In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is no moment quite like labour. The fear, the physical intensity, the vulnerability โ and alongside all of it, a profound awareness that something beyond human control is happening.
Muslim mothers and families have turned to the Quran in this moment for centuries. Not as a replacement for medical care, but as the spiritual anchor that carries you through what no amount of preparation can fully prepare you for.
Here are the specific surahs and duas that the Islamic tradition recommends for pregnancy, labour, and safe delivery.
Why Surah Maryam Is the Primary Surah for Childbirth
Surah Maryam (Chapter 19) is the most naturally aligned surah with childbirth โ because it tells the story of a woman giving birth, in pain, alone, under a palm tree.
Maryam (peace be upon her) was told by Allah when the contractions began:
ููููุฒููู ุฅููููููู ุจูุฌูุฐูุนู ุงููููุฎูููุฉู ุชูุณูุงููุทู ุนููููููู ุฑูุทูุจูุง ุฌููููููุง
Wa huzzi ilayki bijidh'in-nakhlati tusaqit 'alayki rutaban janiyya.
"And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you fresh, ripe dates." โ (Quran 19:25)
Allah provided her with specific practical guidance โ dates are high in natural sugars that provide energy during labour โ even while she was in one of the most difficult moments a human being can face. This story is a reassurance that Allah's care is practical, specific, and present even in moments of extreme vulnerability.
Reciting Surah Maryam during pregnancy and especially during labour connects the mother to this narrative of divine care and provision. It is not a magical formula โ it is a reminder of Who is actually in charge of the outcome.
Surah Al-Inshirah โ For Ease in Difficulty
Surah Al-Inshirah (Chapter 94) contains one of the Quran's most comforting promises:
ููุฅูููู ู ูุนู ุงููุนูุณูุฑู ููุณูุฑูุง ุฅูููู ู ูุนู ุงููุนูุณูุฑู ููุณูุฑูุง
Fa'inna ma'al-'usri yusra. Inna ma'al-'usri yusra.
"For indeed, with hardship will be ease. Indeed, with hardship will be ease." โ (Quran 94:5-6)
The repetition is intentional and the scholars noted something important: the word al-'usr (hardship) is defined with the article "al" โ the same specific hardship. But yusra (ease) appears twice without the article โ indicating two different eases for every one hardship. Ease will come. And it will come twice.
For a woman in labour, or a family waiting anxiously โ this promise from Allah is solid ground.
Ayat al-Kursi โ For Protection
Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) is the most powerful single verse in the Quran for protection. Reciting it regularly during pregnancy and during labour creates a spiritual shield around both mother and child.
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
"Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death." โ (Nasa'i, authenticated by Al-Albani)
For the specific need of safe delivery, recite Ayat al-Kursi before and after each salah throughout the third trimester, and as often as possible during labour itself.

The Duas to Make During Labour
Dua of Prophet Yunus โ For Intense Difficulty
This dua was made by Prophet Yunus when he was inside the whale โ in a darkness within a darkness within a darkness. Allah answered it and brought him out. It is recommended for any moment of extreme distress:
ูููุง ุฅููููฐูู ุฅููููุง ุฃููุชู ุณูุจูุญูุงูููู ุฅููููู ูููุชู ู ููู ุงูุธููุงููู ูููู
La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.
"There is no god but You; glory be to You; indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." โ (Quran 21:87)
The Prophet ๏ทบ said about this dua: "No Muslim man calls upon Allah with it in any matter except that Allah responds to him." (Tirmidhi 3505)
Hasbunallahu Wa Ni'mal Wakeel โ For Tawakkul
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel.
"Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best disposer of affairs." โ (Quran 3:173)
Ibrahim recited this when being thrown into the fire. The outcome: Allah made the fire cool and safe. This dua is for the moment when the situation is beyond your control and you release it entirely to Allah.
Dua for Ease
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahlan wa anta taj'alul-hazna sahlan idha shi'ta.
"O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy. And You make what is difficult easy when You will." โ (Ibn Hibban, authenticated)
Building a Pregnancy Quran Practice
The most meaningful way to use these surahs is to build a routine during pregnancy that deepens as the due date approaches โ not to start only during labour when the mind is fully occupied with physical intensity.
