Are Fake Eyelashes Haram? What the Scholars Say and What to Do

What the Quran and Sunnah Say

The evidence comes from clear prophetic condemnation:

لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْوَاصِلَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ وَالْوَاشِمَةَ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةَ

La'ana Allahu al-wasilata wal-mustawsilata, wal-washimata wal-mustawshimah

"Allah has cursed the woman who adds hair extensions and the one who has it done, and the woman who does tattoos and the one who has it done."

The word wasilah refers to the one who joins or attaches false hair to existing hair. The hadith's application of a strong curse (la'nah) makes this a major prohibition, not a mild discouragement.

The Quran also reminds us:

وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ وَلَأُمَنِّيَنَّهُمْ وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُبَتِّكُنَّ آذَانَ الْأَنْعَامِ وَلَآمُرَنَّهُمْ فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ

"...and I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah."

— (Surah An-Nisa, 4:119)

This is Shaytan speaking — and his project is to lead people to alter what Allah created. Scholars use this verse alongside the hadith to establish a general principle: altering what Allah has naturally created, for the purpose of deception or pride, is prohibited.

Why This Is Actually Hard

Let's be honest about the landscape you're navigating.

Fake eyelashes are not illegal. They are not unusual. In most social contexts — weddings, events, ordinary days — they are simply what women wear. Your friends wear them. Influencers you follow wear them. The beauty industry treats them as a baseline.

Your nafs will offer you several very reasonable-sounding arguments:

• "Scholars disagree so it's fine."
• "It's just cosmetic, it doesn't hurt anyone."
• "Everyone does it — it can't be that serious."
• "I'll keep them for special occasions."

These arguments are not unique to fake eyelashes. They are the standard package the nafs uses for every haram thing that has become socially normalised. Recognising them as nafs-talk — not as genuine rulings or real justifications — is half the work.

What To Do About It — Practical Steps

Step 1: Acknowledge the ruling without guilt-spiralling.

Knowing something is haram does not automatically mean you've been committing major sins with evil intent. Many women adopted this practice without ever being told the ruling. Now you know. That is the starting point, not a verdict on your past.

Step 2: Make a sincere intention to stop.

Niyyah (intention) is where Islamic practice begins. You don't have to throw everything away tonight. Make a genuine internal commitment: "I want to align my beauty practices with what Allah has permitted."

Step 3: Find halal alternatives you actually like.

The Sunnah explicitly encourages kohl (ithmid) for the eyes — the Prophet ﷺ used it and recommended it (Abu Dawud 3837). Quality mascaras that darken and lengthen real lashes are permissible. Lash serums that genuinely grow your natural lashes are permissible. Curl your real lashes — that is not prohibited.

The goal is not to look worse. The goal is to look good in ways that please Allah.

Don't leave it open-ended. Pick a specific date to make the change. Share it with a trusted friend if accountability helps. Write it down.

This is for you and Allah. Many scholars would say: if you now know the ruling, acting on it is better than delay. But this is not a fatwa — speak to a scholar you trust if you need personal guidance for a specific situation.

What about eyelash tinting or lash lifts?

Lash tinting (dyeing natural lashes) is generally considered permissible, as it does not add artificial material to the lashes. Lash lifts (curling natural lashes semi-permanently) are also generally permitted. The prohibition is on adding fake hair-like material, not on treating existing natural lashes.

My husband prefers how I look with them — what then?

A husband's preference does not override a clear prophetic prohibition. A good marriage involves spouses helping each other maintain their deen, not adjusting Islamic rulings to fit preferences. Have an honest conversation. Most husbands who understand the ruling accept it readily.

What about permanent eyelash extensions applied by a salon?

The ruling is the same — permanent extensions are also under the prohibition, and arguably more so because of their semi-permanent nature and the degree of artificiality involved.
