In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You want to be strong. You want to look in the mirror and see someone who commands respect. There is nothing wrong with that desire โ Islam actually encourages physical strength. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that a strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak one.
But somewhere between your third year of lifting and the guy at your gym who put on 30 pounds of muscle in three months, a thought creeps in. Maybe just one cycle. Maybe just to get past a plateau. Maybe no one has to know.
This is where the conversation gets real.
The Quick Answer
The majority of contemporary scholars consider anabolic steroids haram when used for cosmetic or athletic purposes. The reasoning is clear: they cause proven, serious harm to the body, and Islam prohibits self-harm.
ููููุง ุชููููููุง ุจูุฃูููุฏููููู ู ุฅูููู ุงูุชููููููููุฉู
"And do not throw yourselves into destruction." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:195)
Steroids damage your liver, heart, hormones, and mental health. That is self-destruction with extra steps. Medical steroids prescribed by a doctor for a genuine condition are a separate matter and are permissible.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
Islam does not mention steroids by name โ they did not exist in 7th-century Arabia. But the Quran gives us principles that apply to every era, and they speak directly to this issue.
Harm to the Body Is Prohibited
Your body is an amanah (trust) from Allah. You do not own it โ you are its custodian. Anabolic steroids carry a long list of proven dangers: liver tumors, cardiovascular disease, hormonal shutdown, infertility, severe acne, and mood disorders including aggression and depression.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
ููุง ุถูุฑูุฑู ููููุง ุถูุฑูุงุฑู
"There should be neither harm nor reciprocal harm." โ (Sunan Ibn Majah 2341)
This is one of the five major maxims of Islamic jurisprudence. If a substance causes documented harm โ and steroids clearly do โ it cannot be permissible to use recreationally.
Altering Allah's Creation
Allah warns us in the Quran about Shaytan's plan for humanity:
ููููุขู ูุฑููููููู ู ููููููุบููููุฑูููู ุฎููููู ุงูููููู
"And I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah." โ (Surah An-Nisa, 4:119)
Injecting synthetic hormones to override your body's natural testosterone production and force unnatural muscle growth falls squarely into this category. You are not enhancing what Allah gave you โ you are replacing it with a chemical shortcut that your body was never designed to handle.
Deception Is Forbidden
There is another angle that gets overlooked. When you use steroids, you present a version of yourself that is not real. Your strength, your physique, your performance โ none of it is genuinely yours. If you compete, you are cheating. If you claim to be natural, you are lying. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever deceives us is not one of us" (Sahih Muslim 102).
This principle also applies to other substances that harm the body. The same logic behind why smoking is haram and why vaping is haram extends to steroids โ all of them trade short-term gratification for long-term damage.
Why This Is Actually Hard
Knowing that steroids are haram does not make the temptation disappear. And we need to be honest about why this is so difficult.
Social media has completely distorted what a natural physique looks like. You scroll through Instagram and see influencers with impossible proportions claiming it is just "hard work and chicken breast." Many of them are on gear. They will not tell you that. But their physique becomes the standard you measure yourself against, and your nafs whispers that you will never get there naturally.
Gym culture amplifies this. If your training partners are all using, you feel like the odd one out. There is real social pressure โ especially for young Muslim men who want to feel confident, strong, and respected. Body image issues are not just a women's problem. Brothers deal with this too, and the silence around it makes it worse.
Your lower self will negotiate: "It is just testosterone โ your body makes it anyway." "I will only do one cycle." "The harm is overblown." These are the same tricks the nafs plays with every sin. Recognize them for what they are.
What to Do About It โ Practical Steps
The desire for strength is good. The method matters. Here is how to channel that energy in a way that honors your body and your Lord.
Step 1: Reset Your Standards
Unfollow anyone on social media whose physique makes you feel inadequate โ especially if you suspect they are not natural. Replace those accounts with natural athletes, Islamic fitness content, and people who are transparent about their journey. What you feed your eyes shapes what your nafs demands.
Step 2: Train Smart and Be Patient
A natural lifter can build an impressive physique. It takes longer โ years, not months. But every pound of muscle you earn naturally is yours. It will not disappear when you stop a cycle. It will not cost you your liver at 40.
Focus on progressive overload, adequate protein (1.6-2.2g per kg of bodyweight), quality sleep, and consistency. These are boring answers. They are also the only ones that work long-term.
Step 3: Use Halal Supplements
Creatine monohydrate, whey protein, vitamin D, omega-3s โ these are all permissible and backed by science. Just check for halal certification and avoid products with haram ingredients. You do not need anything illegal or underground to support your training. For guidance on what is permissible to consume, see our overview of halal vs haram.
