In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Open Quran on a wooden stand with soft morning light โ€” virtues of reciting the Quran

Every Letter Is a Conversation

When you open the Quran and recite even one ayah, you are not performing a cultural ritual. You are receiving divine speech โ€” words that originated with Allah and were given, through Jibreel, to Muhammad ๏ทบ, and preserved without alteration for over 1400 years until they reached your lips right now.

The virtues of reciting the Quran flow from this reality. This is not just a sacred book โ€” it is the living word of Allah, and reciting it has effects on the reciter that no other text produces.

What the Prophet ๏ทบ Promised About Quran Recitation

"Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have one good deed for it, and the good deed is multiplied by ten. I do not say Alif Lam Meem is one letter โ€” Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter." โ€” (Al-Tirmidhi 2910)

This is not about understanding. Not about fluency. Not about having a beautiful voice. Every single letter โ€” even a stuttered, imperfect attempt โ€” yields ten rewards. Surah Al-Fatihah alone has more than 120 letters. Reciting it once gives over 1,200 rewards before multiplication. And you recite it at least 17 times every day in prayer.

The cumulative arithmetic of Quran recitation, compounded daily over a lifetime, is staggering.

The Virtues of Reciting the Quran

The Quran will intercede for you on the Day of Judgment

"Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions." โ€” (Sahih Muslim 804)

The word used is ashab โ€” companions. Those who made the Quran their companion in this world have its intercession in the next. The relationship is built here, letter by letter, day by day.

The best of people are those who learn and teach the Quran

"The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." โ€” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5027)

This is one of the most definitive descriptions of excellence the Prophet ๏ทบ gave. Not the wealthiest. Not the most influential. The one engaged with the Quran โ€” learning it and passing it on.

The Quran is healing

"And We send down from the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers." โ€” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:82)

The scholars describe this healing as spiritual (healing of the heart from disbelief, doubt, and sin) and potentially physical as well (through ruqyah โ€” reciting specific surahs and verses over the sick). A heart regularly fed with Quran resists the spiritual illnesses that destroy people โ€” pride, envy, attachment to dunya, despair.

The light of the Quran in the heart

The Prophet ๏ทบ described the heart that has no Quran in it as a ruined house. The Quran does not just sit in the memory โ€” it settles in the heart and changes what the person sees, feels, and responds to. People who recite Quran consistently describe a softening that they cannot fully explain โ€” tears come more easily, gratitude comes more naturally, the dunya feels lighter.

A higher rank in Jannah for every verse memorised

"It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and ascend, and recite with tarteel as you used to recite in the world. Your dwelling place will be at the last verse you recite." โ€” (Sunan Abu Dawud 1464)

Every verse memorised is a step higher in Jannah. This is not hypothetical โ€” the Quran you carry in your heart right now is already determining your level in Paradise.

Why Modern Muslims Struggle With Quran Recitation

The honest answer is that Quran recitation asks something screens do not: sustained attention with no instant reward signal. A phone gives you novelty, reaction, dopamine. The Quran gives you something better โ€” but it requires patience before you feel it.

The nafs prefers the immediate hit. Quran requires you to push past the first few minutes of restlessness until the heart settles. This is not a willpower problem โ€” it is a habit problem. The people who recite Quran consistently are not people with extraordinary willpower; they are people who built a routine that removes the decision.

How to Build a Daily Quran Practice

Start with a fixed, small amount

"I will read until I understand it" is not a habit. "I will read one page after Fajr every day" is a habit. Start so small that missing would be embarrassing. One page daily is 365 pages a year โ€” over 10 juz completed. See how to read Quran daily for a structured approach.

Attach it to an existing anchor

The most reliable anchor is salah. After each obligatory prayer โ€” especially Fajr โ€” open the Quran. You are already in a state of wudu, already in a worship frame of mind. The transition to Quran is small.

Read with meaning on some days

Some days, open a translation alongside the Arabic. Let the ayahs speak to your situation. The Quran was not revealed to be recited robotically โ€” it was revealed to transform the person reading it. Both pure recitation (for the letter-by-letter reward) and reflective reading (for the guidance) belong in your practice.

Protect and review what you know

If you have memorised surahs, recite them daily โ€” in salah, in daily life, in Tahajjud. The Prophet ๏ทบ compared the Quran memoriser who does not review it to a lost camel โ€” it slips away. Protecting what you have is as important as adding new memorisation.

Signs of Progress

The Quran is taking root when:

  • Verses come to mind naturally during your day โ€” when stressed, when grateful, when deciding
  • The hardship of starting the session decreases over time
  • Your emotional state after a reading session is consistently different from before it
  • People who know you well notice a change in your character โ€” more patience, more gentleness

Common Questions

Can I recite Quran in a state of minor impurity (without wudu)? Most scholars say yes โ€” wudu is recommended but not obligatory for recitation from memory or from a phone. Touching the physical mushaf requires wudu according to the majority view. See can you read Quran without wudu for details.

Can I recite Quran during my period? See can you recite Quran on your period โ€” scholars differ, but many contemporary scholars permit it for women who have a regular habit of Quran and for the purpose of continuation.

Is there a specific way to recite (tajweed required)? Tajweed โ€” proper recitation rules โ€” is recommended and learning it earns additional reward. But reciting without perfected tajweed is valid and still earns the letter-by-letter rewards the Prophet ๏ทบ described. A struggling reciter gets double reward.

What is the best surah to start building a habit with? Surah Al-Mulk at night (see when to read Surah Mulk), Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays (see when to read Surah Kahf), and the three Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) are excellent starting points with documented specific rewards.

Closing โ€” The Quran Is Waiting to Become Your Companion

Most Muslims have the Quran on their shelves, on their phones, at their fingertips. What they do not yet have is a relationship with it โ€” a daily encounter where its words settle into the heart.

That relationship is built in small, consistent acts. One page. One juz. After Fajr, before sleep, in the car. The Quran does not ask for dramatic transformation โ€” it asks for companionship. Give it that, and it will change you in ways nothing else can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rewards do you get for reciting one letter of the Quran?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Whoever recites a letter of the Book of Allah will have one good deed for it, and one good deed is multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif Lam Meem is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter.' (Al-Tirmidhi 2910). So each single letter gives ten rewards, and short surahs like Al-Ikhlas have dozens of letters โ€” adding up very quickly.

What is the virtue of reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said that Surah Al-Ikhlas equals one third of the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013). Reciting it three times is equivalent to completing the full Quran in terms of reward. It can be read in under thirty seconds. After each obligatory prayer and before sleeping are particularly recommended times.

Does reciting Quran without understanding still have reward?

Yes โ€” the reward for reciting each letter exists regardless of comprehension. The Prophet ๏ทบ said the one who recites the Quran with difficulty still gets a double reward. That said, seeking to understand the Quran through translation and tafsir is separately encouraged and transforms the recitation from a verbal act into a transformative encounter with divine guidance.

What is the best time to recite Quran?

Fajr time is particularly highlighted โ€” the Quran of Fajr is witnessed by angels (Surah Al-Isra, 17:78). The last third of the night (tahajjud time) is also significant. Many scholars recommend reciting after each obligatory prayer, before sleeping, and dedicating a fixed daily block to Quran. Consistency matters more than finding the 'perfect' time.

Will the Quran intercede for me on the Day of Judgment?

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for its companions.' (Sahih Muslim 804). He also said: 'The Quran will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, along with the people of this world who used to act according to it, preceded by Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-Imran, like two clouds or canopies of light.' The companionship with the Quran in this life builds toward its intercession in the next.