During pregnancy (daily):
- Read Surah Maryam in full, or as much as possible, once a week
- Recite Ayat al-Kursi after each salah
- Say the dua of Yunus in the morning and evening adhkar
- Read the dua for safe delivery and dua for pregnancy regularly
During the third trimester (increase):
- Increase recitation of Al-Inshirah and Maryam
- Add regular recitation of Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas for protection
- Begin making dua specifically for the baby โ for health, piety, and ease of birth
During labour:
- Keep repetition simple: Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel, La ilaha illa anta, and Al-Fatiha
- Have someone recite Surah Maryam near the mother if she cannot herself
- Make abundant istighfar โ seeking forgiveness is among the most effective duas for having needs fulfilled
The Role of Family and Husband
Labour is not only the mother's spiritual experience. A husband who recites Quran and makes dua in the delivery room is fulfilling a profound duty. The Prophet ๏ทบ said that the dua of a father for his child is among the duas that are answered (Tirmidhi 3448).
If you are the husband or a family member present:
- Recite Surah Maryam, Ayat al-Kursi, and the protective surahs
- Make continuous dua for the mother and child
- Remain calm โ your spiritual state affects the environment
- Say the adhan in the right ear and iqamah in the left ear after the baby is born
Common Questions
Can Quran recitation replace medical care during childbirth?
No. Islam requires that you take the necessary means (asbab) โ which includes competent medical care. Quran recitation is the spiritual dimension alongside, not instead of, proper healthcare. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "Seek treatment, for Allah has not created a disease without creating a cure." (Abu Dawud 3855)
Is there a specific dua said right after birth?
Yes. After birth, the Prophet's Sunnah is to recite the adhan in the baby's right ear and iqamah in the left ear. This is the first sound a Muslim child hears โ the proclamation of Allah's greatness and the call to prayer. See the dua after childbirth guide for what follows.
Can I recite Quran without wudu during labour?
Reciting Quran from memory (without touching the Mushaf) is permissible without wudu for most scholars. If the mother is in a state where wudu is not possible, she can still recite from memory and make dhikr and dua freely. Holding and reading from a physical Quran requires wudu.
What if the birth involves complications?
Keep calling on Allah โ continuously, repeatedly, from the depth of real need. The dua of someone in desperate need is among the most answered duas. Do not allow a difficult situation to make you feel that dua is pointless; that is the time when it is most powerful.
Closing
A new life entering the world is one of the closest things to a miracle that a human being can witness. Every baby born is a direct creation of Allah, delivered with His permission, at His appointed time.
The Quran you recite during pregnancy and labour is not superstition or custom. It is conversation with the One who is already fully present in that room โ who knit the baby together and who holds the outcome in His hands.
Recite it with that understanding. Talk to Allah the way Maryam talked to Him โ directly, honestly, in your need. And trust that the One who cared for Maryam under the palm tree is the same One watching over you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which surah is best for safe delivery during childbirth?
Surah Maryam is most recommended for pregnant women and during labour โ it tells the story of Maryam giving birth to Isa and contains a dua she made in pain that was answered. Surah Al-Inshirah (Ash-Sharh) is recited for ease during difficulty. Ayat al-Kursi is recommended for protection. All three together form a powerful practice during pregnancy and labour.
What dua should I recite during labour?
The dua of Prophet Yunus is widely recommended during intense difficulty: La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin โ There is no god but You; glory be to You; indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers. (Quran 21:87) Also: Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal wakeel โ Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best disposer of affairs. (Quran 3:173)
Can I recite Quran during labour for protection?
Yes. Reciting Quran โ including Surah Maryam, Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, and the Mu'awwidhat (Al-Falaq and An-Nas) โ is beneficial during labour. If the labouring mother cannot recite herself due to pain, a family member can recite near her. The Quran brings tranquility, and its recitation is never out of place.
Is there a specific time to start reciting surah for safe delivery?
Ideally, begin a Quran recitation routine during pregnancy itself โ not only during labour. Surah Maryam is traditionally read throughout pregnancy. Regular reading during pregnancy cultivates the spiritual atmosphere around the mother and creates a habit that can be deepened during labour.
What should the father do during his wife's labour from an Islamic perspective?
The husband should make dua for his wife, recite Quran near her, say dhikr, and maintain calm and supportive presence. Making dua for ease of delivery is a deeply meaningful act of partnership. He can recite the duas for safe delivery on her behalf, and make salawat frequently.