Step 4: Connect Fitness to Worship
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both" (Sahih Muslim 2664). Your training is not just vanity โ it can be an act of worship if your intention is to serve Allah with a strong body.
Make dua before you train. Thank Allah after a good session. Use your strength to help others โ carry groceries for the elderly, volunteer for physical tasks at the masjid, fast and still have energy for your family.

Step 5: Find Accountability
If the temptation is strong, tell someone. A trusted friend, a training partner, or a mentor. The same way someone struggling with substance use or harmful habits needs support, you deserve someone in your corner who will keep you honest.
Dua for Strength and Patience
When you feel frustrated with your progress or tempted to take shortcuts, turn to this dua:
ุฑูุจููููุง ุฃูููุฑูุบู ุนูููููููุง ุตูุจูุฑูุง ููุซูุจููุชู ุฃูููุฏูุงู ูููุง
"Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:250)
Real strength โ the kind that matters on the Day of Judgment โ is the strength to say no when your nafs says yes. That is sabr. That is jihad al-nafs.
Common Questions
Can I use testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) if I have low testosterone?
If a qualified doctor diagnoses you with clinically low testosterone and prescribes TRT as medical treatment, this is permissible. Islam encourages seeking treatment for illness. The key distinction is medical necessity versus cosmetic desire. Self-prescribing testosterone from an underground lab is not TRT โ it is steroid abuse.
Is it haram to train at a gym where others use steroids?
No. You are responsible for your own choices, not the choices of others. However, if being around steroid users increases your temptation, consider your environment carefully. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) compared a good companion to a perfume seller and a bad one to a blacksmith โ your surroundings influence you whether you realize it or not.
Are SARMs or prohormones halal since they are not technically steroids?
SARMs and prohormones carry similar health risks to anabolic steroids โ liver toxicity, hormonal disruption, and cardiovascular strain. The label does not matter. The principle does: if a substance causes harm to your body, it is prohibited. The fact that something is marketed as "legal" does not make it halal. The same logic applies across many areas โ similar to how the permissibility of boxing depends on the harm involved, not just the label.
Does wanting to look good make me vain?
Caring about your appearance is natural and even encouraged in Islam โ Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. The problem starts when your self-worth becomes entirely dependent on your physique, or when you are willing to harm yourself to achieve a certain look. Train hard, eat well, and dress well โ but remember that your value comes from your character and your relationship with Allah, not your bench press.
Your Real Gains Are Not Measured in Kilograms
You clicked on this article because something inside you already knew the answer. That awareness is a mercy from Allah โ do not ignore it.
The iron will always be there. The weights will always be waiting. And you can build a body that is strong, capable, and impressive without injecting a single substance that could cost you your health, your hormones, or your akhirah.
Every rep you do with a clean body and a sincere intention is an act of worship. Every shortcut you refuse is a victory over your nafs. And Allah does not waste the effort of anyone who strives sincerely.
ุฅูููู ุงูููููู ููุง ููุถููุนู ุฃูุฌูุฑู ุงููู ูุญูุณูููููู
"Indeed, Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good." โ (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:120)

Frequently Asked Questions
Are steroids haram in Islam?
Yes, the majority of scholars consider anabolic steroids haram because they cause proven harm to the body โ including liver damage, heart disease, hormonal disruption, and psychological side effects. Islam prohibits self-harm, and using steroids for cosmetic or athletic purposes falls under this prohibition. Medical steroids prescribed by a doctor for a legitimate condition are a different matter entirely.
Are steroids prescribed by a doctor also haram?
No. Medically prescribed steroids โ such as corticosteroids for asthma, inflammation, or autoimmune conditions โ are permissible. Islam encourages seeking medical treatment. The prohibition applies to using anabolic steroids without medical necessity, purely for muscle gain or athletic performance.
Is it haram to use protein powder or creatine?
Standard supplements like protein powder, creatine, and multivitamins are generally permissible as long as they do not contain haram ingredients such as pork-derived gelatin or alcohol. Always check the label for halal certification. These supplements support natural training and do not carry the harmful side effects of anabolic steroids.
Why are steroids considered changing Allah's creation?
Anabolic steroids artificially alter your hormonal system to force muscle growth beyond what your body was designed to produce. Scholars draw on the Quranic warning against Shaytan's promise to make people change Allah's creation (Surah An-Nisa, 4:119). While this verse has broader applications, using synthetic hormones to fundamentally reshape your body for vanity falls within its scope.
Is competing in bodybuilding haram?
Bodybuilding as exercise and strength training is permissible and even encouraged in Islam. However, if competition requires exposing awrah, using haram substances like steroids, or leads to excessive vanity and pride, those specific elements become problematic. You can train hard and build an impressive physique naturally without crossing these lines.
