In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

You already know this one is not good for you. Every time you light up, there is a quiet voice beneath the craving โ your fitrah โ telling you this is not who you were created to be. Maybe you have tried to quit before. Maybe Ramadan gave you a head start and then the habit crept back on Eid night. Maybe you are just tired of the guilt, the smell, and the money going up in smoke.
If any of that sounds familiar, keep reading. This is not a lecture. This is a plan.
The Quick Answer
The majority of contemporary scholars have ruled that smoking is haram. The reasoning is straightforward: smoking causes proven, severe harm to the body, and Islam prohibits self-harm.
ููุง ุถูุฑูุฑู ููููุง ุถูุฑูุงุฑู
"There should be neither harm nor reciprocal harm." โ (Sunan Ibn Majah 2341)
This is one of the foundational maxims of Islamic law. If a substance is proven to kill you โ and cigarettes kill over 8 million people a year โ it cannot be permissible.
What the Quran and Sunnah Say
There is no verse that mentions cigarettes by name. Tobacco did not exist in 7th-century Arabia. But the Quran gives us principles that are timeless, and they apply directly.
Allah says:
ููููุง ุชููููููุง ุจูุฃูููุฏููููู ู ุฅูููู ุงูุชููููููููุฉู
"And do not throw yourselves into destruction." โ (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:195)
Smoking is slow self-destruction. Lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, COPD โ the medical evidence is not debatable. When Allah forbids us from destroying ourselves, this is exactly the kind of harm He is warning us about.
Allah also says:
ููููุญูููู ููููู ู ุงูุทูููููุจูุงุชู ููููุญูุฑููู ู ุนูููููููู ู ุงููุฎูุจูุงุฆูุซู
"He makes lawful for them what is good (tayyibat) and prohibits for them what is evil (khabaith)." โ (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:157)
Ask yourself honestly: is a cigarette from the tayyibat or the khabaith? The answer is clear. Smoking pollutes your body, harms those around you through secondhand smoke, wastes your wealth, and makes your mouth and clothes carry a foul odor โ the same kind of odor the Prophet ๏ทบ warned about regarding garlic and onions in the mosque.
The Prophet ๏ทบ told us:
"Your body has a right over you." โ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199)
That right includes not poisoning it slowly, day after day. If the ruling on hookah or vaping interests you, the same principles of bodily harm apply.
Why This Is Actually Hard
Knowing smoking is haram does not make quitting easy. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on earth. Your brain has been chemically rewired to need it. That is not a moral failing โ it is biology working against you.
Your nafs will fight you with every excuse it has:
- "I will quit after this pack"
- "I only smoke a few a day"
- "It calms my nerves โ I need it for stress"
- "My grandfather smoked and lived to 90"
These are negotiations. Your lower self is bargaining because it does not want to lose its comfort. The social dimension makes it worse โ if your friends, your father, or your coworkers all smoke, quitting feels like stepping out of your entire world.
But here is the truth: the discomfort of quitting is temporary. The damage of continuing is permanent. And the reward of perseverance is something no cigarette can offer โ peace with your Lord and peace with your body.
What to Do About It โ Practical Steps
Reading about why smoking is haram is the easy part. The hard part is the moment your hand reaches for the pack at 2 AM. Here is how to actually break the cycle.
Step 1: Set a Quit Date and Tell Someone
Do not say "I will quit soon." Pick a date within the next 7 days. Write it down. Tell a friend, a spouse, or an imam. When someone else knows, your commitment becomes real. Accountability is one of the most powerful tools in building lasting habits.
Step 2: Map Your Triggers
For three days before your quit date, pay attention to every cigarette. Write down when you smoked, what you were feeling, and what triggered it. Was it stress? Boredom? The end of a meal? Social pressure? You cannot fight an enemy you do not understand.
Step 3: Replace the Ritual
Smoking is not just about nicotine โ it is a ritual. The walk outside, the lighter flick, the deep inhale. You need to replace that ritual with something that fills the same space:
- After meals โ make dhikr for 5 minutes instead of stepping out to smoke
- During stress โ do istighfar (say Astaghfirullah 100 times) instead of reaching for the pack
- On breaks at work โ walk and listen to Quran recitation on your phone
- Social settings โ carry a miswak or tasbih to keep your hands and mouth occupied
Step 4: Track Your Smoke-Free Streak
Every day you do not smoke is a victory. Track it. Watch it grow. When the urge hits at day 5, look at those 5 days and ask yourself: "Do I really want to reset this to zero?"
