In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

A woman in soft prayer garment seated near a window, hands gently folded in a posture of supplication, warm morning light, an open Quran beside her

Long before a child says their first word, their mother has already spoken thousands of words on their behalf to Allah.

That is what pregnancy looks like in the Quran. Maryam's mother making dua for her unborn child. Zakariyya asking for righteous offspring well before his wife conceived. The duas of pregnancy are not afterthoughts โ€” they are among the most significant conversations with Allah a person can have.

Pregnancy is nine months of worship that the world rarely frames as worship. Every discomfort, every midnight waking, every anxious ultrasound โ€” these are chapters of a story being written between you and Allah about a soul that does not yet exist in the world but is already being shaped by your faith.

The Dua

The dua of Maryam's mother โ€” for protecting your child:

Rabbi inni wadha'tuha untha wa Allahu a'lamu bima wadha'at... wa inni sammaytuha Maryama wa inni u'idhuhaa bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytanir-rajim.

"My Lord, I have delivered her as a girl โ€” and Allah is most knowing of what she delivered โ€” and I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from the accursed Shaytan." โ€” (Surah Al-Imran 3:36)

The dua of Zakariyya โ€” for righteous offspring:

ุฑูŽุจูู‘ ู‡ูŽุจู’ ู„ููŠ ู…ูู† ู„ูŽู‘ุฏูู†ูƒูŽ ุฐูุฑูู‘ูŠูŽู‘ุฉู‹ ุทูŽูŠูู‘ุจูŽุฉู‹ ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ูƒูŽ ุณูŽู…ููŠุนู ุงู„ุฏูู‘ุนูŽุงุกู

Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibatan innaka sami'ud-du'a.

"My Lord, grant me from Yourself good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication." โ€” (Surah Al-Imran 3:38)

When to say these: Make the dua of Maryam's mother your primary daily pregnancy supplication โ€” said each morning and each night. The dua of Zakariyya for righteous offspring can be said at any time and pairs naturally with the daily prayer.

The Story Behind It

The wife of Imran (Maryam's mother, Hannah) had made a vow before she was even pregnant: if Allah gave her a child, she would dedicate that child to the service of the masjid. When she gave birth to a girl and realized her situation โ€” a girl could not serve in the temple as she had imagined โ€” her dua is recorded in the Quran not as a complaint but as a surrender. She named her child Maryam and immediately placed her in Allah's protection.

What happened next is the most significant chain of events in the Quran: the child born of that dua grew up to be Maryam ('alayha salam), the mother of Prophet Isa ('alayhi salam). The scholars note that the protection sought in that dua โ€” u'idhuhaa bika wa dhurriyyataha โ€” was answered in a way that shaped history.

The hadith adds to this: the Prophet said that every newborn is touched by Shaytan at birth except Maryam and her son, because their mother sought refuge for them in Allah. (Bukhari 3431) The dua of a mother before birth has power that extends into the child's life.

How to Build a Daily Dua Practice During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be physically and emotionally overwhelming. The spiritual practice has to be simple enough to maintain through morning sickness, exhaustion, and anxiety โ€” while being substantive enough to actually nourish you.

Morning: Dua upon waking. Start each morning with the protective dua of Maryam's mother, directed toward your unborn child. Place your hand on your abdomen as you say it if you wish. This is not a ritual requirement โ€” it is a personal act of connection, a daily handing over of your child to Allah's protection.

Through the day: Make dhikr natural. The Prophet said the best dhikr is La ilaha illa Allah, the best prayer is Alhamdulillah, and SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi plants a tree in Paradise. None of these require sitting. You can say them while walking, cooking, resting. The goal during pregnancy is a continuous low-level awareness of Allah's presence โ€” not intense sessions that drain you.

Evening: Recitation with intention. Even five minutes of Quran recitation after Maghrib โ€” particularly from Surah Maryam or Surah Al-Imran โ€” creates the spiritual atmosphere scholars have recommended for pregnant women across generations. You are not just reading for yourself; you are creating a sound environment that reflects iman.

During difficulty: Return to the short duas. When anxiety is high โ€” a difficult appointment, an unexpected finding, physical pain โ€” the simplest duas carry the most weight. Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakil ("Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Guardian is He" โ€” Al-Imran 3:173) is a complete act of trust in a single sentence.

Common Questions

Is there a specific dua for each trimester?

There is no established trimester-by-trimester schedule in the prophetic sunnah. The guidance is general: maintain daily dhikr and dua throughout pregnancy, increasing it during moments of difficulty or uncertainty. What changes across the trimesters is not the dua itself but the specific anxieties and gratitudes you bring to it.

What if I am too exhausted during first trimester to maintain a practice?

Do what you can. The Prophet said: "The most beloved actions to Allah are those done consistently, even if small." (Bukhari 6464) Even a single tasbih said with sincere heart is better than an elaborate routine you cannot maintain. First trimester exhaustion is real โ€” adapt to it rather than abandoning practice altogether.

Can my husband make dua for the pregnancy as well?

Absolutely and wholeheartedly. The duas of Ibrahim for righteous offspring, of Zakariyya for a child, of the righteous servants described in Surah Al-Furqan โ€” these are not exclusively women's duas. Both parents making dua together for their unborn child is a beautiful act of shared worship.

Is reciting Quran near the womb of any spiritual benefit to the child?

Scholars differ on whether the child in the womb spiritually benefits from Quran recitation in any supernatural sense. What is agreed upon is that maintaining Quran recitation during pregnancy benefits the mother's spiritual state, creates a home environment of iman, and is a form of worship in itself regardless of any measurable effect on the child.

Closing

The nine months of pregnancy are nine months of dua that precede everything else you will do as a parent. The duas said now, before the child has spoken a word or made a choice, are an act of faith in Allah's power and an investment in a soul you have been entrusted with.

Say the dua of Maryam's mother today. Say it tomorrow. Let it become the first conversation your child overhears โ€” even if they do not yet know they are listening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dua should I say during pregnancy?

The primary Quranic dua is from Surah Al-Imran (3:36): Rabbi inni wadha'tuha untha wa Allahu a'lamu bima wadha'at... wa inni sammaytuha Maryama wa inni u'idhuhaa bika wa dhurriyyataha minash-shaytanir-rajim โ€” This is the dua of Maryam's mother, seeking Allah's protection for her child from Shaytan.

Which surahs are recommended to recite during pregnancy?

Scholars commonly recommend Surah Maryam, Surah Yusuf, Surah Al-Imran, and regular recitation of Ayat al-Kursi. These are recommended for the spiritual environment they create. Surah Maryam in particular is connected to the stories of righteous pregnancies in the Quran.

Can I make dua for my unborn child?

Absolutely โ€” and the Quran shows this is prophetic practice. Maryam's mother made dua for her child before birth. Zakariyya made dua for righteous offspring before conception. Making dua for your unborn child's faith, health, and character is one of the most important acts of parenting you can begin immediately.

Is it safe to fast during pregnancy?

This is a medical question that requires consultation with a doctor. Islamically, pregnant women are permitted to break their fast if fasting poses a risk to their health or the health of the baby. They may make it up later or pay fidyah depending on their circumstances. Always consult a healthcare provider.

What dhikr is best to say frequently during pregnancy?

SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and La ilaha illa Allah are the most comprehensive. Salawat upon the Prophet is also widely recommended. Beyond specific counts, simply being in a state of frequent remembrance โ€” spoken or internal โ€” creates the spiritual environment the Quran describes as the nourishment of the soul.
