بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

There is a month that falls between two of Islam's spiritual highlights — Rajab and Ramadan — and most Muslims treat it like a waiting room. You are just marking time until the big month arrives.
The Prophet ﷺ saw it completely differently.
What Is Shaban and Why Did the Prophet Love It
Shaban (شَعْبَان) is the eighth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, one month before Ramadan. Its name relates to a dispersal or gathering — the Arabs would "scatter" in this month seeking water.
What makes Shaban remarkable is not its name but what the Prophet ﷺ did in it. Aisha reported:
"The Messenger of Allah used to fast until we thought he would never break fast. Then he would not fast until we thought he would never fast. But I never saw him fast in any month more than in Shaban — he would fast all of it, or most of it." — (Sahih Bukhari 1969)
This is striking. The Prophet fasted more in Shaban than in any other month besides Ramadan. Why?
He explained it himself when asked: "It is a month that people are heedless about, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is a month in which deeds are raised up to the Lord of the worlds, and I like my deeds to be raised while I am fasting." — (Sunan An-Nasa'i 2357)
Two lessons here. First: the Prophet deliberately targeted neglected times — because the competition is low and the reward is real. Second: he wanted to be found in a state of worship when his deeds were presented to Allah. Both lessons apply to you right now.
Why Muslims Skip Shaban (And Why Your Nafs Loves That)
The nafs is a master of timing. It will let you feel excited about Ramadan two months out. It will let you make plans. But when Shaban actually arrives — the month where you should be building your runway — it convinces you to wait just a little longer.
"I'll start in Ramadan." "I don't want to burn out before the real month." "Shaban isn't that important."
These thoughts are not random. They are the nafs using delay as its most effective weapon. Delay is not neutral. Every day of Shaban spent in spiritual mediocrity means you begin Ramadan from zero — adjusting your schedule, fighting hunger, trying to build habits while simultaneously fasting for 30 days straight.
The Prophet's approach was the opposite: he arrived at Ramadan already running.
How to Make Shaban Count
Fast as much as you realistically can
You do not have to match the Prophet's near-complete fast of Shaban. But add what you can:
- Monday and Thursday voluntary fasts throughout the month
- The white days: 13th, 14th, 15th of Shaban
- At least one fast in the first half of the month to train yourself
A note on the second half: the Prophet advised against starting new voluntary fasts in the latter half of Shaban if you have no prior habit of fasting that month. But if you have been fasting regularly, continuing is fine. The point is not to begin a completely new intensive routine right before Ramadan demands everything from you.
Complete any missed Ramadan fasts
Aisha reported she would make up missed Ramadan fasts in Shaban. (Sahih Bukhari 1950) If you have qada fasts owed from last Ramadan, Shaban is your final window before the next one begins. Do not carry debt into a new Ramadan.
Increase your Quran recitation
The Prophet ﷺ loved Shaban for its closeness to Ramadan — the month of Quran. Use Shaban to re-establish your Quran habit so you arrive at Ramadan already reading. Even 15 minutes daily of focused recitation in Shaban builds the muscle memory you will need.

Pay special attention to the 15th night
The 15th night of Shaban — Laylatul Baraat — is mentioned in some hadith traditions as a night of divine mercy and forgiveness. Ibn Majah narrates that the Prophet said on this night: "Allah looks down on the night of the 15th of Shaban and forgives all His creation except one who associates partners with Him or one who has enmity in their heart." (Ibn Majah 1390 — authenticated by some scholars as hasan)
Whether one considers this hadith sound or weak, the general practice of making lots of dua, istighfar, and voluntary prayer on any night is always appropriate. See our dedicated article on Laylatul Baraat for a detailed look.
Make the dua for Ramadan
Continue the dua from Rajab: "Allahumma barik lana fi Sha'ban wa ballighna Ramadan" — "O Allah, bless us in Shaban and allow us to reach Ramadan."
Ask Allah specifically to allow you to reach Ramadan in a state of faith, health, and readiness. This is not a passive wish. It is an active orientation of your heart toward what is coming.
The Deeds Are Being Raised
The reason the Prophet gave for his Shaban worship is worth sitting with: deeds are raised to Allah in Shaban. He wanted Allah to see him fasting when his annual record was presented.
This is not about performance. It is about presence. Where do you want Allah to find you when this month's deeds are presented?
The Prophet's answer shaped his entire month. What is your answer?
Signs Shaban Is Working
- Waking for Fajr is starting to feel natural rather than painful
- You complete your Quran reading before checking your phone in the morning
- The thought of 30 days of fasting feels challenging but manageable, not overwhelming
- You have made up any missed fasts before this new Ramadan arrives
- Your evening routine now ends with dhikr or Quran rather than screens
These are not dramatic transformations. They are the signs that your Ramadan runway is ready.
Common Questions
Is Shaban one of the sacred months? No. The four sacred months are Rajab, Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, and Muharram. Shaban is not among them, but its proximity to Ramadan and the Prophet's increased worship make it practically significant. See our full guide on the sacred months in Islam.
What if I have only one or two weeks of Shaban left? Start now. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the best time to fast outside Ramadan and said after Ramadan comes fasting in Muharram — but he also praised consistency wherever you are. Two weeks of Shaban fasting and Quran is infinitely better than zero weeks.
How do I balance Shaban worship with my regular responsibilities? Work with your existing schedule rather than against it. Add the Monday or Thursday fast to your week. Add 15 minutes of Quran after Fajr. Small additions to existing routines succeed far more than grand new schedules that conflict with your life.
What dua should I make entering Shaban? "Allahumma barik lana fi Sha'ban wa ballighna Ramadan" — Ask Allah for blessing in this month and to reach Ramadan. Also increase istighfar daily in Shaban as preparation for the month of forgiveness ahead.
The Runway Is Everything
Champions do not start training the day of the competition. They are already in form when it arrives. The Prophet ﷺ understood this about Ramadan. He did not need to adjust to fasting in week one — he was already fasting for weeks.
Shaban is your runway. Use it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Shaban called the overlooked month?
The Prophet said Shaban is a month that people are heedless about because it falls between the sacred month of Rajab and Ramadan. He used this as a reason to increase his own worship during it.
Did the Prophet fast a lot in Shaban?
Yes. Aisha reported that the Prophet fasted more in Shaban than any month besides Ramadan. He almost completed the whole month of Shaban in fasting.
What is special about the 15th of Shaban (Laylatul Baraat)?
The 15th night of Shaban is known as Laylatul Baraat. Some authentic hadith mention Allah looking at His creation on this night with mercy. Scholars differ on the degree of its significance — see our dedicated article for details.
How many voluntary fasts should I aim for in Shaban?
The Prophet fasted most of Shaban. If that is too much, aim for the Monday and Thursday fasts or the white days (13th, 14th, 15th). Even a few extra fasts prepare your body for Ramadan.
Should I stop fasting voluntary fasts in the second half of Shaban?
The Prophet advised against starting voluntary fasts in the latter half of Shaban if you do not already have the habit. But if you are already fasting regularly through the month, it is fine to continue.