Deen Back was built for exactly this kind of struggle โ replacing a harmful habit with worship, one day at a time.

Step 5: Use Medical Help Without Shame
Nicotine patches, gum, or prescribed medication are not signs of weakness. They are tools. The Prophet ๏ทบ told us to seek treatment for illness โ and addiction is an illness. Combine medical support with spiritual effort and you attack the problem from both sides.
Dua for Strength When the Craving Hits
When the urge comes โ and it will, especially in the first two weeks โ have this dua ready:
ุงููููููู ูู ุฅููููู ุฃูุนููุฐู ุจููู ู ููู ุดูุฑูู ููููุณูู ููู ููู ุดูุฑูู ููููู ุฏูุงุจููุฉู ุฃูููุชู ุขุฎูุฐู ุจูููุงุตูููุชูููุง
"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self and from the evil of every creature that is under Your control." โ (Sunan Abu Dawud 5074)
And when you make it through a craving without smoking, say Alhamdulillah and mean it. You just won a battle against your nafs. That is real jihad.
Common Questions
Does smoking break my fast?
Yes. Deliberately inhaling smoke breaks the fast during Ramadan because you are introducing a substance into your body. Many Muslims find that Ramadan is the best time to quit since you are already abstaining during the day. Use those fasting hours as momentum and extend them beyond iftar.
Is secondhand smoke a sin too?
Harming others is prohibited in Islam. If your smoking exposes your family, children, or coworkers to secondhand smoke, you are causing harm to them โ which adds another layer of prohibition. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not harm his neighbor" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018).
I have tried to quit many times and failed โ what now?
Every attempt to quit is a good deed, even if you relapse. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a man who loses his camel in the desert and then finds it (Sahih Muslim 2747). Do not let past failures define your future. Make tawbah, adjust your strategy, get support, and try again. You might also explore our blog for more practical guidance on overcoming tough habits.
Is shisha or hookah different from cigarettes?
No. A single hookah session can deliver the equivalent of smoking 100 cigarettes in terms of smoke volume. The harm is the same or worse. The principles that make cigarettes haram apply equally to hookah and vaping.
You Are Stronger Than the Craving
You would not have read this far if you were not serious. That seriousness is a gift from Allah โ a sign that He wants good for you and is making it easy for your heart to turn.
You do not have to be someone who "used to smoke and now judges everyone." You just have to be someone who chose their health, their family, and their Lord over a craving that lasts 3 minutes. Because that is all a craving is โ a wave that peaks and passes. Ride it out with dhikr, and it will break.
Allah promises:
ููุงูููุฐูููู ุฌูุงููุฏููุง ูููููุง ููููููุฏููููููููู ู ุณูุจูููููุง
"And those who strive for Us โ We will surely guide them to Our ways." โ (Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:69)
The striving is yours. The guidance is His. Start today.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is smoking haram or makruh?
The majority of contemporary scholars โ including the permanent committees of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and many others โ have ruled smoking haram due to its clear, proven harm to the body. Some earlier scholars classified it as makruh (disliked) because the full extent of its damage was not yet known. With modern medical evidence confirming that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, and death, the scholarly consensus has shifted firmly toward prohibition.
Does smoking break your wudu or fast?
Smoking does not break wudu according to the majority of scholars. However, smoking during daylight hours in Ramadan does break the fast, as inhaling smoke deliberately introduces a substance into the body. Many Muslims use Ramadan as a launching point to quit permanently.
Is it haram to smoke occasionally or only if you are addicted?
Harm to the body is not limited to heavy use. Even occasional smoking damages your lungs and wastes money that could be spent on your family or charity. The ruling applies to the act itself, not just the level of addiction. That said, the deeper your dependency, the more urgent it is to seek help and make a plan to quit.
What if I have been smoking for years โ is it too late to quit?
It is never too late. Your body begins to heal within hours of your last cigarette. Within a year, your risk of heart disease drops by half. More importantly, Allah loves the servant who repents sincerely, no matter how long the sin has lasted. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that Allah extends His hand at night for the one who sinned during the day. Start today.
Can I use nicotine patches or gum to quit?
Most scholars permit nicotine replacement therapies as a medical aid to quit smoking, since the goal is to eliminate the greater harm. The principle of choosing the lesser harm to remove the greater harm is well established in Islamic jurisprudence. Consult both a doctor and a trusted scholar if you have specific concerns.
