In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Five times a day, without fail, a window opens. It begins when the adhan rings out and closes when the iqamah is called. Most people spend this time on their phones, in conversation, or simply waiting.

The Prophet ๏ทบ told us this window is one of the most powerful moments for supplication in the entire day. And unlike the last third of the night or Laylatul Qadr, it is available five times every single day โ€” regardless of season, circumstance, or where you are in the world.

The Dua Between Adhan and Iqamah

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

"Dua is not rejected between the adhan and iqamah."

โ€” (Tirmidhi 212, Abu Dawud 521 โ€” hasan sahih)

Anas ibn Malik ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ narrated this and the Companions asked: "What should we say, O Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet replied that they should ask Allah for well-being (al-'afiyah) in this world and the next.

This guidance is significant: given the choice of what to ask for in a moment of guaranteed acceptance, the Prophet pointed toward 'afiyah โ€” comprehensive health, safety, wholeness, and protection in both worlds. It is not the most dramatic prayer, but it is the most comprehensive.

The recommended supplication for this time:

ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ูู…ูŽู‘ ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ุง ู†ูŽุณู’ุฃูŽู„ููƒูŽ ุงู„ู’ุนูŽุงูููŠูŽุฉูŽ ูููŠ ุงู„ุฏูู‘ู†ู’ูŠูŽุง ูˆูŽุงู„ุขุฎูุฑูŽุฉู

Allahumma inna nas'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah

"O Allah, we ask You for well-being in this world and the next."

The response to the adhan itself (said phrase by phrase as the muadhdhin calls):

After the adhan concludes, say:

Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da'watit-tammati was-salatil-qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah

"O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the prayer about to be established, grant Muhammad the intercession and the high rank..."

โ€” (Bukhari 614)

What to Say With Your Own Words

After the adhan response and the Prophet's recommended dua, use the remaining time for your personal supplications. This is the moment for the requests you carry every day โ€” health for a sick parent, guidance for a struggling child, relief from debt, strength to leave a sin, clarity on a decision. The window is open. Use it.

The Story Behind This Sacred Window

The Prophet ๏ทบ described several times when dua is most likely to be answered: the last third of the night, during rain, in sujood, on Fridays between Asr and Maghrib โ€” and between the adhan and iqamah.

What makes this window unique is its frequency. The last third of the night requires waking at a difficult hour. Laylatul Qadr comes once a year. But the adhan-to-iqamah window arrives five times every single day, announced publicly in every Muslim community on earth.

Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ asked the Prophet for guidance on the best thing to ask from Allah. The Prophet said: "Ask Allah for al-'afiyah." The next day, Abbas returned and asked again. The Prophet gave the same answer โ€” 'afiyah. On the third day, Abbas came again. The Prophet said: "O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. For if you are given well-being in this world and the Hereafter, you have succeeded." (Tirmidhi 3514 โ€” hasan)

Three days in a row, the same answer. The Prophet was not being repetitive. He was emphasizing that comprehensive well-being โ€” physical, spiritual, relational, financial, in this life and the next โ€” is the most precious thing you could possibly ask for.

How to Use This Window Every Day

Most people waste this opportunity simply because they are not paying attention. Here is how to make it intentional:

Respond to the adhan when you hear it. This is the beginning of the window. The Prophet ๏ทบ instructed us to repeat what the muadhdhin says (substituting "come to prayer, come to success" with "there is no power except with Allah"). This practice puts you in a state of active engagement rather than passive hearing.

Keep a short dua list. Your most important ongoing requests โ€” three to five things you are regularly bringing to Allah โ€” should be memorized or written. Between adhan and iqamah, cycle through them. The window is short; a focused list is more effective than trying to remember everything in the moment.

Put your phone away when the adhan calls. The adhan is Allah's house announcing a time of connection. Treat it that way. The phone can wait the ten minutes between adhan and iqamah.

Use it for the hardest requests. If there is something you have been hesitant to ask for โ€” something that feels too big, too specific, too personal โ€” this is the moment. The window is specifically described as a time when dua is not rejected. Bring your heaviest asks here.

Make it consistent across all five prayers. Fajr adhan, Dhuhr adhan, Asr adhan, Maghrib adhan, Isha adhan โ€” five windows every day. You do not need to make a long dua at each one. Even thirty seconds of intentional supplication transforms a passive wait into an act of worship.

Dua after the adhan (the complete dua):

Dua before entering prayer:

Allahummaf-tah li abwaba rahmatik

"O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy." โ€” (Muslim 713 โ€” said upon entering the mosque)

For understanding what to say at different prayer moments, see dua for after azan and dua between two sujood. For building the overall prayer habit that makes these windows consistent, how to build khushu in salah addresses the quality of the prayer that surrounds this window. The dua for prostration in prayer covers what to say inside the prayer itself.

Common Questions

If the dua is "not rejected," why have some of my prayers not been answered? Because "not rejected" does not always mean "given exactly as requested." The Prophet ๏ทบ explained that a dua is answered in one of three ways: the request is fulfilled; something equally good is given instead; or harm equivalent to the good is averted. All three are forms of acceptance.

Does the window apply if I pray at home and call my own adhan? Yes. The adhan you call in your home is a valid adhan, and the window between it and your iqamah carries the same status.

Is there a specific position for dua in this window? No fixed position is required. Sitting after completing wudu, facing the qiblah, with hands raised is the ideal posture โ€” but the Prophet did not specify a mandatory form. What matters is the intentional engagement.

Can I read my dua list from my phone in this window? Yes, as long as you are present with the words. A written list helps ensure you do not forget what you wanted to ask for. The presence of heart matters more than the medium.

The Window Is Open Right Now

The next adhan is only hours away. And when it calls, a window will open that the Prophet described as one of the most receptive moments for supplication in the entire day.

You do not need to do anything elaborate. Hear the adhan. Respond to it. Ask for 'afiyah. Bring your specific needs. Wait for iqamah.

That is the whole practice. Five times a day. For the rest of your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it true that dua between adhan and iqamah is never rejected?

Yes โ€” this is an authentic hadith: 'Dua between the adhan and iqamah is not rejected.' (Tirmidhi 212, Abu Dawud 521 โ€” hasan sahih) Scholars note this is a strong encouragement, not a guarantee of receiving exactly what you ask for. Allah may respond by giving what you asked, something better, or protection from harm equivalent to what you sought.

How long is the window between adhan and iqamah?

It varies by mosque and prayer time. In many mosques, the gap is 10โ€“20 minutes for most prayers, and longer for Fajr and Jumu'ah. The iqamah signals the window is closing, so use the time intentionally from the moment the adhan finishes.

What should I say between the adhan and iqamah?

First, respond to the adhan itself (repeating the caller's words). Then make any sincere personal dua for your needs โ€” in Arabic or your own language. The time is particularly valuable for your most important ongoing supplications: health, family, faith, provision, and the hereafter.

Can I make dua between adhan and iqamah at home when I hear the adhan?

Yes. The window applies wherever you hear the adhan โ€” at home, in the car, at work. Respond to the adhan, then use the time until the iqamah (even if you are praying at home and there is no announced iqamah) for sincere dua.
