytan. This was the dua Ibrahim made for Ismail and Ishaq (Surah Al Imran 3:36).

What is the best name to give a baby boy in Islam?

The Prophet said: 'The most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.' (Muslim 2132). Names that are attributes of servitude to Allah (beginning with Abd) are especially recommended. The Prophet also had good names himself and recommended choosing meaningful, beautiful names. Names of prophets โ€” Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, Yunus โ€” are also highly encouraged.

What should I do spiritually when I learn I am expecting a baby boy?

Increase your own worship โ€” not just for the child, but because pregnancy is a state of closeness to Allah that deserves to be met with closeness in return. Make dua during sujood for the child's righteousness, health, and faith. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and short Quranic surahs regularly. Ask Allah to protect the pregnancy and to bless you with the strength to raise a Muslim son who will be good for his family and for the ummah.

My wife just gave birth to a boy โ€” what should I do right away?

Call the adhan and iqamah in his ears. Say the protection dua over him. Perform aqiqah (two sheep for a boy) on the seventh day if you are able. Give him a good name โ€” also on the seventh day by Sunnah. Shave his head and give the weight of his hair in silver to charity. And begin making dua for him from the first day โ€” consistent parental dua is among the most impactful things you can do for a child.
