Most Muslims who know Ayatul Kursi know it the way they know their own phone number — recited so many times it has become a sound pattern more than a meaning. The words come out perfectly, and they land nowhere.

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatuw-wala nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya'lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum wa la yuhituna bishay'im-min 'ilmihi illa bima sha'. Wasi'a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya'uduhu hifzuhuma wa Huwal-'Aliyyul-'Azim.

"Allah — there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is presently before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

"Allah — there is no god except Him" — The verse begins with the declaration of tawheed. Everything else in the verse follows from this fact.

"The Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence" — Al-Hayy (Ever-Living) means His existence has no beginning and no end. Al-Qayyum means He is self-sustaining and sustains all of creation. Nothing exists without His continual act of sustaining it.

"Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep" — This describes absolute wakefulness and attention. Everything in creation requires rest. Allah requires none. He is never unaware, never off-duty, never too tired to notice you.

"To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth" — Total ownership. Not shared ownership. Not oversight of a creation He made and then left. Everything belongs to Him — including your circumstances, your body, your provision, your time.

"Who can intercede with Him except by His permission?" — Even the intercession of the prophets and righteous on the Day of Judgment happens only by Allah's permission. No one has leverage over Allah. This removes the concept of any being that can override or bypass His will.

"He knows what is presently before them and what will be after them" — Complete knowledge of past, present, and future — and everything in between. Your most private thought is known to Him. Your situation from every angle is known to Him. Nothing is hidden.

"They encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills" — Human beings — even scholars, even prophets — know only what Allah allowed them to know. The vastness of what we do not know is incalculable.

"His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth" — Scholars interpret the kursi as representing His dominion, knowledge, or — in some narrations — something physical whose vastness we cannot comprehend. The heavens and earth, as vast as they are, are contained within it.

"Their preservation tires Him not" — Maintaining all of creation — every atom, every heartbeat, every moment in every corner of the cosmos — does not burden Him. It does not cost Him. He sustains it effortlessly.

"He is the Most High, the Most Great" — The verse ends where it began: with Allah's absolute supremacy over everything.

Can Ayatul Kursi be recited in English?

Arabic is recommended — it is the language of revelation, and the sound of the Arabic carries its own dimension. However, if Arabic is difficult, reciting it with understanding in English is still an act of remembrance. Work toward the Arabic with diacritics (tashkeel) for the precise pronunciation.

Is there a specific number of times to recite it?
